Guy c. oliver, olenaneceur. Appueeaon December 4, 1935,: serieu' No. 52,820
1a claims. (ci. ess-"12) This-invention to core barrels.
apertures at their upper-ends terminate in shoul- The eneral obiect of my invention is to iers 2I,and,a t tne'irlower-ends merge into apertures 22 which apertures 22 at their -inner ends provide a .-ore barrel including a bit-head and-a noel oore receiving member A further abject of my a core barrel with novel means circulation within the barrel.
A further object of the invention is to provide a core barrel including an outer and inner barrel for providing 1'0 so constructed and arranged that circulation, is
provided between the inner and outer barrel and wherein the .discharge of iluid from between'the barrels is effected in a novel manner.
Another object of the invention is to provide 15 novel means for a core so 'that triction between the to a minimum.
Another object of the invention is to provide no vel means foradiusting the position oi the n inner core barrel relative tothe bit. other objects and the advantages o! thisln- 'ventin will be apparent from the following description taken 'in cbnnection with panying drawing, and wherein:
Fig.1isacen sectionalview 'i'acore barrel 2 embodying the fee -of my invention;
Figfzisafragmentary viwsimilartorigd internal .ange 36 on the couplingmember 34.
A5A post 31 passes through the ange 36 and' the ripper end of this post has a nut member 38 30- and on a larger the core barrel:
Fis. 3 is al side elevation scale showingthe lower end of snowing the blt:
Fig. 5 is a section taken on line H ofFig. 2;
Referring to the drawingby reference charac-- ters I have shown myinvention as embodied in a 35 core barrel which is .indicated generally as at lll.'
As shown the core'barrel is suspended by a sub il which is suspended at the lower end of a drill.
string I2. The core barrel Ill includes a shell I3, the lower end of which is connected-to a collar i4.' The.
^ coun-14 has e blt Is secured at the lower. end
thereof.
'me bit ls' comprises e body having en enr nular ilanse. I6 thereon which is-threaded to the teef-h I1 on the lower c dge thereof which are arranged in a circular fashion and also has reamer blades i8 thereon,'which blades have ed lower cutting surfaces :I9. .'I preferably provide 50 four of these reamer bladesand their outer surfaces are eccentrically disposed, as shown in Fig.
, 4. while the cutting surfaces I9. are disposed at4 varying distances above the lower end` o i' the bit. The body of the blt is Provided with 8. plurality 5 of downwardly direcidiluid apertures-.20. 'Ihese invention is to providey barrel and orcis reduced Fig. 4 is an end view of the core barrel; and
terminate atA the inner surface 23 of the bit. The apertures 22 at their outer ends open through 5 the side of the bit behind the reamer blades i8.
The interior of the bit is threaded as at 24 Just below the shoulder 2| and the .threads zi 'engage .ture 28 I mount a stem 29 which has'a Vwrencli engaging portion in on the upper end thereof. A hollow lockcap 3i is mounted on .the stern 29 20 and when' this cap is tightened it locks the threaded stem 29 'in adjusted position."
'lllhel -stem 29 has a flange 32-'on'the lower end thereof.' 'rms aange az includes e. sku-c az which- .is threaded in the end ot a coupling member 24 25 and which engages one element of 'an anti-friction bearing 25. The anti-friction bearing rests on an thereon which en ges the-.anti-fricti-m bearing 35 to thereby rota Jably support the'post. 'C The post 31- is provided witha depending skirt- 4I which is providedwith circugnferentially arranged apertures 42, and the lower end of the 35 slrirt is. threaded as at .43., An inner barrel 44 has its end threaded to engage the threads 43.
'I'he outer diameter of the skirt ,4i and inner barrel 44 is less than the inner diameter of the bar- 'rel 44 so that a space 45 is provided between the 40 two barrels. The upper-end of the space 45 communicates through the apertures 42 .with
the interior ofthe inner barrel. while the lower lower end of the collar. The bit also has cutting or dog 48.
end of the aperture '45 communicates with the inner end of the apertures 22.
Mounted on the lower ,endof the bit I show a core catcher assembly 46 which is provided with a plurality of slots '41 in its-lower end. I n each of these slots 41 I pivotally mount a catch meminner faces .50 and are normally urged -to the position shown in- Fig. 2 by springs SLI Mounted .on the lower end oi the core catcherassembly 46 I show a. flanged collar .52.which ts within the bit and which has a lower end which closes 55 These V,dogs -48 have bevelled 60 L. the slots 41. The core catcher assembly ha: a bevel mee sa te direct fluid into the apertures 2 The interior of the core catcher assinbly is provided with a plurality' of resilient 6 nngers B4 which are secured at their lower ends as by rivets 54'. 'I'he core catcher assembly 46 is preferably made of bronze and has a rubber sleeve i5 vulcanized therein. 'I'he sleeve 55 inciudes aA bead 55' which nts in an annular groove l in'the core catcher assembly. The rubber sleeve protects the core from injury due to heat developed by friction while the core is being taken. The lower end of the inner barrel 44 ilts in a .rabbet 56 in the wall of the core catcher as- 1s sembly. The intendidiemeter of the cere-eatener assembly is apprqnmately the same as that of the core which is cut by the bit. while the interior diameter of. the inner barrel 44 is greater than that of the core. As a result there is but 20 very little friction between the core and the core barrel and this amount of friction is conned to the portion adjacent the core catcher assembly 46. Siiice the portion above the core catcher assembly is of greater die-meter. the cere moves 26 free in this portion. This prevents destruction or damage of the core.
In operation my core barrel is secured to the end of the drill string and the normal circulation passcs down the d'rill string and through 30 the space 26 between the buter core barrel and the interior of the shell and passes through the apertures 20 thence to the hole. Some Gf the circulation iiuid will pass with the core into the inner barrel 44 and the cid in this barrel rises 85 until it passes through the apertures 42 thence it passes downwardly through the space 45 between the inner and outer barrel and out through the apertures 22. 'Ihe main circulation. of come. is through the apertures 20 and the cur- 4o rent of iluid moving through apertures 20 createa an injector eect thus maintaining the discharge opening from the end of the apertures 22 unobstructed and toa slight extent drawing the huid through the apertures 22.
45 After the desired length of core has been se# cured the core barrel is withdrawn froih the well and removed from the drill string. The bit is then removed and following this the core catcher assembly '48, which has a tight sliding nt with 50 the inner barrel. .is withdrawn and the core removed.
In assembly the parts are positioned as sho'ivn in Fig. l 4with the cap 3l removed. 'I'he stem 29 is then turned until the collar 52 engages the 55 shoulder at the lower end of the bit. After this the stem` 29 is slightly unscrewed until the inner barrel ro tes freely and after this the lock cap Ii is inserted.
With my invention the circulation. is main- 50 tained through the core barrel by the main huid circulating through the apertures 2li so that there is no stoppage of apertures 22. 'I'he apertures 22 are disposed at the rear oi.' the rearnerV blades I8 and this causes more or less of a swirling action g adiacentthe. apertures 22 to thus further assure that the circulation will be maintained. In addition to the apertures 2 2, I may provide apertures 51 infront of each reamer blade. These apertures 51 communicate with the space 26 but 70 not with the space 45.
With my core catcher assembly 46, I can readily remove a core and the rubber sleeve-within the core catcher assemblyprevents burning of the core. 75 From the foregdlng description it will be apopening therethro h, an outer core barrel mounted on said b` t. an .inner barrel rotatably mounted on said outer barrel, said inner barrel throughout its length being arranged within and spaced from said outer barrel, -means affording communication between the interior and the exterior of theinner barrel, means affording communication tween the interior of the outer barrel and the exterior thereof, and a core catcher aembly mounted on the inner barrel, salir core catcher assembly having an apermre therethrough which is of substantially -the same diameter as that of the bit core opening. both of said apertdres being of less size than that of the interior ofMthe inner barrel.
