Application April 15,
.1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in derricks for use particularly in oil fields and has for its primary object to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a novel construction and arrangement through the medium of which the derrick may be expeditiously erected with a minimum of labor.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a derrick of the aforementioned character which will be comparatively simple in construction,
strong, durable, light in weight and which ma be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-.- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation,
the derrick before it is erected.
Figure 2 is a view in side elevation, showing the derrick erected with parts broken away in vertical section. Figure 3 is a view in front elevation of the lower portion of the invention.
Figure 4 is a view in front elevation of the upper portion of the invention.
Figure 5 is a view in rear elevation of the lower portion of the invention.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention which has been illustrated comprises a base I of suitable material having an inclined or beveled forward end 2. The reference numeral 3 designates a taperedinner frame of suitable material which is pivotally mounted on the rear end portion of the base I, as at 4.
The reference numeral 5 designates a tapered outer frame having fixed on its narrow inner end an angularly extending frame 6 to which the free end of the frame 3 is pivotally connected, as at l. Journaled in the frame 6 is a pulley 8. Pivotally mounted on the free outer or lower end of the frame 5 are shoes 9. The frames 3 and 5 include suitable braces or struts III.
A snatch block II is secured by a bridle 2| to the free end portion of the frame 5. Pulleys I2, I 3 and I4 are journaled in the frame 3 adjacent the free end portion thereof. Journaled on the base I adjacent the pivoted end of the frame 3 is a drum l5 which may be actuated by suitable means, such as a hand crank it. A cable H has one end secured to the drum ii for winding thereon. The reference numeral 1936, Serial No. 74,528
l8 designates a mast or gin pole constituting an important part of the apparatus for raising the derrick. A pulley I9 is journaled on the upper end of the gin pole 18. From the drum IS, the cable l'l extends around the snatch block ll, then over the pulley l2, then under the pulley i 3, then up and over the pulley IS on the gin pole l8, and then under the pulley l4 and has its other end anchored to the base I, as at 20. It will be observed that the gin pole i8 is located between the pulleys l3 and H when the derrick is to be erected.
It is thought that the operation of the invention will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. The apparatus is disposed substantially as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings at the site where it is to be erected. With the'gin pole l8 in position between the rollers I3 and I4 and the cable I! trained over the pulley is on said gin pole, the drum i5 is actuated in a direction to wind said cable thereon. The gin pole l8 functions to break or jack knife the sections 3 and 5 at the hinged joint therebetween, as suggested in dotted lines in Figure 1 of the drawings. After this has been done the cable I 1 draws the free or lower end of the frame 5 toward the pivoted end of the frame 3, the shoes 9 riding up the inclined end portion 2 until said frame 5 rests on the base I, as best seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. The derrick is now ready for use.
It is believed that the many advantages of a derrick constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily. understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the apparatus is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:--
A derrick comprising, in combination, a base including an inclined end portion, a frame pivot-- having one end anchored to the base and its other end secured to the drum for winding thereon, said cable being trained over the pulleys for drawing said other end of the second-named 5 frame toward said one endof the first-named frame for elevating the plvotally connected inner ends of the frames when said cable is wound on the drum, the second-named frame resting on the base when in substantially vertical posltlon.
