Description

Dec. 29, 1936. H, MITH 2,065,622
COSTUMER Filed June 24, 1935 Mi/022ml INVENTO HIS ATTORNEYS:
Patented Dec. 29, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to a costumer.
It is an object of this invention to provide an improved costumer which is relatively simple and inexpensive in construction and efficient in use.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved method of constructing and assembling a costumer for supporting articles of clothing such as hats, coats and the like.
Another object of the present invention is to provide an improved method of attaching the clothing-supporting members or hooks to the ring which supports same upon the vertical column or standard of the costumer.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved method for assembling the clothing-supporting unit upon, and for attaching the same to, the vertical standard or column of the costumer.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, showing the preferred form of construction and in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of a costumer embodying a preferred form of the present invention;
Fig. 2 is a so-called exploded vertical sectional view of the present costumer showing the parts thereof prior to assembly;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 in Fig. 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line 4-4 in Fig. 2.
A preferred form of the present costumer is shown in the drawing,is therein generally indicated at I0, and comprises a vertically extending supporting column or standard II. This column or standard II includes an outer tubular sleeve I2 within which is arranged a post or rod I3; and the column II also includes a vertical post or rod I4, the posts or rods I3 and I4 being interconnected by a threaded coupling I5.
Arranged upon the upper end of the tubular outer sleeve I2 is a cup-shaped seat or flange l6 in which is provided a group of openings I1 and when the device is in assembled position (as in Fig. 1) screws or bolts are inserted through these openings I'I into threaded openings I8 which are formed in a coupling ring I9, this coupling ring I9 being slidably mounted upon a tubular sleeve 2|] into which the upper post I4 is inserted when the device is assembled as in Fig. 1; the coupling ring I9 being retained upon the sleeve 20 by means of a flange 2|.
Slidably mounted upon the sleeve 20 above the coupling ring I9, is a cone-shaped member 22, which has a depending skirt or flange portion 38 which projects downwardly between the sleeve 20 and the coupling ring I9, and fastened to the sleeve 26 above the member 22 is a coupling ring 23 which has an angular flange 24, and provided in this flange 24 at radial intervals therearound are notched or cut-out portions 25.
The costumer I6 includes a hook-supporting ring 26 and embedded in this ring 26 are anchor portions or arms 21 of garment supporting members or hooks, which are generally indicated at 28, and each of which includes an upwardly extending arm or hook 29 and a depending arm or hook 30.
Provided in each of the arm or anchor portions 21 of the garment supporting members 28 is a notch portion 42 (Fig. 3) and extending into each of these notched portions 42 is a portion 3| of the body of the ring 26 (Fig. 3).
The costumer I also includes a coupling ring 32 which is arranged above the hook-supporting ring 26 (Fig. 2), and provided in this.
coupling ring 32 is a notched or cut-out portion 33, and adapted to be received in this cut-out portion 33 is a depending key portion 34 which is formed in an ornamental canopy ordome-shaped member 35. Provided in the upper end or top portion of this dome-shaped member or canopy 35 is an opening 36 and extending into this opening 36 is a threaded stem or bolt 31.
Provided in the peripheral edge of the coupling ring 32, on the bottom side of the latter, and at radial intervals therearound (Fig. 2) are notched or cut-out portions 44.
For the purpose of convenience, all of the parts 20 22-232632 and 35 will be generally referred to hereinafter as the unit 4|.
In the manufacture of the present costumer the arm or anchor portions 21 of the garment supporting members 28 are preferably made of relatively hard metal and these arms or anchor portions 2! are inserted into a mold and the metal which forms the body of the ring 26 is then poured into the mold, whereupon the metal flows around the arms or anchor portions 21 of the garment-supporting members or hooks 28 and into the notched or cut-out portions 42, which are provided therein, thereby securely fastening the garment supporting members 28 to the supporting ring 26 without the use of attaching elements, such as screws, or the like, and thus effecting a permanent union between the supporting ring 26 and the garment supporting members or hooks 28.
The method of assembling the present costumer is as follows: the parts being arranged in the relative positions in which they are shown in Fig. 2, the cone-shaped member 22 is moved upwardly upon the sleeve 20 until its upper end bears against the bottom of the coupling ring 23, and the coupling ring I9 is forced upwardly upon the sleeve 20 so that the same encircles the flange 38 of the cone-shaped member 22; while at the same time the hook-supporting ring 26 is arranged upon the coupling ring 23 in such a manner that the depending hooks 30 project into the notched portions 25 which are formed in the flange 24 of the coupling ring 23 and the upwardly extending arms or hooks 29 project into the notched or cut-out portions 44 of the coupling ring 32. During this assembling operation the coupling ring 32 is arranged upon the hook-supporting ring 26 and the canopy or dome 35 is arranged upon the coupling ring 32 so that the key portion 34 of the dome 35 projects downwardly into the notched or cut-out portion 33 which is formed in the ring 32. The bolt 3! is then projected downwardly through the aligned openings 35 and 39 into the body of the sleeve 29, whereupon the parts embodied in the unit II and thus assembled are fastened together by means of a suitable nut 40 and washer 43, the nut being attached to the threaded bolt 31 by means of a socket wrench or the like which may be inserted into the sleeve 20 through the open lower end thereof.
The assembled unit M is then arranged upon the post I4 of the column I I by slipping the sleeve 29 over the latter, so that the flange 2| of the sleeve 20 rests upon the coupling ring I6. The unit 4| thus assembled and placed upon the post portion I4 of the column I I is then fastened in position by means of bolts or screws which may be inserted through openings H in the coupling ring I 6 into the threaded openings I8 in the coupling ring I9.
It is to be noted that in the construction of the present costumer the arms or anchor portions 21 of the garment-supporting members 28 are attached to or molded into, the supporting ring 26 without the use of screws, bolts, or other attaching means, so that a permanent union is effected between these parts; and the garment supporting members 28 are thus prevented from becoming detached or loose, which has been a diificulty experienced in the use of certain of the prior art costumers, in the construction of which the hooks are attached to their supporting member by means of screws or the like, and which screws or the like become loose when the costumer is in use.
It is also to be noted in connection with the present costumer that the several elements or parts of the unit M are attached to the column I I in a relatively simple and yet expeditious manner, and by means of a single operation, namely by means of screws which are inserted through the openings I! in the coupling ring I6 into the corresponding threaded openings I8 which are formed in the coupling ring I9; thereby effecting a saving of time and labor in the construction or assembly of the present costumer.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification, without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A costumer comprising a vertical supporting column including an upper end portion having a laterally projecting flange thereon; a sleeve removably mounted upon the said upper end portion of said column; a garment-supporting unit detachably arranged upon said sleeve and including a supporting ring; hooks attached to and formed integrally with said supporting ring; a plurality of clamping members arranged upon said sleeve upon opposite sides of said supporting ring and movable vertically relative to said supporting ring; and means, including a member slidably mounted upon said sleeve and detachably attached to said flange, for detachably attaching said clamping members and said supporting ring together and upon said column.
2. A costumer comprising a vertically extending column or standard including an upper end portion having a laterally projecting flange thereon; a sleeve removably receivable upon the said upper end portion of said vertically extending column or standard; a supporting ring; and garment or clothing-supporting hooks attached to and extending from said supporting ring; means for detachably coupling said supporting ring to said sleeve including a member slidably mounted upon said sleeve and detachably attached to said flange, for detachably attaching said sleeve to the said upper end portion of said column or standard.
