m D O R M FASTENER DEVICE .FOR A BAG Filed Deo. 18. 1955 NVENTOR WAM-4 @M Ew mi? ATTORNEYS Y Patented Mar. 16, 1,937v
UNITED STATES FASTENER DEVICE FR A BAG Matthias Rodin, Paris, France, assigner to Hyman Gordon Kates, New York, N. Y.
Application December 18, 1935, Serial No. 55,003 In France March 4, 1935 1 Claim.
My invention relates to fasteners for hand bags, travelling bags, brief cases, kitbags, suit cases and the like, and more particularly to those wherein means are provided for positively hold- 5 ing the fastener elements in the closed position.
It is an object of my invention to provide. a fastener of the type referred to`which is of rugged construction, simple and reliable in operation and easy to manufacture.
A further object of my invention is to provide i means whereby such a fastener can be secured against accidental opening.
A still further object of my invention is to provide such a fastener which is of compact design and of pleasing appearance.
With these and other objects in view, I will now describe an embodiment of my invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the fastener according to the invention mounted on a bag frame, in the open position.
Fig. 2 shows a slightly modified form of the fastener in the closed position.
On the top of the element I of the bag frame are secured, by soldering, or any other suitable means, three longitudinally split tubular members 3 arranged in longitudinal spaced relation. On the top of the element 2 of the bag frame are secured three tubular members 4 similar to the f members 3 and arranged tol t, in the closed position of the frame, into the spaces between said members 3.
A member 5, ilexible in one plane and substantially rigid in a plane perpendicular to the rst and which may be made of any suitable material,
e. g., composed of linked elements,` leather strip,
or the like, is adapted to slide freely in said tubular members 3, 4 and can be made to connect said 10 members 3 and 4 together when the frame is in When itis desired to close the fastener, the exible member 5 is pulled into the tubular members 3, 4 by exerting a longitudinal pull on the knob 6. To open the fastener, it suffices to pull the knob 6 in the reverse direction, or to pull on the tab 1.
A safety device may be provided in the form of a ring 8 at the end of the member 5. Said ring 8 projects beyond the last tubular member through which the flexible member 5 passes in the closed position, and a padlock or any other appropriate locking device can be passed through it.
It is obvious that the invention has only been described in a purely explanatory and non limitative manner, and that various modifications of detail could be made therein, without departing from the scope of the appended claim.
For instance, although three tubular members 3, 4 of rectangular cross-section have been shown on each of the frame members I, 2, it is obvious that any number of such tubular elements could `be provided on the frame, and that they might have any suitable cross-section.
I claim:
A fastener device for a bag comprising two cooperating closure members, a plurality of elongated slotted tubular members secured in horizontal alignment to each of said closure members, said tubular members on each closure member being longitudinally spaced to receive therebetween tubular members on the other closure. member when the closure members are brought together, a flexible bolt member slidably disposed in one of said tubular members and slidable through the other tubular members to secure the closure members together, operating means secured to said bolt member adjacent one end thereof and protruding laterally through the longitudinal slot in said tubular members for moving said bolt member to the closed position,
an operating element secured adjacent the other end of said bolt member for withdrawing the same to the open position, and means on one end cf said bolt member extending through one of the end tubular members when the bolt member is in the closed position for receiving means for locking the bolt member.
