Description

Nov. 3, 1936. OR H- 2,059,617
HAIR BRUSH Filed Aug. 5, 1955 INVENTOR Samue/ 7"ar-ch Patented Nov. 3, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Samuel Storch, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application August 3, 1935, Serial No. 34,482;
4 Claims.
My invention relates generally to hair brushes and has reference particularly to improvements in a hollow two-piece brush back wherein the body or base section is more or less standard and the top or cover sections may be interchangeable and varied as to design and color.
It is the object of this invention to provide a hollow back brush, which is constructed of a body or bottom section and a separable top or cover section and in which one of the sections fits tightly inside the other section and is provided with a flange against which the latter section seats to form a joint between the two.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a hollow back brush of this character with a comb compartment to house a comb and to yieldably hold the same from accidentally slid-- ing out.
A still further object of my invention is to construct the top or cover section in a brush back of this type of a marginal frame or bezel and to provide interchangeable panels of varying color and design inside the bezel.
I accomplish these objects by means of the embodiments of my invention, hereinafter described, set forth in the appended claims and illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a brush, showing sections of the back broken away to disclose the interior;
Figure 2 is a substantially transverse sectional view taken on lines 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a plan view of a brush back showing a cover section having a marginal frame and interposed center panel; and
Figure 4 is an enlarged sectional view on Figure 3 of a portion of the cover and bottom.
Referring to the drawing, the hair brush, shown, is of the military style and comprises a back which includes a base or bottom section 10 and a cover section II. The bottom section II] is rectangular in shape and consists of a perforated fiat under portion l2 which is turned back upon itself about its marginal edge to form a flange l3 and then upright to form the continuous side wall 14. Mounted in the perforations of the under portion l2 are the bristles l5 which project into the bottom section I0 and are held therein by a substance I6 which is flowed into the bottom and then hardened to completely embrace the bristles and hold them firmly in position. The substance after hardening is moisture proof and does not allow disintegration or loosening of the bristles when subjected to moisture.
portion of the upright wall I 4 is cut away and portions H of the material of the wall are bent inwardly and parallel to each other along opposite ends oi the cut. Mounted inside the bottom section it and projecting longitudinally thereof is a comb compartment l8 which comprises a channel strip having inwardly directed overhanging flanges i9. One end of the compartment [8 rests between the portions H and opens into the cut out. The opposite end of the compartment l8 abuts the opposite end of wall it, the entire compartment resting upon a thin layer of the substance it which is banked up against opposite sides of the compartment as illustrated in Figure 2. The inner end of the channel strip is fixed in position in the substance by means of a lug 20 struck out of the bottom of the strip and embedded in the substance. A second lug 2| is raised out of the bottom of the strip between the upright sides for the purpose of forming a stop for the end of the comb 22 when the same is placed in the compartment. The comb is frictionally held against falling out of the compartment by means of small depending teats 23 punched in the overhanging flanges Hi just inside the lug 2!.
When the assembly of a brush has been brought to this point the cover section II is applied, the cover in its simplest form comprising a top plate and a depending marginal skirt or side wall 24 which closely embraces the side wall It of the bottom section II). As illustrated in Figure 4, the side walls M are slightly convex on their outer surfaces so as to afford a better and tighter fitting between the inner and outer walls andto thus avoid accidental displacement of the top or cover. One end portion of the side wall 24 of the cover is provided with a slot or opening 25 which registers with the opening into the comb compartment I3 and gives access thereto for inserting and removing the comb.
Referring now to Figure 3 the cover in this modification comprises a marginal frame or bezel 26 having the skirt portion 27 embracing the side wall of bottom and an opening in the midportion to expose a panel plate 28 which is merely a sheet of color metal or celluloid interposed between the cover and bottom sections of the back and which is back-ed by a metal plate 29 of the same size.
It is to be noted particularly in connection with the manufacture of the present brush back that the bottom or base sections may be stocked in quantities because it is contemplated that they may be assembled with tops or covers having a great variety of color combinations and designs. Even the covers embodying bezel frames may be varied as to color and design.
Having described my invention and the manner in which the same may be used, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:-
1. In combination, a hollow brush back comprising complementary top and bottom sections, each thereof having side walls adapted to fit tightly one within the other, said sections being held together by friction and being adapted for ready engagement and disengagement, the top section comprising a frame disposed marginally thereof to form a bezel, and an interchangeable top piece disposed inside the bezel between the latter and the bottom section, whereby the said top piece may be removed by simply disengaging the said two sections.
2. A hollow brush back, as claimed in claim 1, including a reinforcing plate disposed under the said top piece.
3. A hollow brush back, as claimed in claim 1, in which one of said sections is provided with a flange against which the free end of the side wall of the other section seats, and a reinforcing plate arranged beneath the interchangeable top piece and clamped between the side wall of the bottom section and the corner of the bezel and side wall of the top section.
4. In combination, a comb, a hollow brush back comprising top and bottom sections the latter being held together by friction and being adapted for ready engagement and disengagement and a channel piece disposed in the back and alined openings disposed to the outside thereof through an opening in the said sections, said channel piece having a stop at its inner end to receive the end of the comb and comprising oppositely disposed flanges to form a slide for the comb, the flanges adjacent their inner ends having depending projections to yieldably engage the comb to hold it from slipping out of the channel piece, said comb, when inserted in said channel piece, securely locks the said two sections which cannot be separated While the comb is inserted therein.
