Description

Feb; 9, 1937. M JONES 4 2,070,484
BEACH ACCESSORY Filed Nov. 7, 1955 a /6 1441mm Patented Feb. 9, 1937 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates to a beach accessory.
It is particularly aimed to provide a novel means which is convertible to or from a handbag to or from a headrest with suitable sunshade.
The more specific objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the description following taken in connection with accompanying drawing illustrating an operative embodiment.
In said drawing:-
Figure l is a view in perspective showing the invention used as a headrest;
Figure 2 is a view of the invention in perspective showing its use as a handbag;
Figure 3 is a substantially central longitudinal sectional view taken through the invention in the condition of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a detail cross sectional View taken on the line 4-l of Figure 3; and
Figure 5 is a detail cross sectional View taken on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the invention involves three panels or walls, A, B, and C. Panel A is designed to function as a headrest or pillow in some instances and it consists of a textile fabric casing H) containing an upholstery filling H and also containing reinforcing metallic or wire frame l2 having arcuate free ends l3 extending exteriorly of the casing Said panel B consists of an endless metallic or wire frame M, preferably covered with canvas or other textile fabric l5. Said free ends l3 are pivotally connected at it to the frame l4, and in the vertical position of panel B, it abuts a stop member ll forming part of the frame [2 of pillow A.
Reverting to the panel C, it consists of a metallic or wire frame l8, covered with canvas or other textile fabric L), which, if desired, may be ornamental as shown, and colored after the fashion of awnings and canopies. Said frame is has arcuate free ends beyond the fabric it which are pivoted at 2| to the frame l4, and the frame has an abutment member 22 adapted to engage the frame M in the open position of the device, as shown in Figure 3.
Along opposite longitudinal edges of the casing It, substantialy triangular or other shaped flaps 23 are fastened and same through the medium of conventional separable fasteners 24 are adapted for detachable connection with one side of the canopy B, one part of each separable fastener 28 being fastened to the fabric l5, and the coacting part being fastened to the adjacent flap 23.
On the side of the panel B opposite to the separable fastener parts 24, a movable pocket 25 may be provided in which cigarettes or other 5 small articles may be carried.
Handles of any suitable design are provided at 26 at one end of the panels A and B.
The device may be used in the bag form shown in Figure 2, or it may be used as a headrest, as 1 shown in the form of Figures 1 and 3. In such form as Figures 1 and 3, the head is adapted to rest on the panel A as a pillow, and the weight of the panel C is adapted to maintain the frame B in contact with the abutment I1 and the panel 15 C at the abutment 22 in contact with the frame M.
In the folding of the device from the form of Figures 1 and 3 into the bag form of Figure 2, panel C is swung to the right in Figures 1 and 3 into parallelism with panel B, and such panel as a unit thereafter swung into parallelism with the panel A, whereupon the separable fasteners 24 are connected.
When the panel A functions as a pillow, it is adapted to rest upon the sand along the beach, thus being horizontal. The panel C under such circumstances serves as a cover or canopy, and the panel l4 also serves to cut off undesirable direct rays of the sun.
Attention is also called to the fact that the 30 hinge or pivotal joints at it and 2! may be sufficiently frictioned tight to hold the part in the different adjusted positions against danger of accidental displacement.
Various changes may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention:-
1. A device of the class described having parallel panels, a connecting panel pivoted to each of the first-mentioned panels, an abutment means on each of the parallel panels engageable by the connecting panel and maintained in such engagement through the weight of the uppermost parallel panel.
2. A device of the class described having parallel panels, a connecting panel pivoted to each of the first-mentioned panels, an abutment means on each of the parallel panels engageable by the connecting panel and maintained in such engagement through the weight of the uppermost parallel panel, said parallel panels having arcuate portions between their pivot elements and the zones of abutment.
3. A device of the class described having parallel panels, a connecting panel pivoted to each of the first-mentioned panels, an abutment means on each of the parallel panels engageable by the connecting panel and maintained in such engagement through the weight of the uppermost parallel panel, one of the parallel panels being foldable against the connecting panel, the last two panels being foldable as a unit into bag form with the remaining first-mentioned panel, and flaps to connect the latter panel and the connecting panelseparably together.
4. A device of the class described having an upholstered panel adapted to serve as a pil1ow, a frame Within said panel having arcuate porsecond-mentioned panel.
