Patented Nov. 24, 1936 PRINTING PRESS- Nelson s. Welk, Athens, Ohio, assi gnor to The ltgcifiie Company, Athens, Ohio, a corporation 0 Application January 24, 1935, SerialNo.'3 ,201
Claims. (01. 101-295) My invention relates more particularly to those presses described, in United States Patent No. 1,961,828, issued to George A. Rutkoskie, which are designed to print spots of wax carbon on sheets of paper in predetermined locations. In
the patent referred to, the fact is disclosed that wax carbon must be melted to use it and it must be maintained at a critical temperature in order to produce a satisfactory job. Moreover, due to the fact that the wax carbon compound, when melted, is not tacky; it is essential that the rollers be positively driven as the frictional contact of the rollers will not cause them to rotate due to the said lack of tack.
, My invention has for its object to adapt a standard Sheridan vertically reciprocating embossing press to print spots of wax carbon on sheets of paper.
My means of accomplishing the foregoing objects may be more readily understood by having reference to the accompanying drawings which are hereunto annexed and are a part of this specification, in which I show only my attachment and such fragmentary parts of the press as are necessary.
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a press equipped with my improvement;
Fig; 2 is a diagrammatic view showing the rollers;
Fig. 3 is a top or plan view;
Fig. 4 is the opposite side elevation showing I the means employed to positively drive the rollers; and
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view showing the means employed to drive the form rollers.
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the entire description.
As shown in the drawings, the press has standards I and 2 which are provided with vertical guides 3 and 4 in which is mounted an adjustable platen 5 adapted to contact the vertically reciprocating type bed 6, this being standard construction for a press of this character. In adapting the press to wax carbon work, I mount the inking mechanism on a pair of horizontal guides 1 and 8. At each end of these guides are mounted shafts 1' and 8' which carry sprocket wheels 9 and 10 which carry a chain II the ends of which are secured to the inking mechanism as clearly seen in Fig. 4 with the'result, as the sprockets are intermittently oscillated in any suitable or convenient manner which is not shown as such mechanism forms no part of my invention, a reclprocatory motion is imparted to said inking mechanism. The operating mechanism is so timed that the inking mechanism is stationary when it is out from under the platen 5,
so that the reciprocation vertically of the type bed will cause it to press the sheet of paper against the form on-the reciprocating type bed 6. The inking mechanism comprises an ink fountain l2 and an ink fountain roller I3. Electric elements 14 are mounted adjacent the ink fountain to melt the wax carbon compound therein'and maintain it at the required temperature. A ductor roller 16, which intermittently contacts the ink fountain roller I3 carries the carbon to a vibrator roller 11. These .rollers may be positively driven by mounting gears I3, l6 and I1 respectively on each shaft so that when the ductor roller 16 contacts either the ink fountain roller N or the vibrator 11, the ductor roller IE will be positively driven. The vibrator roller 11 is also provided with an electric heating element l8. A rider composition roller l9 contacts the vibrator roller 11 and a distributor roller 20, which contacts a composition roller 21.
The roller 2| carries the carbon to a large steel vibrator roller 22 which transmits it to a distributor roller 23 which delivers it to the ink cylinder 24. This cylinder 24 is preferably provided with a plurality of electric heating elements 25 to maintain the carbon at the required temperature. Form rollers 26, 21 and 28 receive the'wax carbon from the ink cylinder 24 and. deliver it to the form on the type bed 6. As seen in Figs. 4 and 5, a train of gearing I9, 2D, 21', 22 and 23' is provided to positively drive the rollers l1, I9, 20, 2|, 22 and 23.
The ink cylinder 24 is driven by a chain 29- carried by sprockets 30, 3| and 32. The latter is positively rotated by means (not shown). It will be obvious from the foregoing that not only the rollers which carry the wax carbon from the ink fountain are positively driven but that the ink cylinder 24 is also positively driven. The ink cylinder 24 which as explained 'is positively driven by sprocket 30, contacts form inking rollers 26, 21, and 28, distributing the wax carbon thereon. These form inking rollers 28, 21 and 26 are positively driven by gear 40, sprocket 4|, chain 42, sprocket 43, chain 44, sprocket 45, chain 46, sprocket 41, respectively, through the reciprocation of said gear 40 over rack 48. The form inking rollers 26, 21 and 28 are held yieldingly against the ink cylinder 24 1 by means of coil springs 26, 21' and 28' which are mounted in the form inking roller carriage ,50 which slides upon the guides 1 and 8. The coil springs 26 21' and 28, as clearly seen in roller 24.
It may be found desirable to locate an electric heating element adjacent rollers 20 and 2i and to mount an element 35 in the large steel vibrator roller 22. It is also necessary to mount a plurality of electric heating elements 36 in the type bed 6. The'operatio'n of the press, it is believed, will be clear from the foregoing description.
It will also be seen that I have provided means to maintain all partsof the press which contact the wax carbon at the necessary temperature.
Having described my invention what I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
