Description

I Jan. 19, 1937. A. s, @T15 2,068,386
I AMUSEMENT DEVICE Filed July 9, 1954 Patented Jan. 19, 1937 N UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
This invention relates `to amusement apparatus and has particular reference to a device which is useful in playgrounds, amusement parks, fairs,4 or similar places.
The invention broadly comprehends a device orA apparatus' byl virtue of which the user may enjoy the sensation of jumping to extraordinary heights or distances from a resilient or springy rebound means, onto a padded or resilient landing surface, the device or apparatus being so constructed and arranged as to guard against injury and insure absolute safety to the user.
The invention more particularly resides in the provision of a device or apparatus of this character in which the landing is located adjacent to and extends partially around the forward portion of the means having the resilient rebound, and means defining the supporting surface from which the jump is made.
The invention further embodies a landing which includes a series of landing areas disposed at relatively different heights.
As a still further object the invention provides a device or apparatus of the indicated character which may be optionally employed by the user in a number of various ways.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this nature which is comparatively simple and not unduly lcomplicated in its structure, is capable of economical production and erection and which is highly attractive and amusing to the user.
With the above enumerated and other objects in view, reference is now made to the following specification and accompanying drawing in which there has been disclosed,by way of example, a preferred embodiment of the invention, while the appended claims cover variations and modications thereof which fall within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of an amusement device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view therethrough taken on a plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference, 5 designates a resilient rebounding means such as a platform having an upper supporting surface 6 from which the user is adapted to jump. The resilient rebounding means 5 may be of any suitable form but as shown by way of example, the same is in the form of a platform having a depending centrally disposed stem 'I which is guided for vertical movement in a tubular standard .8 rigidly attached to a base 9. A coiled expansion spring I is anchored at its upper end II to the upper end of the standard 8 and is fastened at its lower end as at I2 to the lower end of the stem 'I so that the user by jumping onto or up and down upon the upper surface 6 of the means or platform 5, expands the spring I0 and tensions the same to cause the platform to spring upwardly when the tensioned spring reacts. This resilient rebounding of the means or platform 5, in addition to the jumping action of the user, permits the user to jump tc extraordinary heights cr distances.
The device also includes a means I4 constituting a padded or resilient landing upon which the user is adapted to alight after the jump and the means I4 may be of various forms, such as the stepped structure shown by way of example, including the horizontal treads I and risers I6 which connect the same. The structure or means I4 includes a covering I'I beneath which is a soft padding I8 and the covering and padding portions which overlie the treads I5 of the structure have interposed therebetween a plurality of coiled springs I9 to absorb the shock of landing on the landing means or structure I4. The stepped arrangement provides a series of landing areas which are disposed in planes at relatively different heights by virtue of which the user may test his skill in jumping to the relatively different heights and different distances from the platform or resilient rebounding means 5, while the resilient and padded character of the means I4 reduces to' a minimum the possibility of injury to the user.
As shown in the embodiment illustrated, the landing structure I4 is so constructed and arranged as to provide portions thereof which extend partially around the forward portion of the means 5 in order to serve as a guard against injury to the user.
The device may further include a second landing means disposed in rear of the landing means I4 which means 25 as illustrated, is in the form of a sheet of exible material resiliently supported at the corners and maintained in a normal stretched taut condition by coiled springs 26, the inner ends of which are fastened to the sheet 25 through grommets 21, and the outer ends of which are anchored to supporting posts 28. The device may be optionally employed by the user either to jump from the means 5 onto the means I4 and then onto the landing means 25, or to jump from the means 5 over the means I4 as an obstacle and onto the landing means 25.
The device may be installed in public playgrounds, amusement parks, fairs, or any similar place, and a series of the devices may be arranged in a fenced runway to which admission may be charged. Due to its general structure and arrangement, the device is safe, While affording the user amusement through the sensation of jumping to extraordinary heights or distances With the assurance of a maximum of safety.
What is claimed is:
1. An amusement device including a resilient rebounding means having an upper supporting surface from which the user is adapted to jump and a resilient landing upon which the user is adapted to land, said landing being located adjacent to and extending partially around the forward portion of said means to provide a guard for the opposite sides of the resilient rebounding means.
2. An amusement device including a resilient rebounding means having an upper supporting surface from which the user is adapted to jump and a resilient landing upon which the user is adapted to land, said landing being located adjacent to and extending partially around the for- Ward portion of said means to provide a guard for the opposite sides of the resilient rebounding means, and said landing including a series of landing areas disposed in planes at relatively different heights.
3. An amusement device including a resilient rebounding means having an upper supporting surface from which the user is adapted to jump and a resilient landing upon which the user is adapted to land, said landing being located adjacent to and extending partially around the forward portion of said means to provide a guard for the opposite sides of the resilient rebounding means, said landing including a series of landing areas disposed in planes above the plane of the supporting surface of said means and located at relatively different heights.
4. An amusement device including a resilient rebounding means having an upper supporting surface from which the user is adapted to; jump, a resilient landing upon which the user is adapted to land, and an obstacle located between said means and the landing, said obstacle having a padded resilient surface and including stepped portions located in planes at relatively different heights.
