1 Claim.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in costumers of the folding type comprising a pair of standards provided with supporting feet, and has for one of its important objects to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for securing the feet to said standards to. permit saidfeet to be readily removed, thus providing a costumer which, when packed for shipment, will require a minimum of space.
Another very important object of the invention is to provide a costumer of the aforementioned character embodying anovel construction and arrangement of upwardly braking folding arms connecting the standards together.
Still another important object of Athe invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, novel means for pivotally connecting the folding arms to the standards and for compensating for wear at these points.
Still another important object of the invention is to provide a costumer of the character described embodying a novel arrangement of supporting hooks on the standards.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a costumer which will be comparatively simple in construction, strong, durable, highly efficient and reliable in use, compact,l light in weight, attractive in appearance and which may be manufactured at low cost.
All of the foregoing and still further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from a study of the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:-
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a costumer constructed in accordance with the present invention, showing the same in folded or closed position.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view, showing the costumer in open or unfolded position.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken substantially on the line 3 3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the supporting members for one of the standards.
Figure 5 is an elevational view, looking at the inner side of one of the sections.
Figure 6 is a vertical sectional view, taken substantially on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure 7 is a detail View in side elevation of one of the single supporting feet.
Figure 8 is a detail vView in side elevation of one of the double supporting feet.
sides of the standards I have formed therein verticalgrooves or channels Zprovided with enlargements adjacent their `upper ends (see Figure 5).'
Referring now to Figure 3 of the drawings, it will be seen that polygonal sockets 4 are formed in one side of the standards I for the reception of nuts 5. Extending transversely through the standards I and threadedly engaged in thenutsl 5 are pivot bolts 6 vwhich traverse the lower portions of the grooves 2. Journaled on the pivot bolts 6 are foldable arms 1 which connect the standards I. Washers 8 are provided on the pivot bolts 6 between the end portions of the foldable arms 'I and the opposed side walls of the grooves 2. The foldable arms 'l include half hinges of the type shown to advantage in Figures 2 and 6 of the drawings which break upwardly, said half hinges being designated by the reference numeral 9. Hooks I0 for supporting apparel and other articles are rigidly secured on the upper portions of the standards I, said hooks being preferably arranged substantially as shown to advantage in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings.
Threaded shanks II (see Figure 6) are anchored in the lower ends of the standards I and depend therefrom. Remcvably mounted on the lower ends of the standards I are double and single supporting feet I2 and I3, respectively. The threaded shanks II extend through intermediate portions of the double feet I2 upon which the standards I rest, said intermediate portions being recessed, as at I4. The recesses I4 are for the reception of tongues I5 on the inner ends of the single feet I3. The threaded shanks II pass through the tongues I 5 and wing nuts I 6 are then threaded on said shanks for securing the feet I2 and I3 to the lower ends of the standards. It will be noted that the feet I3 extend at right angles from the feet I2.
Substantially triangular braces I1 and I8 are provided between the supporting feet I2 and I3, respectively, and the standards I. The braces I1 and I8 are detachably secured to their respective feet by screws I9. Fixed in the braces I1 and I8 .and projecting from the inner faces thereof are pins 20 which are engageable in sockets 2| which are provided therefor in the lower portions of the standards I.
It is thought that the operation of the device will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. With the standards I in the position shown in Figure 1 of the drawings, the device has the appearance of and may be used as a conventional clothes tree or the like. However, When greater capacity is required, the standards I are spread to the position shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, the arms 'I unfolding in a manner to provide straight, substantially unobstructed supporting bars upon which conventional garment hangers may be conveniently suspended. Of course, wearing apparel and other articles are also placed on the hooks IIJ. As wear occurs at the joints of the folding arms 'I to the standards I, looseness or play may be eliminated by simply tightening the pivot screws 6 in a manner to draw the wallsof the grooves 2 together. When the device is in folded position, as in Figure 1, the foldable arms 'I are, of course, enclosed and concealed in the grooves 2. The enlargements 3 accommodate the hinges 9 of the arms 1. When the device'is to be packed for shipment, the wing nuts I6 and the screws I9 are removed, after which the feet I2 and I3, together with the braces I1 and I8, may be readily removed. The device may then be packed in a comparatively small space.
It is believed that the many advantages of a costumer constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood, and although a preferred embodiment of the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement oi.' parts may be resorted to which will fall Within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:-
A costumer of the class described comprising a pair of complemental connected standards, said standards having lateral sockets in their lower portions, threaded Shanks anchored in the lower ends of the standards and depending therefrom, double supporting feet engaged with the lower ends of the standards and having recesses in their intermediate portions, the Shanks extending through said intermediate portions, single supporting feet extending at right angles to the double supporting feet and including, on their inner ends, tongues engaged in the recesses of said double supporting feet, the shanks extending through said tongues, wing nuts threaded on the Shanks for securing the feet to the standards, substantially triangular braces detachably secured to the supporting feet and engaged with the standards, and horizontal pins xed in the braces and engaged in the sockets.
