A characteristic of the present invention is the provision of one or more extension leaves associated with a primary centrally disposed table leaf movable vertically and actuated and controlled in such movements by cam members operatively connected to the extension leaves. If more than one extension leaf is employed, there will be a plurality of cam members, one or more for each leaf.
A specific object of the invention is to provide a table of the said type having a simple and inexpensive construction, and which will be positive in its action, the cam member or members being simple in form and capable of stamping by a single stamping operation from sheet metal.
'Ihe invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:-
Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing certain elements in dotted lines, embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section on the line 2-2, Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the supporting and control bars for an extension leaf.
Figure 4 is an enlarged perspective view of the central section of one of the supporting and control bars carrying one of the operating cams for the central leaf of the table.
Figure 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5, Figure 4.
Figure 6 is a transverse section of the table with two extension leaves in closed position, the section being taken generally in the same plane as line 8 8, Figure 1, looking in'the direction of the arrows.
Figure 7 is a transverse section of the table, similar to Figure 6, showing one of the extension leaves moved outwardly somewhat short of its nal outward position.
Figure 8 is a view similar yto Figure 7, showing both leaves after they have been moved outwardly to extended position and then inwardly to nal extended position.
Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 8 showing one of the leaves moved back to closed position and the right-hand leaf moved outwardly to extreme position preparatory to its return under the central leaf, and to closed position.
Figure 10 is a view similar to Figure 9, showing the right-hand extension leaf moved from the position of Figure 9 part way under the centra] leaf, the action of the cam being illustrated.
Figure 11 is a perspective view of the fixed guiding support carried by the major bar for the central leaf and having a guiding and supporting action upon the extension leaf bars.
Figure 12 is a View in bottom perspective of a corner. fragment of one of the extension leaves ik showing the position of one of its supporting and control bars thereon.
'Ihe invention is adapted for a table constructed with a central leaf and one or more extensionleaves, each having a rectangular frame as of Wood, covered with metal. However, the leaves may be primarily of Wood omitting the metal covering, if desired.
The table may comprise a'usual major frame comprising longitudinal frame members such as the frame member I illustrated in Figure 2which may be directly attached each to two of the legs 2,' each set comprising a longitudinal frame member and two legs 2, being connected by transverse frame members 3. '20
Supported on transverse frame members 3 centrally thereof, is a primary supporting bar 4 for the primary leaf of the table, this leaf comprising the longitudinal frame pieces 5, transverse frame pieces 6 and longitudinal centrally disposed frame piece 5:12. The frame pieces 5, 5x and 6 are covered by metal sheathing 1.
'Ihe primary leaf is vertically movable. To guide the leaf in its movements central frame piece 5a: carries the depending guide studs 8 which are vertically movable in bushing sleeves 9 carried by primary supporting bar 4, as shown more particularly in Figure 2.
Each extension leaf may comprise the longitudinal frame pieces III and transverse frame pieces II covered by a metal sheathing I2. Each extension leaf has connected at its underface and to an appropriate longitudinal frame member I0, two or more supporting and control bars I3.
Each bar I3 is longitudinally grooved at its opposite side faces, the grooves being indicated at l3nt, Figure 3, and into each groove is projected one arm I4a: carried by a fixed guiding support I4, shown in Figure 11. There is in the present embodiment one xed guiding support I4 for each extension leaf bar I3, each support I4 being secured to the underface of primary supporting bar 4 as shown more particularly in Figures 1 and 6 to 10 inclusive. Grooves |311: are of greater Width than the thickness of the arms I4a: of fixed guiding support I4 to enable a necessary transverse movement of bars I3 in the operation of the extension leaves as will later be explained.
In my construction the center leaf 'I is positively raised in the outward movement of either extension leaf by reason of the fact that the control bars I3 are mounted for movement angularly of the center leaf 'l and therefore in the outward 5 movement of an extension leaf its upper surface will bear upon the underlying frame of the center leaf and will cause it to raise in the manner shown in Figure '7.
When the extension leaf has been moved to a positionwclearing` they center leaf, thetlatter will drop by-'gr,avity, .and'zthereupon the. extension leaf may be moved inwardly to Figure 8.
The function of the operating cams l5 is to; hold the center leaf upwardly during the beginl5 ning of a closing movement of the VJappropriate* leaf. To this end, in closing the table, theeape propriete extension leaf is moved outwardly from I5 to be carried over upon the appropriate frame members l and infbeari-ng'relation.witl'n'thefoverek lying framemember; 5'201?.I the: centenfleaf; the parts assumingv the* .position shown z in vFigure' 9' whereinnthe depending Ifiingers of vthe appropriate cams-.ilaengage the innerfaoe of.;the.-; adjacent framelmemberl preventing further.' outward movement of the extensi'oru'leaf.
