The invention relates to registers for handling business forms such as forms for recor-ding sales and which may be presented for use and withdrawn for separation by tearing the extracted form along a perforated line or on the fold between the continuous forms.
It is an object of the invention to provide a register for recording business transactions which will have practically universal application. At present there are two distinct types of receptacles in use. In one type, designed for counter use, the forms are ejected by rotating a registering cylinder, each revolution ejecting one form and automatically aligning the next form in the machine. The ejected form must then be torn olf by the operatorl so that two separate and distinct operations must be performed, one for the ejecting of the form and the other for separating the ejected form. The second type of register is known as a finger pull type since the forms are withdrawn by the ngers of the operator and then separated by tearing as described. The invention concerns this latter type of machine which with the improved features will operate with equal efliciency as a portable or stationary register even to replacing the crank operated type of register.
Another object is to provide an improved recording register of the type using the manifold business forms which will properly align the original and duplicated forms with each other and which will have novel means for extracting the registered forms, the same requiring but one operation and automatically locating the next succeeding forms in register.
More specically an object of the invention is toI provide novel release and extracting means for the forms operable by the fingers of the operator in the act of grasping the form to withdraw .the same from the machine.
Further objects of the invention reside in the provision of releas'able registering pins which upon release allow the extraction of the registered form together with its duplicated copies, automatically engaging with the next punched openings to align the succeeding forms and to register them in the machine, and the provision of an uninterrupted tearing edge on which the extracted form can be torn by an 'upward move- Ament thereof. d
With these and various other objects in View, the invention may consist of certain novel features of construction and operation as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the specication, drawing and claims appended hereto.

The type of recording register selected for illustration of the preferred form of the invention consists of a frame of any suitable metal having a base I0, side members II and I2, a stationary end member I3 and an end closure I4 pivoted to the base at I5 and having formed integral therewith an upper transverse ledge I6 provided with depending side flanges I'I and which is bent at right angles to the end closure. The pivoted end I4 is adapted to be opened for loading the machine, that is, locating a packof manifold business forms I8 or other type of continuous forms within the frame, the same rest- -ing on the base I0.
the side members II and I2, respectively, and a rounded rear edge 22 over which the forms pass in the operation of extracting the registered form and locating the next succeeding form in registering position for use. Disposed over the front edge of the top plate 20 is a cover member 23 pivoted at 24 and having its free end bent as at 25 to provide a spring lock, holding the cover member in operative position in contact with the projecting stops 26 (Figure 5) located to the extreme outer edges of the top plate. The front end of the top plate is provided with a pair of spaced openings for receiving the registering pins 30 carried by the strip 3| of spring metal which is soldered or otherwise secured as at 32 to the undersurface of the top plate 20. The metal strip 3l resiliently forces the registering pins up thro-ugh the openings therefor in the top plate and also through the openings 33 in the forms I8 when aligned therewith.
The frame 28 provides a tension and paper lock by applying a slight pressure on the edges of the form when the finger or wrist of the operator is laid thereon. The rear end of the frame is pivoted at 34 to the transverse member 35 secured in any suitable manner to the side members l! and i2 of the register. To permit passage of the forms between the top plate 29 and the tension paper lock 28 its supporting member 35 is located slightly above the top plate which together with the pivot 3f?, is adapted to be covered by flange 'i6 of the end closure Ill. With the flange I6 overlying the pivoted end of the frame 8 the joint 3ft is out of sight, thus adding to the pleasing appearance of the register. The free end of the frame is held down in contact with the paper by the cover member 23 although having limited movement to free the tension on the` forms when it is desired to extract the same. This end of the frame 28 is also provided with a pair of openings 36 in alignment with those in the top plate for receiving the ends of the registering pins 3B projecting above the registered forms i8. Registers of the type disclosed render an original form in addition to one or more duplicated copies and for the purpose it is necessary to provide a sheet of carbon paper, which in the type of machine disclosed passes over the top plate transversely, being located between the forms thereon which travel over the top plate longitudinally. The carbon paper is taken from a roll located in the receptacle Si! provided therefor and which consists of an arcuate bottom plate 39, end plates and a top closure plate 4|, resiliently held in closed position to provide the necessary tension on the carbon strip. The receptacle 38 is secured to the side member Il in spaced relation to provide inger grasping means facilitating in lifting and carrying of the register by one hand of the operator. The ngers of the operator are located under the arcuate bottom member 39 while the thumb is located over the closure to engage a portion of the frame 23, thereby holding the forms against movement. This leaves the other hand of the operator free for recording a business transaction and for extracting the form from the machine in the manner which will now be described.
The invention provides a delivery slide in the form of a member l2 which extends transversely of the register, having downwardly turned ends bent back upon the member but spaced therefrom toI support the shaft 43, Figure 5. The delivery slide is supported for slidable movement by a pair of rods 4t secured to the respective ends thereof and supported from the undersurface of the top plate 2B by brackets 155. Stops lle are provided adjacent the inne-r ends of the rods which are resiliently biased in a direction to hold the member d2 against the register by coil springs 17. The position of the stops G6 limits the travel of the delivery slide i2 which is immediately returned to its position as shown in Figure l by the coil springs (il. The ends of the business forms I8 extend between member l2 and the shaft 133 so that the ends of the forms are in a position to be held to slide 32 by the operator in the act of grasping the form to withdraw the same from the machine. The invention makes use of this act to automatically withdraw the registering pins through the provision of the nger release pivotally mounted on shaft i3 and thereby carried by the delivery slide 42. End 59 of the finger release is located under the delivery slide and operates to confine the ends of the forms therebetween, as shown in Figure 4. The other end 5I extends over the strip of spring metal 3| contacting the strip and being operative to depress the strip to withdraw the pins when the nger release is held by the operator to grasp the ends of the business forms.
As will be seen the operation of holding the forms to the delivery slide and of depressing the registering pins is accomplished by one act of the operator, whereupon the extraction of the forms is initiated by outward movement of the slide and which continues until the stops d6 limit further movement in an outward direction. lThe delivery slide is immediately returned to position requiring only that the operator release the slide and the finger release 5t which although interrupting the act of extracting the form takes place almost simultaneously therewith as the operator maintains his thumb and nger in the same position to grip the projected end of the forms and thus continue their movement, which movement continues until the next openings 33 are located in alignment with the registering pins 3U. As the pins. are free to travel upwardly they are located in the aligned openings, registering the forms in the machine. The member 42 also provides an uninterrupted tearing edge for severing the extracted form. This operation requires that the operator pull upwardly on the extracted form, holding the same against the outer edge provided by the delivery slide and by applying further tension tearing of the forms along this edge is effected. This operation is accomplished almost simultaneously with the act of withdrawing the form and has an added advantage that the tearoif edge may be adjustable as shown in Figure 4 to accommodate various forms. The adjustable edge requires the addition to the delivery slide of a strip 52 co-extensive in length with that of the slide and secured thereto in adjusted position by set screws 53.
I claim:
1. In an autographic register, a substantially ilat writing surface, registering means associated therewith for holding a form in registered position on the writing surface, a delivery slide having limited movement with respect tosaid surface for partially extracting said form, and a member carried by said slide for releasing the registering means to permit extraction of said form.
2. In an autographic register, a substantially flat writing surface, registering means associated therewith for holding a form in registered position on the writing surface, a delivery slide associated with said surface, means mounting said slide for movement with respect to said surface, said slide being operative to partially extract said form, and a member carried by said slide for holding a form to the slide and for simultaneously releasing the registering pins to permit extraction of the form.
3. An autographic register comprising a casing having a substantially at upper surface, said casing being adapted to receive a plurality of connected forms for location successively on said surface, registering means at one end of the surface, said means being adapted to engage with openings in a form to register the same on said surface, a` delivery slide, and a release member carried by the slide and operative to release the registering means, said slide also providing an uninterrupted tearing edge for the extracted forms,

An autographic register comprising a casing having a substantially flat rupper surface, said casing being adapted to receive a plurality of connected forms for location successively on said surface, registering means at one end of the surface, said means being adapted to engage with openings in a form to register the same on said surface, a delivery slide, and a release member carried by the slide and operative to hold the forms to the slide and simultaneously release the registering means to permit extraction of the form, the edge of said slide providing an uninterrupted tearing edge for the extracted form.
5. In an autographic register of the type using continuous forms, a substantially flat writing surface, registering means for holding and registering the form thereon, said means including a plurality cf pins projecting within openings in the form and being operable to permit extraction of the form, a delivery slide supported for slidable movement and adapted to have limited outward movement from said surface, a release member carried by said slide and associated with said registering pins, said member and slide when gripped by the operator holding the form therebetween and said member automatically releasing the registering pins to permit extraction of the form.
6. In an autographic register, a substantially flat Writing surface, registering pins associated therewith for holding a form in registered posiktion on the Writing surface, a delivery slide having limited slidable movement with respect to said surface for partially extracting said form, a release member carried by said slide and havlng operative connection with the registering pins, the free edge 0f Said form being adapted to be positioned between the delivery slide and release member, whereby said form is partially extracted by the act of the operator in grasping the slide and member and withdrawing the slide, said operation initially actuating the member to cause release of the registering pins, and said pins being free to again function as registering means upon release of the delivery slide at the end of the extracting operation.
7. In an autographic register, a substantially fiat writing surface, registering pins associated therewith for holding a form in registered position on the writing surface, a delivery slide having limited slidable movement with respect to said surface for partially extracting said form, a release member carried by said slide and having operative connection with the registering pins, said member being operative to hold the form to the slide and to simultaneously release the registering pins to permit extraction of the form by the outward movement of the delivery slide, and said pins being free to perform their registering function upon release of the delivery slide.
8. In an autographic register, a substantially flat writing surface, registering pins associated therewith for holding a form in registered position on the writing surface, a delivery slide having limited slidable movement with respect to said surface for partially extracting said form, a release member carried by said slide and having operative connection with the registering pins, said member being operative to hold the form to the slide and to simultaneously release the registering pins to permit extraction of the form by the outward movement of the delivery slide, resilient means for automatically returning the delivery slide to initial position upon release thereof, and said pins being free to perform their registering function upon said release of the delivery slide.
9. In an autographic register of the type using continuous forms, a substantially flat writing surface, registering means associated therewith for holding a form in registering position on the Writing surface, a delivery slide having limited slidable movement with respect to said surface for partially extracting said form, a release memv ber carried by said slide and having operative connection with the registering pins throughout the extent of movement of said slide, the free edge of said form being adapted to be located between the delivery slide and member and whereby the same may be grasped therebetween for partially extracting said form, and means for automatically returning the delivery slide to initial position upon release thereof.
