(Cl. 66-98) The present invention relates to an auxiliary presser for flat knitting machines which are adapted for the manufacture of stockings in a single operation and in which, during the manu- 5 facture of the heel parts, the loops of the instep portion or the loops of the intermediate part 'of the stocking are placed in suspense.
Auxiliary pressers acting upon a portion of the frame needles are known already. These auxiliary pressers act upon the frame needles themselves or upon the head of these needles in such a manner, that the needle is bent away from the presser edge.` Moreover, auxiliary pressers are also known by means of which frame needles to l5 be pressed only are bent against the presser edge,
` whereas the frame needles not to be pressed are not affected at all.
All devices of this kind have the disadvantage, that by this particular action the frame needles are unduly stressed, whereby bendings and other damages are caused.
Furthermore, subdivided pressers are also known which are so constructed that' only those parts of the presser remain in connection with the frame needles, which are used to press the needles. 'Ihese latter devices are very complicated in construction and require rather exactly machined devices for effecting their movements and obtaining proper bearing, as, naturally, subdividing of the presser results in a similar insecurity or uncertainty of bearing as the subdivision of the needle bar in the general construction of the loop forming elements.
Now, all these disadvantages are obviated according to the present invention by the fact, that neither the needle bar nor the presser has any subdivisions, but particular pressers are provided in the range of the heel portions only which pressers are brought into active position during the manufacture of the heel parts only. To prevent special modifications of the devices, effecting the movements of the other loop forming elements, precautions are taken, that the auxiliary pressers lie between the frame needles and the presser during the pressing operation proper only, so that the remaining general loop formation may be performed in the normal position of the frame needles. The position of the frame needles, therefore, adapts itself to the altered pressing point during the pressing of the rows of loops of the heel portions and during the shifting of the new loop of the thread upon the beard of the needle immediately following the'pressing operation only.
In the accompanying drawing one embodiment of a device according to the invention is shown by way of example. In this drawing:

The jack sinker bearing I forming part of a l5 conventional flat knitting machine has the usual presser edge 2 with which the frame needles-3 may cooperate. i
Fixed on a rock shaft 4, journalled in the frame of the machine, not shown in the drawing, are 20 levers 5, one or more for each division, carrying a presser supporting means in each division of the knitting machine. This presser support may for instance, as shown in Fig. 3, consist of la substantially T-shaped member 6 to which a presser bar 25 l, carrying presser instruments 8, is xed. This supporting member may, however, also consist of a plate, a frame or the like. The presser supports are so arranged as to be individually movable and each of the presser supportsvis subjected to the 30 action of a spring 9 one end of which is xed to the presser supports, While the other end is connected to the hub 5a of the corresponding lever 5. The spring 9 tends to pull the presser supports towards the jack sinker bearing I. Provided at each of 35 the arms 6 of the presser supports is a cam I D having an inclined surface Illa. Counter-cams II having an inclined surface I Ia are provided at the jack sinker bearing I.
Fixed on the shaft 4 is a cam lever I2 carrying 40 at its free end a shiftable roller I3 which may be laterally adjusted by means of a fork I 5 mounted upon a shiftable rod I4, Fixed upon a cam shaft I6 rotatably mounted in the frame of the machine is a circular disc I 'I and a cam I 8. By shift- 45 I1 and the presser instruments 8 occupy the position shown in Fig. 1 in which their heads are situated beneath the presser edge 2 of theA jack sinker bearing I. As in any normal legging frame, the frame needles 3 are pressed directly at the presser edge 2.
If 4now the knitting of the heel portions is started, therod I4 and with it the fork I5 is shifted, so that the roller I3 is brought into the path of the cam I8. Under the action of the cam I8 the cam lever I2 is raised, whereby the rock shaft 4 is rocked. By means of the levers 5, xed
upon the rock shaft 4, the presser supports are lifted.' During the lifting movement, the presser supports are, by means of the inclined surface Illa of the cams I-Ii rising on the inclined surface I Ia of the counter-cams I I, shifted to the right in The presser instruments 8' are hereby moved in the same direction,
shifted forwardly about the distance a (Fig. 2), corresponding to the thickness of the presser instruments 8. Of course, on account of this advance of the presser point, simultaneously the position of the frame needles must, in a well known manner, also correspondingly be altered during the manufacture of the rows of loops of y the heel portions.
Furthermore, during the sinking operation, the sinker jacks must als? be held in a correspondingly altered position.
What I claim is: 1.` In an auxiliary presser for at knitting machnes adapted for the manufacture of stockings in a single operation, in combination a `iack sinker bearing, a rock shaft, levers fixed upon said rock shaft, supports carrying presser instruments pivotally connected to said levers, a cam operated lever, cooperatingcam means provided at said bearing and at said supports and a spring urging each of said supports towards said jack sinker bearing.
2. -In an auxiliary presser as set forth in claim 1, in'which each of said cooperating cam means is provided with an inclined surface so arranged. that each of said presser supports is, during upward movement, shifted laterally with respect to said jack sinker bearing.
