5 Claims.
- My 'invention'consists of an improvement in woodworking machines and is a division of my prior application Ser. No. 10,827, filed Mar. 13, 1935.
The particular portion of the original application herein involved relates to the jig saw construction therein disclosed, and is illustrated and described herein as an operative part of the whole original 'machine.
The machine as a whole comprises a suitable supporting frame provided with a cover top or table, preferably adjustable to varying inclination; and capable of being elevated to inoperative position for access to the interior.
The jig saw unit, as to its upper frame, is so mounted as to be capable of adjustment towards or'from'the operating plane of the table top and to be actuated through driving connections with a prime mover, with suitable clutch mechanism and various'co operating and other elements, as hereinafteri described. 7
Referring to the drawings:-
Fig. 1 is a partial plan viewof the machine showing the jig saw in position for use, in connection with a similarly mounted band saw;
Fig. 2"is' a vertical cross section on the line'- II--II of Fig. 1;
Fig; 3is a similar'sectional view on the line III=-III of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a similar sectional view onthe line IV-IV of Fig. 5; I
Fig. 5 is a partial plan View of the driving connections for the jig saw;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the same, extended, on the line VIVI of Fig. 5.
Referring to the drawings, the supporting framework 2 is generally rectangular, having side and end walls and a suitable mounting base for rigid placement. The frame is preferably made of a single casting and having at its upper portion flat supporting side edges and end bearing members 3 for the adjustable table 4. The latter is hinged to one end portion of the frame, and is capable of being entirely raised out of the way and supported by any suitable means.
The jig saw frame 48 is hingedly mounted for longitudinal and tipping movement on a shaft 43 mounted alongside the main frame. It is provided with a flat base 49 by which, when swung inwardly for work, it rests on an inwardly extending shaft 50a of the main frame, around which the main plate 4 closely fits, as at 5|.
'I'husif'desired frame 48 may be swung slightly one way or the other and then secured by bolt 53 to maintain it and the jig saw in vertical alinement.
Frame 48'arches over across the machine and is provided at its terminal with a housing 55 surrounding a reciprocating stem 56.
Said sternv is mounted'in extensions 51 of the frame, providing bearings therefor, and for spring 58 engaging a' flange 59 of the stem and tending to exert constant reaction upwardly for reverse movement of the saw in its alternating stroke action.
At its lower end stem 56 is provided with a socket 60 engaging a cross pin at the upper end of saw blade 6|, for easy and quick insertion and removal. The saw blade 6! extends downwardly through an opening 62 of the coverplate 4 and is similarly connected by cross slot 63 with a stem 64 of the reciprocating pin or bolt 65. The latter ismounted for vertical movement in a housing or casing 66 of a supporting bearing761 at one side of the pivoted frame member 9.
Bolt is connected through vertical slot 68 by bolt 69 with a pitman 10, the other end of which is connected by bolt or pin 1| with a crank wheel 12 of shaft 13 mounted in the lower portion of bearing 61. Shaft 13 extends across and is-mounted' in a similar bearing'in the opposite arm of frame 9 and is provided with a grooved pulley 14 connected by a belt 15 with a similar pulley 16 which is fixedly connected with the plural groove pulley 28, so that all three operate together.
It will thus be seen that when pulley 28 is driven from a cross shaft or prime mover, pulleys 16 and 14 will also be driven, and the latter may be connected or disconnected, as desired.
For operating the jig saw, pulley 14 is provided with a clutch 11 freely rotatable on shaft 13, and a clutch 18 in spline engagement with said shaft is provided with a lever 19 pivoted at 80.
As shown in Fig. 6, connected triple groove pulleys 28 and 16 are driven from the main shaft 3| by an individual pulley 3! Jig saw 6i having been connected by its terminals, as in Fig. 2, and adjusted for vertical movement, it will be actuated by shaft 13 and its crank disk 12 so long as clutch engagement 1118 is maintained.
Similarly mounted for longitudinal and tipping movement on shaft 43, may be located a band saw frame 39, as in Fig. 1, resting by its base 40 on an inwardly extending shelf of the main frame, around which the main top plate 4 closely fits.
The construction and operation of the jig saw member of the composite machine herein presented and disclosed in my former application will be readily understood and appreciated by all those familiar with wood working machinery. The entire frame and its parts, upon disconnection from the blade 6|, is readily dispensed with until further need, leaving the table free and open for other Work.
The manufacture and application of the jig saw construction to a multiple wood working machine, or as a single installation, is comparatively simple, cheap, and capable of location in a limited space.
