The object of this invention is to furnish an' improved implement for branding live stock, also rails, posts, and other timber, lumber, 8zc.,'whichshall be simple in construction and convenient in use, and so constructed 'that it will enable an old brand to be canceled at the same time that the new one is A represents the body of the holder, which -is made narrow and of sucha length as to receive the number of letters required to be used. The holder Alias a dovetailed groove, a, formed in its face, as shown in Fig. 2, and upon its back is formed, yor,to'it is permanently attached, an arched; bar, (l as shown in Fig. 2.
B are the letters, upon the backs otv which areformed cross-ribs I), which are made dovetailed,'so' as to tit into the dovetailed groove a of the holder A, so that, the said letters may be applied to Orrcmoverbfrom the said holder easily and quickly when desired. The groove a' is closed at one end and left open at the other, and the last letter is secured in place by a set-screw, C, which passes through the said holder A and rests against the cross-bar b, of the said letter. u I
l The letters B maybe made of various sizes,- 1a's .the character of the branding to be done .may' reqnire -as, for instance, when used for branding the hipsbishoulders of horses, mules, cattl e, &c., they should be made large andwith open backs, as showaby the righthaud 'letter in 3, so that the brand may not be rendered indistinct or blotched by the long hair'ofthe animall For branding upon the checks of sheep, and

screw F, which passes through. a screw-hole in the arched bar a, a 1d presses against the than would otherwise be )OSSlblB.
With this constructiorgalsmthe brandingiron will retain its heatlong enough to form *anumber of brands, instead of it being necessary to heat it each time it is used. Having thus fully described my invention,
