ATTORNEY.
Patented Apr. 13, 1937 UNHTED STATEfi eAT ENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
The main object of this invention is. the provision of a novel dispensing means for cans or other containers from which powder, such as tooth powder, is to be dispensed, whereby an excessive flow of powder and consequent wastage are avoided.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a rotatable member within the neck of the container, the rotatable member being provided with spaced apart radial paddles, the compartments between adjacent paddles serving to receive a limited quantity of powder and upon their rotation to the outside of the neck to dispense this quantity on the brush.
Still another object of the invention is the provision of a cap mounted on the neck of the container, the cap being so constructed that when the mouth of the container is opened the cap serves as a guide to keep the mouth of the container on the brush while the container is being moved along the brush to dispense the powder.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts in the accompanying drawing.
Referring briefly to the drawing,
Figure l is a view partly in section illustrating the device in operation.
Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 3.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 4.
Figure 4 is a plan view of the container.
Figure 5 is a plan View of a modified form.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral it represents a tooth powder container having a neck H which is square in cross section. The shaft 52 is mounted in opposite walls of the neck ii, and rotatably mounted on said shaft is a sleeve it having a number of radial spaced apart blades l t extending therefrom. The length of the blades H3 is equal to half the distance between opposite walls of the neck H, and the width of the blades is equal to twice their length.
On one of the walls I l which supports one end of the shaft l2, a pin 15 is rotatably mounted. A cap it is rigid with the pin it and is provided with a handle H which serves also as a limit stop. the underside of the cap it is provided with an arcuate cut-out portion 98 which serves to permit free rotation of the blades it when they successively approach their outermost position during rotation. It is to be noted that each blade in the latter position extends slightly beyond the neck walls H of the container.
In use, the handle I! is first rotated to lift the cap Hi to open the mouth of the container. In its fully open position the cap It extends parallel with the neck wall I l to which it is attached, and the handle I! lies flush against the wall. The tooth brush is then placed against the mouth of the container at right angles to the shaft 13 with the cap I 6 extending down one side of the brush. The container is then moved forward along the brush with the depending cap I6 serving as a guide to facilitate keeping the brush at all times against the mouth of the container. As the container is thus moved, the paddle blades M will be rotated, and in their rotation they will deposit on the brush the limited quantity of powder which they contain and which they received when they were on the container side of the mouth. It is thus obvious that a continuous pouring of powder out of the container is prevented, which consequently prevents excessive wastage of powder. After the brush has been covered with powder, the container is again set upright and the cap it rotated into closed position. A spring may be provided to normally urge the cap [6 into closed position.
In the modified form shown in Figure 5, the neck I9 is circular in cross-section so that each paddle blade is consequently semi-circular in outline. In other respects the structure is similar to that shown in the form described above.
Obviously, modifications in form and structure may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. In a container having a neck, a member rotatably mounted in said neck and having a plurality of paddle blades extending radially therefrom, the length of said blades being such that when a blade is in its outermost position toward the mouth of the container the edge of said blade extends beyond the periphery of said mouth, and a cap hingedly mounted on said neck, said cap having a cut-out in its underside.
2. In a container having a neck, a member rotatably mounted in said neck and having a plurality of paddle blades extending radially therefrom, the length of said blades being such that when a blade is in its outermost position toward the mouth of the container the edge of said blade extends beyond the periphery of said mouth, and a cap hingedly mounted on said neck, said cap having a cut-out portion intermediate its underside, said cap having a handle extending therefrom in a straight line from said cap, said handle lying flush against the side of said neck when the cap is fully opened, said cap in the open position serving as a guide to preventslipping of the container neck from the tooth brush during move-- ment of the neck along said brush.
3. In a container having a neck, a member rotatably mounted in said neck and having aplurality of paddle blades extending radially therefrom, the length of said'blades being such that when a blade is in itsroutermost position toward the mouthof thecontainer the edge of said blade extends beyond the periphery of said mouth, a cap hingedly mounted on said neck, said cap having an arcuate cut-out portion intermediate its underside. V l 4. In a container having a neck, a; member rotatably mounted in said neck and having a: plurality of paddle blades extending radially therefrom, the length of said blades being suchthat when a blade is in its outermost position toward the mouth of the container the edge of said blade extends beyond the periphery of said mouth, a cap hingedly mounted on said neck, said cap having an arcuate cut-out portion intermediate its underside, and a handle extending from said cap from the axis of said rotatable mounting,
said handle lying flush against the slide of said neckwhen the cap is fiilly opened, said cap in the open position serving as a guide to prevent slipping of the container neck from the tooth brush during movement of said neck along the brush.
