My invention relates to windows and particularly to a regulator employed in combination with a window for effecting its operation to open and closed positions.
Various types of regulators have been employed heretofore in the art for moving windows to various positions. Some are employed which move the windows to vertical open and closed positions while others are employed to move the window horizontally.
In practicing my invention, I employ a window regulator in combination with the window which swings the window on pivotal supports for ventilating purposes. The pivots or trunnions are 5 disposed inwardly from the vertical edges of the glass so that a portion of the window swings outwardly of the frame as the remaining portion thereof moves inwardly and so disposed that both portions may be aligned with the frame to have the window sealed therein.
The operating device comprises a worm and worm wheel sector which is supported between two channel-shaped brackets having outwardly directed mated flanges and spaced web portions to form a rigid, yet simple construction. The worm has a recessed pivot which receives one of the trunnions and is provided with a locking strap by which the trunnion is rigidly secured, so that the regulator functions as a support as well as a pivot for the window.
Accordingly, the main objects of my invention are: to provide a window pivoted on trunnions one of which is secured to a device which actuates the window to open and closed positions; to provide an operating device for a pivoted window embodying a pair of worm elements which are encased between channel-shaped brackets embodying means for supporting the regulating device; to provide a regulating device with a worm and worm sector mounted in spaced channel-shaped elements, the upper portion of the sides and outwardly extending flanges of which are secured together to form a housing; to provide a recess in 45 the worm sector shaft for receiving the end of the trunnion of the window and to rigidly secure the trunnion thereto; and, in general, to provide a regulating device which functions as the support and pivot for a window which is simple in 50 construction, positive in operation and economical of manufacture.
Other objects and features of novelty of my invention will be either specifically pointed out or will become apparent when referring, for a better understanding of my invention, to the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a broken view in elevation, with a part in section, of a window and frame and regulator embodying features of my invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 2--2 thereof,
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 3-3 thereof, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional view of the structure illustrated in Fig. 1, taken on the line 4-4 thereof.
In the figures, I have illustrated a frame 5 having a window 6 mounted therein on a pair of vertically disposed trunnions I and 8. A regulating mechanism 9 is secured to the frame in engagement with the lower trunnion 8 for the purpose of swinging the window about the trunnions I and 8 to have portions of the window disposed forwardly and rearwardly of the aligned trunnions, move inwardly and outwardly of the frame.
Referring more particularly to Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the regulating device 9 comprises a pair of nested channel-shaped brackets II and I2 which form the housing for a worm I3 and a worm sector I4 which are mated therein. The bracket I2 has an extension on the bottom web which is flanged downwardly at I5 and reversely flanged at I6 parallel to the web portion of the bracket. The worm wheel sector I4 is disposed between the flange I6 and the web of the bracket I2. A shaft I1 is pivoted on the web of the bracket and the flange I6 and passes through a hub I8 on the sector to which it is secured by a tapered pin or rivet I9.
The brackets I I and I2 pivotally supports the worm I 3 through the engagement of a split bearing element 24 with a bearing 2|, disposed between collars 22 on the worm shaft. The split bearing is formed to have trunnions 25 on the ends which are disposed in aligned apertures in the webs of the brackets II and I2. In this manner the worm I3 is mounted for pivotal movement on the trunnions 25 and for rotational movement through the engagement of the shaft portion 2i with the split bearing 24.
The opposite end of the worm is provided with a shaft extension 26 which is engaged by a hearing segment 21 contained within a tube 28 which is supported on a side flange 29 of the bracket I I. A spring 3| biases the segment 21 toward the shaft to force the worm into intimate relation with the worm wheel sector I 4. A following plate 32 engages the opposite end of the spring which may be adjusted to any position in the tube 28 by a screw 33 to provide the proper amount of tension to the worm l3.
The side flanges of the brackets H and I2 are flanged outwardly at 34 and are mated with each other and permanently secured together by welding, brazing or a similar operation after the Worm and worm wheel have been mounted therein. The regulating unit thus formed, is a simple and compact device which is positive in operation and substantially fool proof. The web of the bracket l2 has a pressed out tongue portion 35 to function as a stop to prevent the worm wheel sector from being moved out of contact with the worm.
The shaft I! is provided with an enlarged shoulder 36 and a reduced extending portion 31 having a square recess extending therein. A portion of the side of the shoulder 36 is machined away, at 38 to a depth to communicate with the central opening. The machine portion 38 is spanned by a plate 39 secured to the shoulder 36 by screws 4 I. The plate 39 functions as a locking element to engage the square end of the trunnion 8 for securely clamping it in predetermined rela tion to the regulator. The outwardly directed flanges 34 of the regulator are provided with apertures 42 through which bolts, screws or suitable securing means 43 extend for the purpose of retaining the regulator on the frame 5.
The end of the shaft of the worm l3 beyond the bearing 2| is provided with a square end 44 to which an operating handle 45 is secured for operating the worm elements relative to each other and therefore the window 5, to move it to open or closed position.
It will thus be seen that the regulator is constructed from two outwardly presented channel elements which are nested together in spaced relation to provide a housing for the worm elements and a support for the unit which is rigid and positive. The worm is urged toward the worm sector by a bearing segment operating on one end of the worm shaft while the other end thereof is mounted for pivotal movement. The driving element of the regulator is rigidly secured to the driven pivot of the window to positively position the window and provide the lower pivot therefor.
While I have described and illustrated but a single embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes, omissions, additions and substitutions may be made therein without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the accompanying claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. The combination with a frame and a window pivoted in the frame and having a trunnion, and a regulator engaging the trunnion for operating the window and comprising a channel bracket having outwardly extending flanges and a downwardly and reversely bent portion, a worm sector mounted between the reversely bent portion and the web of the channel, a shaft extending through the extending portion of the web and the worm sector and rigidly secured to the latter, a worm engageable with said sector, an element pivotally supporting the worm and having trunnion-like extensions, and a second bracket having outwardly extended flanges and greater depth than the first bracket and having nesting relation to the latter and pivotally engaging the trunnion extensions of said element.
2. The combination with a frame and a movable window in the frame, of a support, an elongated plate having portions at its ends secured to the support and a portion intermediate its ends which is bent laterally in a reverse manner to provide a flange substantially parallel to but spaced from the plate body, a second plate extending under the aforesaid flange and having offset ends secured to the support, and means journalled between the plate body, said flange and the second plate and operatively connected to the window for moving it.
3. The combination with a frame and a movable window in the frame, of a support, an elongated plate having portions at its ends secured to the support and a portion intermediate its ends which is bent laterally in a reverse manner to provide a flange substantially parallel to but spaced from the plate body, a second plate extending under the aforesaid flange and having offset ends secured to the support, a trunnion between the first plate body and flange and having its ends journalled in openings therein, a pin between the plates and having its ends supported in openings therein, a meshing worm wheel and worm respectively carried by the trunnion and pin, and means driven by the trunnion for moving the window.
