8 Claims.
This invention relates to door locks and is directed primarily to locks for sliding doors.
It is an object of this invention to provide a lock for sli-ding doors Aso constructed as to absorb slack or tolerance between parts thereof and to insure against sliding of the door when it has reached its finally closed position.
A further object is to provide a lock for sliding car doors capable, subsequent to its operative disposition, of permitting movement of the door to nally closed position while automatically absorbing the slack introduced by the door movement, thereby preventing back-and-forth sliding movement of the door and consequent wear and deterioration of the lock and door fixtures.
A further object is` to provide a lock for sliding car doors capable, subsequent to its operative disposition, of permitting movement of the door to finally closed position while automatically absorbing the slack introduced by the door movement, the construction of the lock enabling the elimination of the locking pin customarily employed in locks for such doors.
A `further object is to provide a lock of the character set forth in which the locking element serves as a lever operable to effect opening and closing movements of the door.
A further object is to provide a lock including a locking element and an arm which, in the operative position of the lock, cooperate to prevent unauthorized release of the locking element.
Other objects of the invention will become clear as the description thereof proceeds.

Referring to the drawings and more particularly to Figures l and 7 thereof, one form of the invention is illustrated as applied to the lpurpose which will hereinafter appear. With refdouble doors customarily employed upon each side of' an automobile railway house car. These doors, designated respectively by the numerals Il) and I I, are referred to in the art as main and auxiliary doors. These doors are shown constructed of metal. It is to be understood, however, that theinstant invention is applicable to doors of any desired construction and of any desired materials. It is pointed out, moreover, that while the invention is illustrated in its application to the double doors of an automobile'house car it is readily applicable to the single doors of the usual box car as well.
The lock of the instant embodiment of the invention comprises a fastening element I2. This element is preferably secured to the main door I0 and to this end said door has secured thereto, preferably by means of rivets, a member I3 carrying preferably as an integral formation thereon a boss I4, which extends through an' eye I5 provided adjacent one end of the fastening element I2. A washer IE vsecured upon the free end of the boss I4 as by means of a rivet Il prevents disengagement and consequent loss of the fastening element I2 Vfrom the main door. The member I3 is formed, additionally, with a hook shaped abutment I8 which, as clearly shown in Figure l of the drawings, is inclined -downwardly toward the boss Ill. The abutment I8 is provided for a erence to Figure 1 of the drawings it will be apparent that the eye I5 formed in one end of the fastening element I2 is in the nature of an elongated slot I9, one defining face 2U of which is inclined downwardly. 35
Secured to the auxiliary door I I is a lock plate member 2I. Provided on said lock plate preferably as an integral formation thereof is a hook shaped abutment 22, the hook portion of which is turned oppositely to that of the abutment I8 provided on the member I3. The abutment 22 is inclined downwardly so as to present in conjunction with the abutment I8 a pair of downwardly diverging faces 23 and 24.
The fastening element I2 is provided, preferably integral therewith, with a pair of hook shaped abutments 25 and 26. These abutments 25 and 26 are so disposed upon the fastening element I2 that in the operative position of the fastening element the abutment 25 will inter- 50 engage with the abutment I8 provided on the member I3 and the abutment 26 will interengage with the abutment 22 provided on the lock plate member 2l. The abutment 25 is inclined similar to the cooperating abutment I8 while the abut- 55 ment 26 is similarly inclined to its cooperating abutment 22. 'I'he lock member I2 is also formed with a flange 2'| provided with a slot 28 adapted to be alined with a slot 29 formed in a flange 3|) provided on the lock plate member 2|. These alined slots 28 and 29 are for the purpose of receiving a seal in the locked position of the door. A seal may readily be inserted in the slots 28 and 29 even though the lock member I2 may not be in its lowermost position.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in Figures 2 and 8 simplification has been obtained by eliminating the abutments I8 and 25. A member 3| provided with a neck portion 32 is secured to the main door I0 and is utilized to fasten a modified fastening element 33 to said door. The fastening element 33 is provided adjacent one end thereof with an elongated slot 34 forming an eye 35. The outermost defining face 36 of the slot 34 is inclined downwardly similar to the face 20 of the eye I5. The free end of the neck 32 formed on the member 3| extends through the slot 34 of the fastening element and through the door I8 as indicated at 31. At the opposite end of the fastening element 33 an abutment 38 is formed which, as clearly shown in Figure 8 of the drawings, may be dovetailed in section. The face 39 of the abutment 38 nearest the slot 34 is inclined downwardly whereby such face is related in downwardly diverging relationship with the face 36 of the member 33.
A lock plate member 40 is secured to the auxiliary door I. The lock plate member is provided with a substantially dove-tailed recess 4| which is defined in part by a hook shaped abutment 42. The abutment 42 is provided with a face 43 inclined downwardly similar to the face 39 provided on the abutment 38 formed on the fastening element 33. A flange 44 is provided on the lock plate member 40 and is adapted to lie adjacent a flange 45 formed on the fastening element 33 when the abutment 38 thereof is received in the dove-tailed recess 4| formed on the lock plate member. Alined openings 46 and 4'I formed, respectively, in the flanges 44 and 45 are adapted to receive a seal in the locking position of the fastening element 33. The formation of the openings 46 and 41 are such that a seal may be received before the fastening element 33 is in its lowermost position.
A further modified construction embodying the invention is illustrated in Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings. In the construction shown in these gures, and with the exceptions hereinafter set forth, the member I3 and lock plate 2| are utilized. The fastening member I3, in the manner set forth in the description of the structure shown in Figures 1 and 7, is adapted to support a fastening element 48 by extending the boss I4 formed on the element I3 through an elongated slot 49 formed in the fastening element 48 adjacent one end thereof. The hook shaped abutments I8 and 22 provided, respectively, on the member I3 and the lock plate member 2| are adapted to engage hook shaped abutments 50 and 5| formed on the fastening' element 48 in the manner described in connection with the structure of Figures 1 and 7. The abutments 5|) and 5| provided on the fastening element 48 are similar to the abutments 25 and 26 formed on the fastening element I2.
The fastening element 48 is extended beyond the eye formed therein and beyond the abutment 5| so as to provide an element of increased length over that shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. By means of this extension the fastening element 48 is adapted to serve as hereinafter set forth additionally as a lever by means of which initial opening and final closing movements may be imparted to the main door I0. For this purpose the end of the fastening element 48 adjacent the abutment 5| is formed into a handle portion 52 while the opposite end of the member 48 may be provided with a boss 53.
An arm 54 is mounted upon the lock plate member 2| for pivotal and vertically reciprocable movements. rI'o accomplish this mounting of the arm 54 there is provided adjacent the upper end thereof a vertically elongated slot 55 through which a boss 56 formed on the lock plate member 2| extends. A Washer 5l' disposed in overlapping relationship to the arm 54 is fastened to the lock plate member by means of a rivet 58 extending through the boss 56, thereby preventing disengagement of the arm from the lock plate member. When it is desired to impart initial opening movement or nal closing movement to the main door I8 the arm 54 may be positioned as indicated in dot and dash lines in Figure 3 of the drawings. In this position the boss 53 formed on the fastening element 48 is extended through an opening 59 formed adjacent one end of the arm 54 and upon movement of the element 48 in the desired direction final closing movement or initial opening movement will be imparted to the door I8.
The arm 54 is effective, moreover, to maintain the locking element 48 in its operative and sealed position. The association of the arm 54 and the locking element 48 when the former is effective for this purpose is clearly shown in Figures 3 and 5 of the drawings. In this association a ange 60 formed on the arm 54 rests upon the locking element 48 and a seal (not shown) may be passed through the alined openings 6I and 62 formed, respectively, in the arm 54 and in the flange 63 of the locking plate. It will be apparent that engagement between the lower end of the slot 55 provided adjacent the upper end of the arm 54 and the boss 56 formed on the locking plate will occur prior to the disengagement of the abutments formed on the locking plate, the member I3 and the locking element 48 so as to prevent disengagement of the locking element from the locking plate and the member. Moreover, this upward movement of the arm 54 by virtue of the length of the opening 62 formed in the flange 63 of the locking plate will not sever the seal. Inasmuch as the locking arm must be swung clockwise in order to obtain disengagement thereof from the locking element 48 and permit release of said element from the lock plate member 2|, means is provided whereby such swinging movement may not occur accidentally in the operative disposition of the locking element and arm. For this purpose a lug 64 is formed on the underside of the locking element 48 and a corresponding lug 65 is formed on the arm 54. When the car upon which the lock is utilized is subjected to impact so as to cause the arm 54 to move upwardly and to tend to swing clockwise as viewed in Figure 3, engagement between the lugs 64 and 65 will occur so as to prevent such swinging of the arm.
It is believed that the operation of the lock will be clear from the foregoing description. Its operation appears, moreover, from a consideration of Figures 4 and 6 of the drawings. In these figures the auxiliary door I| is represented in its fully closed position while the main door I0 `is represented to be slightly open or, in other words, not in its nal closed position. It will be apparent that even though the main door I0 is not in'its final closed position engagement between the cooperating abutments provided on the `lock platev member, the locking element and the door member I3 is had and disposition of the arm 54 and iiange 63 is such that the openings 6I and 62 provided therein are alined so that a seal may be passed through such openings. The door I Il is, therefore, capable of being locked against unauthorized opening. It will be clear, moreover, that firm engagement is obtained between the cooperating abutments I8 and 5l) and 22 and 5I so that if the door IIJ should not move to its finally closed position no play or tolerance between these abutments will be introduced to cause deterioration and wear thereon. However, should the door move during the transit of the car to its finally closed position so as to create slack or tolerance between the cooperating abutments the locking element 48 will, under the iniiuence of gravity, move downwardly and by Virtue of the cooperating downwardly diverging faces provided on said abutments the slack or tolerance will be absorbed and the possibility of play will again be prevented.
The action of the structure illustrated in Figures 1 and 7 of the drawings will be the same as that described in connection with the structure illustrated in Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, of the drawings. This same action obtains as well in the structure shown in Figures 2 and 8 of the drawings where, however, the downwardly inclined face 36 of the eye 35 cooperates with the downwardly inclined face 39 of the abutment 38 to form downwardly diverging faces which are associated with the neck 32 of the member 3l and the abutment 42 in order to take up any slack or tolerance which might occur between these parts.
Referring to the structure shown in Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, it is to be noted that the locking element 48 is properly positioned prior to the illustrated association of the arm 513 with the closing element. In order to release the closing element 48 the arm 54 is first actuated by a clockwise swinging movement out of engagement with said element.
With regard to the embodiments of the invention illustrated in Figures 1 and '7 and Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, it is to be observed that in the operative position of the locking elements clearance is provided between the boss I4 and the vertical faces of the slots I9 and 49 provided in the locking elements I2 and 133. In other words, the cooperating abutments I8 and 25 and I8 and 50 function to carry stresses incident upon the locking elements so as to entirely relieve the boss Ill from the effect of such stresses.
It will be apparent that numerous changes and modifications in the details of the invention will be clear to those skilled in the art. It is intended, therefore, that all such modifications and changes be comprehended within this invention, which is to be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.
I claim:
1. In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member, a combined operating and fastening device, downwardly diverging faces provided on said device, means secured to each of said members, an arm secured to one of said members, said fastening device being mounted upon the other of said members, the diverging faces of said device having cooperating abutments with said means to fasten said door member to said relatively stationary member, said device cooperating with said arm to impart opening and closing movement t0 said door member upon release of said device from said members.
2. In a railway house car having a relatiVGly stationary member and a sliding door member, a fastening device, a substantially vertical slot formed adjacent an end of said device, an abutment provided on said device, said abutment and one wall of said slot presenting downwardly diverging faces, an abutment provided on one of said members and means extending through said slot for securing said device to the other of said members, said faces cooperating with said-abutment provided on said member and said means in the operative position of said lock for fastening said members together so that said car may be placed in transit, said doormember being capable of movement toward said relatively stationary member during the transit of said oar and said device being movable downwardly automatically in response to said door member movement to take up the slack created by such movement.
3. In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member. a fastening device, means securing said device for substantially vertical movement to one of said members, an abutment provided on each of said members, cooperable abutments provided on said fastening device, said abutments on said device having portions arranged in downwardly diverging relationship engageable with the abutments provided on said members in the operative positlon of said fastening device, said door member belng capable of movement toward said relativelystationary member and said fastening device being capable of auto-matic downward movement Vinresponse to said movement of said door member while said fastening device is in said operative position.
4. In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member, a fastening device, means movably securing said device to one of said members, a fixed abutment provided on said device, a fixed cooperable abutment provided on the other of said members, said abutments being engageable when said fastening device is in operative position to permit locking of said door member prior to its finally closed position so that said car may be placed in transit, said .engagement of said abutments preventing opening movement of said door said abutment on said device having an engaging face inclined downwardly and away from said securing means, said door member being movable toward finally closed position while said fastening device is in locking position7 said device being movable in response to such movement of the door member to reestablish engagement between said abutments for the purpose set forth.
5. In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member, a fastening device, means movably securing said device to one of said members, said device being engageable with means secured to the other of said members for locking said door member, an arm swingably secured to the other of said members adapted to engage said fastening device to prevent disengagement thereof, said arm being cooperable with said fastening device in the released position of the latter to impart initial opening and nal closing movements to said door member.
6. In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member, a fastening device having abutments arranged in downwardly diverging relationship, means securing said device to one of said members for vertical movement in the operative position of said device, an abutment secured to each of said members, said latter abutments being arranged in downwardly diverging relationship, said abutments on said device and said members cooperating in the operative position of said device to fasten said members together, said door member being capable of movement toward said relatively stationary member and said fastening device being capable of automatic downward movement in response to said movement of said door member while said fastening device is in said operative position. r

In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member, a lever, means securing said lever to one of said members for vertical movement and for swinging movement about said means as a fulcrum, a swingably mounted arm secured to the other of said members, downwardly diverging abutments provided on said lever, downwardly diverging abutments provided on said members, said lever being capable of disposition substantially hori- Zontally to effect engagement between said abutments to fasten said members together and substantially vertically for cooperation with said arm to impart opening and closing movements to said door member.
8. In a railway house car having a relatively stationary member and a sliding door member, a lever, means securing said lever to one of said members for vertical movement and for swinging movement about said means as a fulcrum, a swingably mounted arm secured to the other of said members, downwardly diverging abutments provided on said lever, downwardly diverging abutments provided on said members, said lever being capable of disposition substantially horizontally to effect engagement between said abutments to fasten said members together and substantially vertically for cooperation with said arm to impart opening and closing movements to said door member, said arm cooperating with said lever in the fastening position thereof to prevent accidental disengagement of said lever abutments from said abutments provided on said members.
