Description

Dec. 8, 1936. F. H. RASMUSSEN WASTE AND OVERFLOW FOR BATHTUBS vAND BASINS Filed May 2l, 1956 Patented Dec. 8, 1936 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE WASTE AND OVERFLOW FOR BATHTUBS AND BASINS 3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in overflows for bathtubs and basins, and particularly to that type which include a verticallymovable plug into the waste-pipe and overflow with means adjacent the overflow for operating the plug.
The object of this invention is to provide simple means by which the plug may be readily opened or closed, and to provide means for preventing waste water from entering a tube through which a flexible shaft for operating the plug extends, and the invention consists in means for accomplishing these purposes and other details of construction as will be hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing:
Fig. l is a side View partly in section, illustrating a waste-and-overow for bathtubs and basins, constructed in accordance with my invention; and
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail View of the wasteplug on an enlarged scale, showing the plug in its raised or open position.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a usual bushing I!! mounted in the waste-opening II of a bathtub I2 or wash basin. The tub or basin is also provided near its upper edge with the usual overflow-opening I3 through which overow water may pass into an overflow-head I4 connected by a pipe I5 with a T I5 and a usual fitting I'I which is connected by a horizontal pipe I8 with the T I6.
Mounted in the bottom of the tting is a short tube I9 having a contracted opening 2E! and sitting over this tube is a stem 2l of a plug 22. Preferably, the hole 23 through which the sleeve of the plug extends will be formed on one side with a notch 2&2, and the stem 2l is formed at its lower end with an outwardly-projecting lug 25 which will pass through the notch 24 when turned into alignment therewith, and then, when the plug is turned, will prevent the plugs being withdrawn. As an additional safety against the removal of the plug, the bushing II! will be formed with upturned ears 26 to which a cap 2l may be attached.
The overflow-head Ill is formed at its rear with an opening 28 in which is mounted a tube 29 which projects toward the opening I3, and the tubes 29 and I9 are connected by pipes 3i! and 3l which are connected together by an adjustable coupling 32, and extending through the tubes and pipes is a flexible shaft 33, its lower or operative end being provided with a tapered valve 34 which, when raised, will close the opening 2t in the tube I 9. The upper end 35 of the flexible shaft 33 is connected with a handle 36 which is sleeved over the tube 29 so as to be guided thereby, and this handle passes through the usual strainer 3l which covers the overflow-opening I3.
In Fig. 1 of the drawing, the plug is shown in its closed position and the operating-handle 3S drawn outward. When it is desired to open the plug, the handle will be pushed inward, as shown in broken lines in Fig. l, which will move the flexible shaft so as to lift the plug from its seat to the position shown in Fig. 2. When so lifted, it will be noted that the opening 20 in the top of the tube I9 will be closed, so that no water can get into this tube so as to corrode Athe flexible shaft. It will thus be seen that means for operating a waste-plug is provided, and the shaft for operating the same is so housed that no water comes in contact with it, thus adding to the sanitary qualities of the fixture.
I claim:
l. A waste-and-overflovv xture comprising, a bushing in the waste, a plug seated therein, said plug having a tubular stem, a fitting into which the waste opens, a vertically-arranged tube mounted in said fitting and over which the plugstern extends, a flexible shaft extending from the overflow into the waste-fitting, said shaft provided with a tapered stem adapted when raised to close the tube through which it projects, and means attached to the upper end of the flexible shaft for moving the same, whereby the plug may be lifted from its seat.
2. A waste-and-overlow iixture comprising, a bushing mounted in the waste, a plug adapted to close the upper end of said bushing, said plug formed with a tubular stem provided at its lower end with a finger, the bushing formed with a central opening for the passage of the plug-stem and a notch at one side of said opening through which the said iinger may pass, a flexible shaft extending from the overflow into engagement with the plug, said shaft provided With a tapered stem adapted to close the opening into the tube when the plug is in its raised position.
3. A waste-and-overow fixture comprising, a bushing in the waste, a plug seated therein, said plug having a tubular stem, a fitting into which the waste opens, a vertically-arranged tube mounted in said tting and over which the plugstern extends, a flexible shaft extending from the overow into the Waste-tting, said shaft nterlocked with the end of the flexible-shaft, provided with a tapered stem adapted when whereby inward and outward movement of the raised to close the tube through which it prohandle will correspondingly move the exible jects, a tube mounted in the overow-head shaft to open the waste-plug or permit it to through which the flexible shaft extends, and a close.
handle telescopically movable on said tube and FLOYD H. RASMUSSEN.
