This invention is a device for perforating the tops of containers for condensed milk, fruit juices and other liquids, which, after a container is perforated, is adapted to act as a closure therefor.
In the drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure I is a perspective view, showing the device inverted;
Figure II is a bottom plan view thereof;
Figure III is a vertical sectional view showing the device in position to be operated for perforating the top of a container, the section through the device being taken substantially on the line IIIIII of'Figure 11, only the upper part of the container being shown;
Figure IV is a similar view showing the upper part of the container in section,.the perforations having been made and the device in the position in which it acts as a closure, the central part of the container being broken away and the bottom part shown in elevation; and
Figure V is a perspective view showing a container the top of which has been perforated by the device of my invention.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the top I of the device consists of a circular plate, which may be ornamented or provided with lettering, as desired. Depending from the edge of the top. I is a circular flange 2, and filling the corv ner formed by the intersection of the top I and the flange 2 is an annulus 3, in the lower surface of which is formed a circular groove 4.
At diametrically opposite sides the annulus 3 isenlarged inwardly to form bosses 5, to which are fixed pointed perforating punches 6 which project downwardly therefrom, the length of the punches being somewhat less than that of the flange 2.
The device is preferably made of a heathardened plastic material, such, for example, as urea-formaldehyde 'plastic material, and when so made, the perforating punches 6 may be molded in place. The upper ends of the perforating punches may be knurled or otherwise provided with rugations or protuberances to assist in holding them firmly in place. My invention is not, however, limited to devices made of plastic material, but also includes devices made of metal or other materials.
In using the device, it is placed on top of a container I, in the position in which it is shown in Figure III. In this position the upper end of the container I is received within the lower end of the flange 2, which thus acts as a guide to facilitate placing the device upon the container, and the points of the perforating punches 6 rest upon the top of the container. To perforate the container, the device is pressed downwardly, thus causing the perforating punches to pierce the top and make openings 8 therein. If the container is provided with an upstanding peripheral flange, such as 9, the flange will, when the device is pressed downwardly in the position in which it is shown in Figure IV, enter the groove 4 and thus not prevent the annulus 3 and bosses 5 from engaging the top of the container. When the top is thus perforated the contents can be poured out, one of the openings 8 serving as an outlet for the contents while the other of the openings serves as an inlet for air. After any desired portion of the contents has been poured out of the container, the device may be replaced in the position in which it is shown in Figure IV, in 16 which position it acts as an effective closure to prevent loss or deterioration of the remaining contents of the container, the perforations being filled by the punches and the annulus 3 engaging the top of the container adjacent its 20 entire circumference.
The embodiment of my invention herein shown and described is to be regarded as illustrative only, and it is to be understood that the invention is susceptible to variation, modification and. change within the spirit and scope of the subjoined claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. In a combined perforating device and closure, in combination, a circular plate having a flange depending from the perpendicular edge thereof and an annulus filling the corner formed by the intersection of the plate and depending flange, the lower surface of the annulus having a circular groove therein lying adjacent the flange and the annulus being enlarged at diametrically opposite sides to form bosses, the plate, flange, grooved annulus and bosses being integrally formed of heat-hardened material, and a pair of perforating punches flxed to and projecting downwardly from said bosses.
2. In a combined perforating device and closure, in combination, a circular plate having a flange depending from the perpendicular edge thereof and an annulus filling the corner formed by the intersection of the plate and depending flange, the lower surface of the annulus having a circular groove therein lying adjacent the flange and the annulus being enlarged at diametrically opposite sides to form bosses, the plate, flange, grooved annulus and bosses being integrally formed of heat-hardened material, and a pair of perforating punches fixed to and projecting downwardly from said bosses, the lower'ends of said punches being located above the level of the lower edge of said flange.
