The invention relates in general to an improved form of dump car of the type which is designed to be dumped laterally in both directions, which is provided with side doors controlled in their opening and closing movement by the tilting of the car body and in which the door on the elevated side of the car body is secured in closed position.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple form of door control mechanism organized so that the door on the elevated side will be locked and the door on the side to be depressed will be unlocked prior to the tilting movement of the car body and thereafter the 9 door on the depressed side will move automatical- 1y to and from its open position as the car body is dumped. and then righted.
Broadly this feature of the invention is attained by providing a locking device for each door interconnected so that when one device is in position locking its associated door the other device is in an inoperative position permitting its associated door to open. The door locking mechanisms are interconnected with the control of the mechanism which effects the dumping of the car body and are so arranged that the movement of the control selectively into position to elevate one side will at the same time lock the door on the side to be elevated while unlocking the door on the side to be depressed.
The invention has for other objects the pro viding of an improved form of door which will constitute a chute to assist in the discharging of the material from the dump car; and the providing of an improved form of center sill construction for transferring theload on the car through the supporting center sill construction.
Various other objects and advantages of the invention will be in part obvious from an inspection of the accompanying drawings and in part will be more fully set forth in the following particular description of one form of device embodying my invention, and the invention also consists in certain new and novel features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of one end half of a dump car constituting a physical embodiment of the invention, it being understood that the other half is a duplication of the showing with the parts in reverse position;
Fig. 2 is a view in end elevation of the right end of the car as shown in Fig. 1; with the door locking device in position to lock the right hand door and to unlock the left hand door;
Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the car, the right hand half of the underframe taken approximately on the line 3A-3A and the left hand showing thereof taken approximately on the line 3B3B of Fig. 1 and showing the car body in its normal righted position and with the door locking device in the same position as in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a similar transverse sectional view showing the car body in its dumped position, the right hand side being taken along the line i4 of Fig. 1 and the left hand side corresponding to the showing of the left hand side of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the valvular control for the dumping mechanism shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and with the segmental gear separated.
In the drawings there is shown an underframe l8 positioned on which is a car body H hinged to opposite sides of which are downfolding doors l2 and E3. The car body includes upstanding car ends one of which is shown at i l (Fig. 2). The car body il is designed to be dumped by pneumatically actuated mechanism the one for dumping to the left indicated at l5 in Fig. 4 including telescoping cylinders i6 and I1 and a piston l8 pivoted to the adjacent side of the car body through a yoke member l9, it being understood that similar pneumatically actuated dumping mechanisms are disposed on the left hand side of the car to dump the car body to the right and which left to right dumping mechanism is shown at 20', Fig. 1, all as is more particularly disclosed in Cartzdafner Patent No. 1,798,304 of March 31, 1931.
The underframe center sill includes a pair of transversely spaced apart fabricated channel members 29 and 2| connected at the top by means of a center sill top plate 22. A plurality of cross members project laterally from opposite sides of the underframe; four such members 23 of relatively short form are arranged in pairs adjacent opposite ends of the car and are provided adjacent their outer upper ends with upstanding brackets 24 in each of which is supported a longitudinally extending pin 25. The pins on each side constitute a line of fulcrums adapted to be engaged on each side by inverted U- shaped yokes 26 formed at the lower ends of ribbed castings 21 depending from the underside of the car body I! and otherwise corresponding to the pivotal construction about which the car body turns in dumping as is more fully described in my copending application Serial No. 174,689 filed March 11, 1927.
Also extending outwardly from opposite sides of the center sill construction adjacent opposite ends thereof and nearer the ends than the cross members 23 are relatively long cross members 28 which form rigid extensions from the center sill. These members include parallel upstanding parts 29 and 30, Fig. 1 which provide supports for a pin 3| on which is mounted a roller 32 fitted between the parts 29 and 3B and disposed to engage or be engaged by depending extensions 33 from the doors |2 and i3 to assist in securing the doors in their closed positions and to control the same when moving to and from their normal closed position. The door controlling struts 28 are outlined by a flange 34 to reenforce the same and with an annular base 35 to reenforce the part in which the pin 3| is mounted. The inner portion of the struts 28 fit within the channels of the members 20 and 2| and thus tends to strengthen the center sill. A bottom cover plate 36 underlaps the center sill members 20 and 2| and provides a saddle for the inner ends of the cross members 23.
The car body includes a car body underframe 3'! on which is mounted a bottom structure 38 opposite longitudinal edges of which are defined by Z bars 39 and 43 constituting side sills. A top floor plate 42 covers the wood structure 4| and has its opposite lateral edges downwardly curved as shown at 43 and M to assist in maintaining closed the joint between the car flooring 42 and the inner side of the doors when closed as shown in Fig. 3 and during the initial period of their opening movement.
The body center sill 31 includes a pair of transversely spaced apart channel members 45 and 46 connected by means of a bottom cover plate 41, adapted to rest on top of the underframe center sill when the car body is in its normal righted position as shown in Fig. 3. A bottom floor plate 48 underlies the wooden filler construction M and has its edges in overlapping relation with the lower flanges of the side sills 39 and 45 and overlaps the channel members 45 and 45 forming the center sill. It is a feature of this disclosure that the car bod; center sill channel members 45 and 46 are vertically disposed above their corresponding underframe channel members 20 and 2| so that the strain due to the weight of the car body and to the lading carried thereby, will be transmitted vertically downward from the car body floor structure to the underframe lfl through these vertically aligned rugged structural parts.
The side doors l2 and I3 are of similar construction, wider at the bottom than at the top and include a bottom channel member 49 disposed, when the car body is in its normal righted position, to extend in a substantially horizontal plane as indicated in Fig. 3 and a relatively narrow top channel member 50 which extends outwardly and inclined slightly downwardly from the car. A vertically extending outer plate 5| connects the outer flanges of the lower and upper channel members and extends substantially at right angles to the plane of the web portion of the channel member 49. An inner door facing plate 52 similarly connects the inner flanges of the channels 49 and 5G and extends in a slight curve upwardly and outwardly from the lower towards the upper channel. When in the dumped position the open door is disposed below the plane which contains the floor of the dumped car and has its outer edge spaced a greater distance below this plane than the inner edge of the door. This construction provides a downwardly sloping chute or platform 52' for assisting the movement of the lading from the car body to the ground when the car body is dumped into the tilted position shown in Fig. 4.
The doors are braced at spaced apart points along their lengths by means of pressings 54 fitted between the plates 5| and 52. The space between the side plates at opposite ends of the doors are closed by downwardly and inwardly inclined flanged plates 53 leaving a triangular end portion 54 of each of the side plates of the door. The doors are hingedly connected adjacent their lower edges to the side sills 39 and 40 by means of hinges each including a door casting 55 having its upper portion secured within the channel 49 and pivotally connected by means of a pin 56 to a body casting 51 fitted to the outer side of the side sill and beneath the overlapping portions 43 or 44 of the car flooring plate 42. The doors are provided adjacent their opposite ends with the depending extensions 33 in the form of slightly curved rugged bars, the inner sides of which are provided with cam faces 58, terminating in a rounded locking face 59 designed to engage the roller 32 carried by the fixed strut 28 or to be engaged thereby to control the opening movement of the door as the car body is dumped from its righted position shown in Fig. 3 into its dumped position shown in Fig. 4 and for restoring the door into its closed position automatically with the righting of the car.
The end portions of the doors are provided adjacent their upper edges with latch receiving apertures 60 and 5| adapted to receive respectively latches 52 and 63 in the form of hell crank levers pivoted on pins 64 carried by the car end it and projecting from the inner face thereof. The latches are arranged so that a depending nose 65 forming the outer end can assume two positions, one, an elevated position shown at the left of Fig. 2, which permits the door |2 to open freely and the other a depressed position shown to the right of Fig. 2, arranged to secure the door l3 in its locked closed position. An inwardly and downwardly extending relatively long link 66 is pivoted to the bell crank lever forming latch 52 and a similar but shorter link 51 is pivoted to the bell crank lever forming the latch 63. The inner, lower end of the links 65 and 61 are both pivoted to an upstanding arm 68 secured to a longitudinal shaft 69 which extends lengthwise of the car body and is located outwardly offset from the center sill. A rocking hand lever 70 is secured to the end of the shaft 69 which projects through the car end I4 and is disposed to be rocked from the full line into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2.
It is understood from this construction that with the lever in the full line position shown in Fig. 2 the left hand door I2 is unlocked and thus free to swing open while the right hand door I3 is in locked position and secured from opening movement. Swinging the lever towards the dotted line position will reverse this locked and unlocked condition of the doors, locking the left hand door l2 while unlocking the right hand door l3. Means are provided for locking the lever 10 in either position and for the purpose of accommodating a padlock or similar fastening means the lever is provided with an aperture adapted to receive the hasp of a padlock.
The pneumatically actuated mechanisms l5 and 28 for dumping the car body are controlled by a valvular mechanism disposed between a source of pneumatic pressure, such as air reservoir tank 12 and the respective cylinders l6 and i1 forming part of the dumping mechanism 15 as is conventional in dump cars of this character. For the purpose of illustrating the feature of the invention herein claimed it will be assumed that the actuating air pressure is conveyed from tank 12 through piping 13 containing the usual manually actuated control valve (not shown) to the two directional valvular controls 14 and 15. Through suitable piping not fully shown control 14 is connected for controlling the dumping mechanism l5 and the valvular control 15 is connected for controlling the dumping mechanism 20 These valvular controls are actuated selectively to actuate the dumping mechanisms by means of a segmental gear 16, the teeth of which face upwardly, and which gear is fixed to a stub shaft H carried by the underframe In. Disposed in superposed relation with segmental gear 16 and normally in meshing engagement therewith is a similar form of segmental gear 18 secured to the shaft 69 and rocked as this shaft is rocked by the hand lever 10. The valvular control mechanisms are so organized when connected with the gear train formed by the segmental gears 16 and 18 that when in the position illustrated in Fig. 3, the parts of the valvular control are disposed to admit pressure through the control 14 to admit air pressure from the source into the cylinder l6 and thus actuate the dumping mechanism l5. Similarly with the movement of the control lever from the full line into the dotted line position shown in Fig. 2, the rotation of the shaft 69 in its action to reverse the locked condition of the doors will simultaneously rock the segmental gears from right to left of the position shown in Fig. 3, into position to close the valve at 14 and open the valve at 15 and thus admit air pressure in the cylinder of the dumping mechanism 20' to elevate the left hand side of the car into a dumping position to the side opposite from that shown in Fig. 4.
In operation and assuming the car to be in the normal righted position shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, it is understood that the car body will be supported on the center sill portion of the underframe and that the yokes 26 will normally be spaced slightly above their associated fulcrum pins 25 on opposite sides of the car. Under this normal condition the members 28 will constitute rigid struts positioned between the underframe center sill and both of the side doors to hold the doors closed in engagement with opposite edges of the car ends in the position illustrated in Fig. 3. The curved faces 59 are designed to fit snugly against the outer faces of the rollers 32.
With the control lever disposed in one of its two operative positions, say in the full line position shown in Fig. 2, and with the left hand door unlocked and the right hand door looked as previously indicated, the lifting mechanism shown in Fig. 4 will elevate the right hand side of the car body to cause the same to turn about the fulcrums indicated at 19 on the left hand side corresponding to the fulcrums shown at 25 on the right hand side of Fig. 3. As the car body is dumped the extension 33 of the doors on the dumping side will move about and under the outer rounded end or roller at the outer end of the strut member 28 at a rate of movement depending upon the character of the cam face 58 and the opening movement of the door will continue until the door is in its open, fioor extended position shown in Fig. 4. In order to restore the dump body to its righted position air is released from the elevating mechanism conventionally.
Means are provided such as the wooden member 4| to engage the inner end of the door extension 33 to limit the outward movement of the door as shown in Fig. 4.
During this dumping movement, it will be not-ed that the upper door such as the door 13 in Fig. 4 is maintained locked by its fastening device 63 and there is avoided any possibility of this elevated door becoming opened accidentally. Releasing the air pressure in the cylinders l6 and I! will permit the car body to drop back into its normal righted position shown in Fig. 3 as is usual with such forms of dump cars. During this righting movement the inner extension 33 from the door will be engaged by the outer end of the strut member 28 and reacting on the door extension this strut member will act to move the door back into its closed position as shown in Fig. 3.
Shifting the hand lever to the dotted line position in Fig. 2 will automatically cause the simul- H taneous unlocking of the right hand door, the locking of the left hand door and the energizing of the left hand dumping mechanism 20 to tilt the car body to the right with the subsequential gradual opening and succeeding closing movement of the right hand door as the body is restored to its normal running position as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
I claim:
1. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement and provided with an upstanding car end and with side doors, a shaft extending longitudinally of the car and extending through the car end, a hand lever secured to the shaft exteriorly of the car end for rocking the shaft, a latch for each door pivoted to the car end, an arm secured to the shaft, a pair of links having their inner ends pivoted to said arm and their outer ends pivoted to the latches and said links disposed when the hand lever is shifted into one position to cause one of the latches to be moved into position locking its associated door and the other latch to be moved into an inoperative position permitting its associated door to be moved into open position and when the hand lever is shifted into another position to move the first named latch into an inoperative position and to move the second named latch into an operative position locking its associated door.
2. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement and provided with an upstanding car end and with side doors, a shaft extending longitudinally of the car and extending through the car end, a hand lever secured to the shaft exteriorly of the car end for rocking the shaft, a latch for each door pivoted to the car end, an arm secured to the shaft, a pair of links having their inner ends pivoted to said arm and their outer ends pivoted to the latches and said links disposed when the hand lever is shifted into one position to cause one of the latches to be moved into position locking its associated door and the other latch to be moved into an inoperative position permitting its associated door to be moved into open position and when the hand lever is shifted into another position to move the first named latch into an inoperative position and to move the second named latch into an operative position locking its associated door, pneumatic means carried by the underframe for tilting the car body, a valvular control for said pneumatic means, and mechanism between the shaft and valvular control for causing the pneumatic means to function.
3. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement and provided with an upstanding car end and with side doors, a shaft extending longitudinally of the car and extending through the car end, a hand lever secured to the shaft exteriorly of the car end for rocking the shaft, a latch for each door pivoted to the car end, an arm secured to the shaft, a pair of links having their inner ends pivoted to said arm and their outer ends pivoted to the latches and said links disposed when the hand lever is shifted into one position to cause one of the latches to be moved into position locking its associated door and the other latch to be moved into an inoperative position permitting its associated door to be moved into open position and when the hand lever is shifted into another position to move the first named latch into an inoperative position and to move the second named latch into an operative position locking its associated door, pneumatic means for tilting the car body, control mechanism for said pneumatic means, said mechanism being laterally offset from the axis of turn between the underframe and car body and including two separable parts, one carried by the underframe and one by the car body whereby as the car body is tilted about its axis of turn the connection between the hand lever and the control for the pneumatic tilting means is automatically intercepted.
4. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe including a central portion and outbearing supports laterally ofiset from opposite sides of the central portion, a tiltable car body normally resting on the central portion and provided on each side with a bearing member positioned above and normally spaced from the adjacent outbearing support, the bearing member and support on whichever may be the depressed side of the tilted car body coacting to constitute a fulcrum about which the car body turns in dumping, a meshed gear drive positioned between the central portion and one of the fulcrums, one element of said drive carried by the underframe and the other by the car body and movable therewith away from the other element as the car body is tilted, pneumatically actuated mechanism for tilting the car body, a valvular control therefor actuated by the rotation of the gear drive element carried by the underframe and a manually actuated control carried by the car body and operatively connected to the gear drive element carried by the car body.
5. In a dump car the combination of an underframe and a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement in both directions and provided with downfolding side doors, each door provided with locking means for securing the same in closed position, a linkage connection interconnecting the two locking means for causing one locking means to be in an inoperative unlocking position while the other locking means is in its operative locking position, pneumatically actuated mechanism for tilting and righting the car body, valvularv control means for said mechanism and manually actuated means interconnected with the valvular control means and with the locking means and their linkage connection for selectively locking the door which will be on the elevated side, for unlocking the door which will be on the depressed side and for causing the pneumatically actuated mechanism to function to tilt the car body towards the side provided with the unlocked door.
6. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe and a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement in both directions and provided with downfolding side doors, each door provided with locking means for securing the same in closed position, a linkage connection interconnecting the two locking means for causing one locking means to be in an inoperative unlocking position while the other locking means is in its operative locking position, pneumatically actuated mechanism for tilting and righting the car body, valvular control means for said mechanism and manually actuated means interconnected with the valvular'control means and with the locking means and their linkage connection for selectively locking the door which will be on the elevated side, for unlocking the door which will be on the depressed side and for causing the pneumatically actuated mechanism to function to tilt the car body towards the side provided with the unlocked door, and means independent of said locking means and operable between the underframe and doors for maintaining the doors in closed position when the car body is in its normal righted position.
7. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe and a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement towards both sides and provided with downfolding side doors, each of said doors provided with controlling extensions, means fixed to the underframe and engaged by said extensions for securing the doors in closed position when the car body is in its normal righted position and for automatically controlling the opening and closing movement of the door on the depressed side of the car body when tilted from its normal position, locking means for each door carried by the car body, mechanism for tilting the car body selectively towards both sides, and preselected means operably connected to the looking means and to said mechanism and operable prior to the actuation of said mechanism for tilting of the car body and for securing in closed position that door which will be on the elevated side of the car body when tilted.
8. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for dumping movement and provided with side doors connected thereto to turn downwardly and outwardly from their closed position, a pair of looking devices, one for each door, a linkage interconnecting the locking devices to cause either device to be in an inoperative position while the other is in its operative position securing its associated door in closed position, and a manually actuated control including a rocking shaft carried by the car body and an arm secured to the shaft and connected to the linkage for reversing the operative and inoperative conditions oi. the locking devices.
9. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral tilting movement in both directions, pneumatically actuated mechanism carried by the underframe for tilting the car body, valvular controls for selectively causing the tilting mechanism to function to tilt the car body towards either side, a segmental gear carried by the underframe, operatively connected to control said valvular con- Lil trols and having its teeth facing upwardly, said car body provided with side doors, each door provided with a locking device, a segmental gear carried by the car body with its teeth facing downwardly and adapted to mesh with the teeth on the segmental gear carried by the underframe to operate the same, a linkage for connecting the locking devices to cause the locking device for a door on one side of the car to become inoperative and thus permit the associated door to open as the locking device for the door on the other side becomes operative, said linkage being connected to the segmental gear carried by the car body and a manually actuated lever operating the gear train formed of the two segmental gears.
10. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement in both directions and otherwise free of any connections between the underframe and car body, said car body provided with side doors connected thereto to drop downwardly and outwardly from their closed position, said doors bearing on the underframe, controlled thereby and otherwise disconnected from the underframe, door locking mechanism carried entirely on the car body and including a locking device for each door pivotally mounted on the car body and operably independent of the underframe, a pivotally connected linkage connection between, the locking devices for the doors on opposite sides for causing the locking device on one side to be moved into an inoperative po sition as the locking device on the other side is moved into an operative position and a manually actuated control including a hand lever pivoted to the car body and operatively connected to said linkage connection to actuate the same.
11. In a dump car, a car body provided at opposite sides with drop doors, a pair of locking devices, one for each door pivotally mounted adjacent the door locked thereby, a shaft journalled on the car body and provided with a radially extending arm, a pair of links having one end of each pivoted to said arm and the other end of each link pivoted to the locking devices and said arms being arranged to cause one of the pair of locking devices to be in an inoperative unlocked position while the other device is in its operative door locking position, and control means for rotating said shaft, a segmental gear secured to said shaft and mechanism adapted to be disposed in intermeshing relation with the gear.
12. In a dump car the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted on the underframe and adapted to tilt to dumping position, mechanism for selectively dumping the car in either direction, side doors hinged to the car body, and each door provided with a latch for securing the same in closed position and a manual control carried by the car body and operatively connected to said mechanism and to the latches to move one into locking position simultaneously with the moving of the other into unlocking position and to cause the actuation of the mechanism to dump the car body towards the side having the latch in unlocking position.
13. A dump car comprising an underframe, a car body mounted on said underirame and adapted to tilt to dumping position at either side of the car about rocker fulcrums spaced laterally from the longitudinal center of the underframe, side doors hinged to the car body and adapted to swing outward and downward from their closed positions, locking mechanism for each door comprising a member supported on the car body, and
operable only on the side of the car body which is capable at the time of being elevated and otherwise operable independently of the underframe, and pivotally connected with the car body to swing therewith at the rising side of the car body, a member on the underframe at the dumping side thereof having its outer end stationary and camming means effective between the outer end of said member and the adjacent door for controlling said door.
14. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement, said car body provided with side doors connected thereto to move downward and outward from their closed positions, two operably independent locking means each adapted to secure its associated door in closed position, one of said means comprising a pair of door controlling members fixed to the underframe and rigid therewith and adapted to engage the doors when the car body is in its normal righted position to hold the doors locked in their closed positions and the other locking means carried by the car body operably independent of the position of the car body relative to the underframe and disposed to lock whichever may be the door on the elevated side of the car body when dumped, mechanism for tilting the car body towards one side, other mechanism for tilting the car body towards the opposite side, control means for selectively actuating either mechanism, and a manual control for moving said other locking means to and from its position locking said door as an incident of actuating said tilting mechanism control means.
15. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe including a center sill, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement, said car body provided with side doors connected thereto to move downward and outward from the closed positions, each door provided with a controlling extension, a door controlling member projecting laterally and rigidly from opposite sides of the center sill and each coacting with the door extension on the adjacent side to secure the associated door in closed position when the car body is in its normal righted position and automatically to control the opening and closing of the door on the depressed sides of the car When dumped, additional locking means for securing the doors in closed position and manually controlled means including a rocking lever pivotally mounted on the car body, movable therewith and operatively connected to said additional door locking means for selectively locking the door on one side while unlocking the door on the other side.
16. In a dump car the combination of an underframe including a fabricated center sill comprising two transversely spaced apart channel members and a top plate connecting the channel members, a car body mounted on the underframe for lateral dumping movement and including a center sill normally resting on the top cover plate and comprising two transversely spaced apart channel members, the channel members of both center sills extending longitudinally of the car and with each of the car body channel members being in vertically superposed relation respectively with the corresponding underframe channel member whereby strains on the car body center sill are transmitted directly downward to the underframe center sill, cross members projecting laterally and rigidly from opposite sides of the underframe center sill, certain of said cross members constituting door controls and certain others provided with fulcrum pins, inverted U-shaped yokes secured to the body underframe and normally disposed in position overlapping but out of contact with the fulcrum pins.
17. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement and provided with a floor, said car body provided with a side door hinged thereto to move downwardly and out- Wardly from its closed position into a position forming a chute disposed below the plane which contains the floor of the dumped car body, said door including an inner side curving upwardly and outwardly when the door is in its normal upright closed position, and adapted when the car body is dumped and the door moved down wardly into said chute forming position to have its extreme outer curved portion inclined down sharply to the perpendicular to cause the lading as it is about to be discharged from the chute to move almost perpendicularly and to be deposited nearer the tracks on which the car is mounted than would be the case if the outer discharge portion of the chute were fiat.
18. A side door for a dump car comprising a relatively wide bottom channel, a relatively narrow top channel, an outer plate extending substantially at right angles to the web of the wide bottom channel and connecting the outer flanges of the channels, an inner plate connecting the inner flanges of the channels, said inner plate curving slightly from the part secured to the wide channel towards the part secured to the narrow channel, the outer edge of the narrow channel being exposed to form a rugged stop for the open door should it touch the ground or other obstacle, hinges including a door casting having its upper portion secured within the wide channel and thus bracing the lower portion of the door, and a body casting pivotally connected to the door casting.
19. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for dumping movement laterally towards both sides, said car body provided with a floor and with side doors hinged thereto to move downwardly and outwardly from their closed position, said doors each including an inner side curving upwardly and outwardly when the door is in its normal upright closing position and adapted when the car body is dumped to form a downwardly and outwardly curved chute forming a discharge edge portion more sharply inclined to the vertical than the dumped body for causing the lading discharged from the chute to slide on to the ground at a point nearer the tracks on which the car is mounted than would be the case if the chute were fiat at its discharge edge portion.
20. In a dump car, an underframe including a fabricated center sill, cross members projecting laterally from opposite sides of the center sill, contained substantially within the horizontally projected outlines thereof, and coacting therewith to form a structural part of the underframe, rollers carried at the outer ends of said cross members, below the level of the top of the center sill, a car body carried by the underframe, side doors hinged to the car body, and said doors provided with controlling cam members adapted to engage the rollers to secure the doors in closed position and to control the opening and closing movement of the door.
21. In a dump car, the combination or an underframe including a center sill, cross members projecting rigidly from opposite sides of the center sill, fulcrums adjacent the outer ends of certain of the cross members, a car body mounted during normal transport on the center sill and rockable about the fulcrum for lateral dumping movement, said car body provided with side doors and said side doors provided with control members engaging certain others of said cross members when the car body is in its normal righted position to hold the doors closed and controlled thereby as the car body is rocked about the fulcrums.
22. In a dump car the combination of an underframe including a center sill, cross members projecting from opposite sides of the center sill and forming a rigid part of the underframe, oertain of said cross members provided adjacent their outer ends with elements of a pivotal body support, and certain other of said cross members constituting door locking struts rigid with the underframe, a car body mounted on the underframe for lateral dumping movement and provided with side doors hinged thereto for downward and outward opening movement, said doors provided with cam controlling extensions for engaging the rigid struts and coacting therewith to secure the doors in closed position and said door extensions and struts coacting for controlling the opening and closing movement of the doors and means carried by the car body constituting coacting elements of said pivotal body support.
23. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement and provided on opposite sides with side doors, locking devices for the door on each side, means interconnecting the locking devices so that when one device is in position locking its associated door the other device is in an inoperative position permitting its associated door to open, mechanism for effecting the dumping of the car body, a selective control for said mechanism, said control operatively con; nected with said interconnecting door locking means so that with the movement of the control into position to elevate one side of the car body the door on the side to be elevated will be locked automatically while the door on the side to be depressed will be unlocked.
24. In a dump car, the combination of an underirame provided with elements of a fulcrum, a car body mounted on the underframe for lateral dumping movement about said fulcrum elements and normally having a freedom of rocking movement on the underframe, said car body provided with side doors, locking devices for said doors carried by the car body, mechanism carried by the underframe for dumping the car body, a control for said mechanism carried by the underframe and a connection between said locking devices and said control for causing the same to act simultaneously.
25. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement in both directions and provided with a door on each side thereof, locking means for securing both doors in closed position during normal transport, mechanism for dumping the car body selectively towards either side, a door locking latch for each door, a control for said mechanism and means interconnecting said control and said locking latches for selectively locking the door which is to be on the elevated side, unlocking the door which is to be on the depressed side and simultaneously causing the dumping mechanism to tilt the car body towards the side with the unlocked door.
26. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for dumping movement and provided with a door, mechanism operatively connected to simultaneously dump the car body and control the opening movement of the door, means for securing the door in closed position, manually controlled connecting means carried partly on the underframe and partly on the car body for simultaneously controlling said mechanism and said securing means when the car body is in its normal righted position and said connecting means being separable and thus automatically rendered inoperative as the car body is elevated away from the underframe.
27. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement towards both sides, mechanism for selectively tilting the car body towards its dumping positions, a control therefor including valvular mechanism carried by the underframe, said car body provided with side doors, locking means carried by the car body for securing one door in closed position while per mitting the other door to open, connecting means between the locking means and the valvular mechanism for causing them to be operated in unison, said connecting means being spaced from any line about which the car body turns in dumping and including a loose connection which permits the separation of the door locking means from the valvular mechanism when the car body is tilted.
28. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for dumping movement and provided with a door, mechanism for tilting the car body into a dumped position, a locking device for the door, control means for said tilting mechanism, control means for the door locking device, a connection between said two control means, said connection including 7 two separable parts, one carried by the underframe and the other by the car body, said parts being operably connected automatically when the car body is restored to its normal righted position and separated automatically when the car body is tilted from such position.
29. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for tilting into a dumped position laterally towards either side, dumping mechanism for selectively moving the car body into either of said dumped positions, control mechanism therefor carried by the underframe, a manually actuated hand lever carried by the car body and movable therewith and a connection between said lever carried by the car body and the control mechanism carried by the underframe, said connection being operable when the car body is in its normal righted position to control said control mechanism by the manual manipulation of said hand lever, said connection including parts separable automatically incidental to the movement of the car body away from said normal righted position whereby the manually set position of the control mechanism is maintained while the car body is in tilted position.
30. In a dump car, the combination of an underframe adapted to be supported from the track rails, a car body mounted on the underframe and tiltable in both lateral directions and about axes at opposite sides of the underframe, said car body provided at opposite sides with downfolding doors pivoted to the car body adjacent the axis about which the car body turns in dumping and disposed when the car body is tilted to form a downwardly and inwardly curved chute on the depressed side for discharging the material from the tilted car body, the lower discharge edge of the door whenso disposed in its chute forming position being closer to the adjacent rail and closer to the adjacent axis of turn of the car body measured along a horizontal line than a plane containing the axes of the doors on opposite sides of the car body and intersecting said horizontal line whereby the leverage of the load acting on the outer end of the chute forming door in any tendency to tip the car off the track rails is less than would be the case if the open door was fiat and disposed in such plane.
31. In a dump car, the combination of a car body mounted for tilting movement in both lateral directions, a pair of downfolding side doors on opposite sides of the car body and hinged thereto for opening and closing movement about the axes of turn at opposite sides of the car body, said axes of turn defining a plane of reference, said car body provided with a floor extending above and parallel to said plane of reference and having opposite edges down turned towards said plane of reference and disposed to discharge the lading on to the door on the depressed side of the car body when tilted, each of said doors when in open position having its load discharging inner face disposed with its inner edge adjacent its axis of turn and substantially tangent to said plane and said face progressively extending in a convex curve from said plane downwardly and slightly inwardly of the car towards a position beneath its axis of turn.
32. In a dump car, the combination of a car body, a downfolding side door hinged to the dump body and adapted to constitute a chute for discharging the lading from the dump body on the depressed side of the car body when tilted, the lower edge portion of the door when in its lowered position being more sharply inclined to the vertical than the upper edge portion and the lower edge being located horizontally nearer a vertical through its axis of turn than a plane of reference defined as extending through said axis and having an inclination from the horizontal equal to the angle through which the car body turned in dumping.
33. In adump car, the combination of an underframe, a car body mounted thereon for lateral dumping movement, a downfolding door hinged tothe car body and adapted when the car body is tilted to form a chute for discharging the lading from the car body, the upper side of the door when in said chute forming position curving downwardly and slightly inwardly towards the underframe.
34. In a dump vehicle, an underframe, a dump body tiltable for dumping to either side about widely spaced fulcrums, downfolding side doors pivoted to said dump body, each door having a depending member provided on its inner face with a curved cam forming contour, means rigid with the underframe cooperating with the cam forming face of the depending members for controlling the opening of the door at the dumping side and for positively closing the door when the body is returned to righted position and for holding the doors closed during normal transport and locking means carried by the dump body and engaging each door above its pivotal connection With the dump body for securing in closed position the door on the upper side of the tilted dump body.
35. In a dump vehicle, an underframe, a dump body tiltable for dumping at either side about fulcrums at opposite sides of said underframe, means for selectively tilting the dump body, said fulcrums being spaced apart so that said dump body is held against accidental dumping during transport, a down folding door at each side of said body, each freely movable from its open towards its closed position on the depressed side of the car body independently of the movement of the car body, devices associated with each door for independently, automatically and selectively controlling the opening and closing of the door when said dump body is tilted toward and from dumping position, said devices being located wholly at the same side of the medial plane through said body as the door with which they are associated, and manually controlled means interconnected with said selective tilting means independent of said devices for preselectively locking the door which is to be on the elevated side while unlocking the door which is to be on the depressed side when the dump vehicle is subsequently tilted.
36. In a dump vehicle, a frame, a dump body tiltable for dumping to either side about fulcrums at opposite sides of the frame, side doors for said dump body pivoted thereto adjacent the lower edges of the doors, fingers on said doors depending below the door pivots, means on the frame to engage said fingers and constituting the sole means to hold both of the doors closed during normal transport, and means on said dump body engaging the doors above the door pivots to hold the respective doors closed on the elevated side during tilting towards the opposite side and said door holding means on the elevated side being functionally operative only when the finger on the elevating side leaves its associated means on the frame and when the door holding means on the depressing side is in an inoperative unlocking position.
37. In a dump vehicle, a frame, a. dump body supported on the frame and tiltable for dumping to either side about fulcrums at opposite sides of the frame, side doors for said dump body pivoted thereto, fingers on said doors depending below the door pivots, means on the frame to engage said fingers and thus to hold the doors closed during normal transport, and control means adapted to be set to tilt the car body in one direction, said means including auxiliary means on said body to lock the door which is on the side which is to become the elevated side While unlocking the other door during normal transport, said auxiliary means being operatively independent of dump body movement and said finger engaging means serving during tilting to limit the opening movement of the door on the depressed side of the body.
88. In a dump vehicle, a frame, a dump body centrally supported from the dump body and tiltable for dumping at either side about fulcrums at opposite sides of said frame, said fulcrums being spaced apart and located relative to the dump body so that said dump body is restrained from accidental dumping during transport while permitted a slight rocking movement, a down-folding door at each side of said body, independent devices for each door for automatically, independently and selectively controlling the opening and closing of the door through which dumping is to be effected, said devices for controlling the door being constructed so as to permit said door to move toward closed position while the body is continuing its tilting movement toward dumping position, and devices for holding the door closed at the elevated side during dumping, said devices being interconnected with the means for controlling the open ing and closing of the door so as to lock Whichever may happen to be the door on the elevated side and at all times spaced from and independent of the frame.
39. In a dump vehicle, a frame, a dump body supported centrally on the frame, tiltable for dumping at either side about fulcrums at opposite sides of said frame, said fulcrums being spaced apart to restrain said dump body from accidental dumping during transport, a downfolding door at each side of said body, devices associated with each door for independently, automatically and selectively controlling the opening and closing of the door when said body is tilted toward and from dumping position, said devices being located wholly at the same side of the medial plane through said body as the door with which they are associated, and manually operated devices operable only when the dump body is in its normal righted position to selectively move into position to lock one door and to unlock the other and operable in all positions of the dump body relative to the frame for holding the door on the elevated side closed when said body is elevated for dumping at the other sldel ROY E.
