2 Claims. (@i. lid-61) My invention relates to a device for frightening away animals, particularly birds, from fields, orchards, vineyards, or the like.

It is an object of my invention to provide a simple and yet efilclent device of the kind reterred to and in order to accomplish this I provide a sheet or strip consisting of metallic foil adapted to be hung near its edge. If for instance the sheet is formed as a strip it is preferably hung near one of its small edges. The thickness of the metallic roll should not exceed .05 mms.

A sheet or strip or metallic foil suspended on. a suitable carrier will be moved even by a slight draught and all the more by a wind and thus produce crackling sounds by which animals will be irightened away. This efiect is aided by the fluttering movement of the sheet and may be increased to a considerable extent by polishing the surfaces of the sheet so as to efilciently reflect strong beams of light the directions of which will considerably vary even at very slight movements of the strips, the animals struck by such beams being dazzled and terrified. By the. effects referred to, if combined, animals as, for instance, starlings and daws, will be frightened away from a relatively large area. surrounding the device, a particular advantage of which consists in that its frightening effect will not be diminished by repeatedly acting upon an animal because the latter will not get accustomed to it.

L1 order to improve the tendency of the strips to move and to produce crackling sounds under the action of draughts or winds preferably the strips are provided with transverse foldings.

It is a further object of my invention to provide a cheap and simple package containing a set of frightening devices according to my invention.

Other objects of my invention will be seen from the following description and the claims appended thereto.

Referring now to the drawing and flrstto Fig. l, l is a strip. made from metallic foil, preferably a light metal, the thickness of which does not 5 exceed .05 ms. lit-its upper edge the strip is folded back, thus forming a rim portion 2 by which the upper portion oi the strip is slung on a reinforcing strip 8 consisting oi card-board or other suitable material. the strip 0, the strip 8 and the rim portion 2 folded to the rear each are provided with a hole 6, these holes being in alignment when the parts are in their operative position as shown in Fig.

1 so that a suitable member, for instance a loop 5 and 6 are transverse foldings provided in the strip I so as to form a rear portion 1 at a distance of the front portions 8 of the strip i. If desired however some more transverse foldings may be provided or the ioldingsmay be dispensed with altogether. Preferably the edges of the foldings are rounded as shown in Fig. 1. Instead of foldings, if desired, other profiles may be used; for instance, the strip i may be shaped so that its longitudinal section forms a wave-line. The surfaces of the strip l are preferably polished so as to reflect the beams of light striking them. I

The operation or the device is as follows:

The sheet or strip l of metallic foil is suspended on a post, a branch oi a tree or of a loop of wire, a cord or the like, which is drawn through the holes 4. Then the strip will carry out fluttering movements ,under the influence of even slight flows of air, thereby producing a crackling noise and reflecting in varying directions very strong beams of light by which terrifying and frightening efiects are imparted on animals, particularly birds. The strip will carry out such movements even at very slight draughts and, due to its inherent stillness increased by the transverse foldings, it will produce crackling sounds of a considerable frightening eilect. In order to put to sale the devices according to my invention preferably packages are used which contain a set of devices, for instance ten or twelve, an embodiment of such a package being shown in Fig. 3.

O is a suitable bag of paper or the like the dimensions of which are in correspondence to those of the folded strips i. The bag 0 contains a set of strips which preferably have been punched or out together from sheets of metallic foil arranged above each other. In order to reinforce the package a strip ll consisting of card-board or the like is provided, the dimensions of which correspond to, those of the folded strips i. The strip II a plan view of which is shown in Fig. 2, is provided at its upper or lower surface or at both surfaces with transverse grooves I i subdividing it in a plurality of strips 1 each of which is provided with a hole 4. If desired, perforations may be used for subdividing the strip II. By bending the card-board along the grooves H the strips I may be separated from each other so that they are ready for being used in connection with the strips I in the manner described above.

I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exert details of construction shown and described for obvious modifications will occur to a person skilled in the art.
