Description

D. G. LYONS. Gage-(100k.
No; 206,030. Patented July 16, 1878.

UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
DANIEL O. LYONS, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS.
IM PROVEMENT IN GAGE-COCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 206,030, dated July 16, 1878; application filed December 11, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL O. L-YONS, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Gage-Cock, of which the following is a specification:
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved gage-cock. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to gage-cocks for steam-boilers; and it consists in a perforated tube which slides through a stuffing-box connected with the boiler, so as to bring the perforation in the tube into communication with the space within the stuffing-box, and permit the escape of steam or water through the tube. The perforated tube is provided with a handle for operating it, and with a head upon its inner end for preventing its withdrawal from the stuffing-box.
Ais a stuffing-box of the ordinary description, which is screwed into the boiler or into a tube projecting from the boiler. Atube, B,
is placed in the stuffing-box, and is provided at its inner end with a cap or head, a, that prevents the tube from being drawn or forced by pressure of steam from the stuffingbox.
An aperture, b, is formed in the tube B at a distance from the head a a little greater than the depth of the stuffingbox, so that when the head a is drawn against the inner face of the stuffing-box A the aperture b will be outside the stufling-box.
A nozzle, 0, is attached to the outer end of the tube B, and to it a handle, d, is fixed. The stuffing-box is packed in the usual way.
When it is desired to try the height of the water the tube B is forced in through the stufling-box until the aperture 11 is inside of the packing, when the steam or Water will escape through the said aperture and through the tube B.
The advantages claimed for my improved gage-cock are that it cannot cut by the action of the steam or water. It cannot become clogged, and is easily repacked when the packin g becomes leaky.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with stuffing-box A, of the tube B, having head a, aperture b at a distance from the head a little greater than the depth of the stuffing-box, anda nozzle, C. all constructed and arranged as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
DANIEL CORNELIUS LYONS.
