Description

O. L. STURTEVANT.
Feed-Cooker.
No. 206,138. Patented July 16, I878.
myz m UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ORRIN L. STURTEVANT, OF OGDEN, IOlVA.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEED-COOKERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,138, dated July 16, 1879; application filed May 29,1878.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, O. L. STURTEVANT, of Ogden, in the county of Boone, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Cookers; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a feed-cooker, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section taken through the center of the cooker. Fig. 2 represents a broken section of the bottom of the device, showing the manner of attaching the grate to the heating-vessel.
A represents a tank, cylinder, or barrel for containing water. Within the bottom of this vessel is placed a closed-top cylinder or heatin g-chan1ber, B, which does not extend to the top of the tank A, as seen in the drawings.
The cylinder B is provided with a grate,D, near its bottom, and is also provided with a vertical partition, 0, near its back. This partition extends entirely across the cylinder, but does not extend to the top of the same, and leaves a passage-way at the top for the products of combustion (after striking the top of the cylinder) to pass down the chamber G, and from thence into the exit-pipe F, which communicates with the bottom of the chamber G by means of the ordinary elbow-pipe.
The grate l) is connected atthe rear wall of the cylinder, to hooks or clips b I), while the front end of the grate is secured by a chain, a. By unloosenin g the chain the front of the grate falls down, so that it can be filled with fuel.
The tank A is provided with an opening, .r, near the top, for attaching a hose to convey the steam to the food to be cooked.
It will be seen that the tank A is watertight around the cylinder B, and that this cylinder is closed at the top, open at the bottom, and extends some distance below the tank-bottom.
In operation, water is put in the tank A, surrounding the cylinder B. Fire is started in this cylinder, and, the heat being retained in the same by means of the partition and diving-flue or chamber G, steam is soon generatcd and ready to be conveyed for coohin g through the opening wand the hose.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is The combination of the water-tighttank A, the closed-top and open-bottom cylinder B, projecting within the tank, and provided with a partition, 0, forming a diving-flue, G, and the exit-pipe E, all constructed substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 1st day of May, 1878.
(r). L. STURTEVANT.
