Y., a corpo-- ration of New York Application october 15, 1936, serial No. 105,657 5 Claims. (ol. V.2-247) This invention relates to an improved shirt pocket, and has for an object to provide a pocket which may be applied to and form part of a workmans shirt, or in fact any kind of a shirt,
5 the structure being such as to use part of,Y the shirt body as one wall of a certain portion of the pocket.
Another object of the invention is to provide'- a shirt pocket wherein inner and outer pocket lo chambers are presented and arranged to have independent entrances.
An additional object of the invention is to 'provide an improved pocket formed of a plurality of sheets of material connected together in 15 such a. manner as to present a restricted or smaller outer pocket and an extended or enlarged inner pocket, the respective pockets being provided with turned-over edges and reinforcing means to prevent tearing or unusual distortion.
In the accompanying drawings:
kFig. 1 is a perspective view of a shirt and pocket disclosing an embodiment of the invention, the same being illustrated on a figure;

45 Fig. 9 is a view similar to Fig. 8 but with the reduced extension folded over and secured in place by a buttonhole;
Fig. 10 is a view similar to Fig. 9 but with the inner wall shown in Fig. 7 arranged therebe- 50 neath; 1
Fig. 11 is a, front view showing the next ste in forming the pocket from that illustrated in Fig. 10;
Fig. 12 is a rear elevation of the structure 55 shown in Fig. 11.
,Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, l indicates the shirt body and 2 broadly the pocket. As illustrated particularly in Fig. 3,.the shirt body forms the inner wall 3k of the inner pocket chamber4,while the innerpocket Wall 5 5 forms the outer wall ofv chamber 4 and the inner wall of theouter pocket chamber 6. Arranged exteriorly of the wall 5 is an outer wall 1. It will be noted that the outer wall 1 does` not extend to the upper end of the inner wall 5 and conse- 10 quently the entrance opening 8 of the inner pocket chamber is appreciably below the entrance opening 9 of the outer pocket chamber. In order that the particular construction resulting in the formation of the inner and outer pockety chambers f may be understood, reference is had particularly to Figs. '1 to 12 inclusive. The inner wall 5 isa rectangular sheetkof fabric as shown in Fig. 7 with the corners l and Il cut off so as to secure a desired shape.` On the top of this inner wall*V is arranged the outer wall 1, but before the outer wall 1 -is placed in position the rectangular extension I2 is turned over as shown in Fig. 9 and then the buttonhole I3 is formed.
It will be observed that notches I9 and l5 are provided, said notches being adjacent and parallel to the side edges of therectangular extension |12. This results in providing extending tabs i6 and I1 projecting from the upper end of the cover section I8. After the parts have been formed n as shown in Fig. 9, the outer wall is placed on 00 top of the inner wall 5 so that the parts will ap.- pear as shown in Fig. 10. Seams I9 and 20 are then supplied,A said seams extending fromk top to bottom of the rectangular extension l2 so as r to secure the lateral side edges to the inner wall '0 5 intermediate the side edges of the inner wall.
It will be noted from Fig. that the seams i9 and ldo` not close the ,bottom of the inner pocket. However, yit will lbe notedf'that when the rectangular extension l2 is folded over along 40 the line 2| a rounded edge structure is presented which forms the upper end of the outer pocket B. After the parts have been assembled as shown in Fig. 10, the upwardly extending part 22 is folded over as shown in Fig. 11 so as toy 45 form the pocket facing 23. In folding over the extension 22 the edge 24 is turned in and then the various lines of stitching are applied. It Will therefore be seen that the pocket facing 23 is stitched to the tabs I6 and I1 and the lower 50 Y the ends of the edge 2|, said bar tackings extending partly over the facing 23 and partly over the cover section I8. In addition, a buttonhole 28 is provided in the facing 23, said buttonhole 5 extending through the inner wall 5 so that this buttonhole may be used as a pencil pocket. The nal action before stitching the various parts to the body I is to turn over the respective edges 29 as shown in Fig. 12 and then place the parts on l0 the shirt body I and apply the various lines of stitching 30. As a nal reinforcing and trimming, tacking bars 3| and 32 could be appliedY to the corners of the facing 23, the threads-of the tacking bars extending through the shirt 15 body. In this way a pocket is provided which in a certain sense has the appearance of a single pocket formation with a single pocket chamber, but by reason of the special construction described there is provided a large inner pocket chamber 4 and a much smallerouter pocket chamber 6.- A button 33 is secured to the inner wall 5 so as to be readily passed through the buttonholel I3 whenever desired.
As shown in Fig. 1, only one pocket structureis disclosed on the shirt body, but it is evidentV that two or even more could be applied without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim: 1. The combination with a shirt body, of a pocket comprising an inner wall secured to said shirt body along its lateral sides and'bottom for forming an inner pocket and an outer wall having a restricted portion secured to said inner wall intermediate the sides of the inner wall to form an outer pocket, said outer Wall having a cover section covering said outer pocket, and seams for securing said cover section to said inner wall at the sides and bottom of the cover section, said seams extending through the lower end part 40 of said restricted portion, said innerwall Vand the shirt body. a
2.'The combination with a shirt body, of a pocket therefor comprising an inner wall, an outer wall formed with an exposed section and an under section, a hidden seam on each lateral edge of said under section for securing the kunder section to the inner wall, the space between said inner wall and said under section forming a primary pocket chamber, and an exposed seam extending through the lateral side edges of said inner and outer walls and at the bottom extending through the lower ends of said exposed sec'- tion, said under section and said inner wall, said exposed seam at al1 points extending through said shirt body, said inner wall and said body forming an auxiliary pocket.
3. The combination with a shirt body, of a ypocket therefor comprising an inner wall, an outer wall formed of a sheet of fabric having a recrectangular extension, a pair of hidden seams for securing the lateral side edges of said rectangular extension to said inner wall, said inner wall having a folded-over upper end presenting a pocket facing overlying said tabs, seams for securing lthe 4pocket facing to said tabs, and a seam for connecting the lateral side edges and the bottom edge of said inner and outer walls including the end of said rectangular extension to Y the body of said shirt whereby innerand outer pocket chambers are presented.
f4. The combination with a shirt body, of a pocket therefor comprising a rear'wall of a given length, a front wall superposed on said rear wall,
said front wall extending from the bottom of x said rear wall but falling short of the top -of said rear wall, a facing formed of the turnedover upper end of said rear wall, stitchingA for securing said facing in position with its-lower edge substantially contacting with the upper end edge of said front wall, and means for securing the bottom and lateral edges of said front and rear walls to said shirt body, said front and rear walls at the top being unconnected to the shirt body or to each other whereby two pocket cham- ,1
bers are formed with entrance openings at the top of the respective walls. Y 5. A pocket adapted to be secured to the body of a shirt comprising a substantially rectangular Iinner wall, an-outer Vwall formed of a sheet of fabric having a substantially rectangular part and a rectangular extension, said rectangular part having notches `in one edge adjacent and parallel" with the sides of said rectangular extension, said rectangular extension being folded over to lie flat against said rectangular part, the line of folding of said rectangular extension being in line with the bottom of said notches whereby the portions of said rectangularA part adjacent said notches form projecting tabs' projecting beyond the line of folding of said rectangular extension, a pair of hidden seams for securingthe lateral side edges of said rectangular extension to said inner wall, said inner wall having an upper part folded over said tabs and Vpresenting a pocket facing extending to said line of folding of said rectangular extension, and seams for securing the pocket facing to said tabs.
