6 Claims.
This invention relates to side-panels for typewriting machines, such as the Underwood.
The panel closes the large opening between the front and back side posts of a typewriting-machine frame. It is fitted to the front, back and bottom flanges which are usually turned inward from the side of the machine-frame. The panel has bottom prongs or tongues that seat in notches that are cut in the bottom inturned flange. The panel is inset from the side of the main frame, and at the top the panel rises within said side, or is overlapped thereby, and detachably locked thereagainst by means of pointed screws. Loosening of the screws permits withdrawal of the panel.
In one form, the panel may be slitted or perforated in a manner to form strip-like portions, to reduce its resonance and it may be lined with felt.

In Figure 4 a left-hand side frame I0 of the typewriter has a large opening II in which is tted a removable panel I2, the frame having a reinforcing interior flange I3 around all four sides of opening I I. Upon said flange are formed passage I4 for platen-carriage, and bearing I5 for the bell-shaft.
A removable side plate or panel I2 follows the contour as established by ange I3, at the bottom and the two sides of opening II. At the top said panel I2 extends up within the side i6 and is confined thereby. The panel follows this side I6, with equal overlap, across the entire opening.
The pendent side part I6 with the top flange I3, makes a box-like device that extends across the top edge of opening Il; flange I3 forming a horizontal rest for side panel I2.
For the purpose of sound-deadening, panelplate I2 is fitted with a thin plate of lead I1, which reaches diagonally across the inner surface of side panel I2, and lies flat against the panel. The lead is fastened by a strip adhesive I8.
(ci. 1er- 186) Side panel I2 has two bottom lugs I9 to seat within grooves 20, machined into the top side of flange I3, to retain the panel.
To hold the panel I2 rigid against side I6, two pointed set-screws 2l are pressed against two 5 small grooves 22 in the top edge of panel I2.
Access to the interior of the machine may be obtained in the following manner. Both setscrews, holding the top edge of the panel-plate, will be loosened, but only enough to release the 10 beveled points of set-screws from their grooved seats on top edge of the plate. The panel can now be pushed slightly towards the inside. By lifting the panel, lugs I9 on its bottom edge will rise out of their grooved seats 20. Tilting the l5 panel, with its bottom end towards the outside, will release it.
Restoring the panel demands only a reversal of the procedure. The machine does not have to be removed from its mounting. 20

Figure 5 shows a right-hand side frame, to which applies the same general description. There is the same arrangement of removable panel at this side of the machine. This side panel is solid at the bottom. 30
The right-hand panel, shown locked in Figure 5, has a round hole 23, through which projects ribbon-Winder shaft 24, having a knob 25. The hole 23 is of sufficient diameter to allow for releasing tilted side panel plate I2 over the knob 25.
Figure 3 is a Vertical section through the lefthand side piece of the machine and its side panel; the latter being closed. The beveled point of setscrew 2| bears down on the small groove-like incision 22. Lugs I9 are resting in their grooves 20. Tilting movement of the side panel is indicated by the dotted lines.
The horizontal top plate of the machine-frame shows part of a segment-bracket 26, with part of the horizontal top connection 21 between the sides of the machine.
At Figure 1 is shown another panel, which is likewise struck out of sheet-metal, and has the cutouts for platen-carriage and bearing for the bell-shaft. Bottom lugs I9 and groove-like incisions 22 are provided in this form. The Figure 1 plate has a number of punched slots 29, of any desired shape, and the plate is backed over its entire inside surface with felt or other sounddeadening material 30, Figure 2. Said slots in connection with the felt, will tend to reduce the weight of the machine.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1.` The combination with a typewriter-frame having a side and an opening in said side with continuous bottom, front and back inturned flanges, of a removable closure for said opening in the form of an inset sheet-metal panel which follows the contour of the opening as established by the bottom, front and back of the opening, and is tted thereto, said panel extending up to be conned and overlapped by said side at the top of the opening, said panel having bottom retaining lugs entered in th-e bottom ange, and releasable means for fastening the panel at its upper border against the inner face of said side of the frame.
2. The combination with a typewriter-frame having a side and an opening in said side with continuous front, back and bottom rims, of a removable closure for said opening in the form of an inset panel of sheet-material which follows the contour of said opening as established by the front, back and bottom rims, the bottom edge of the panel being entered edgewise into a recess formation provided in the bottom rim, to thereby interlock with said bottom rim, said panel extending upwardly to be confined and overlapped by said side of the frame at the top of the opening, and releasable means for fastening the panel at its upper border against the face of said side o'f the frame, said r'eleasable means including a pointed screw, at the top of said side of the frame, which forces the panel outwardly against said side of the frame.
3. The combination with a typewriter-frame having a side and an opening in said side with continuous front, back and bottom rims, of a removable closure for said opening in the form of an inset panel of sheet-material which follows the contour of said opening as established by the front, back and bottom rims, the bottom edge of the panel being entered edgewise into a recess formation provided in the bottom rim, to thereby interlock with said bottom rim, said panel extending upwardly to be confined and overlapped by said side of the frame at the top of the opening, releasable means for fastening the panel at its upper border against the face of said side of the frame, and a sound-deadening thin plate of lead reaching diagonally across the inner surface of th-e panel, and held flat against it by means of an adhesive strip.
4. The combination with a typewriter-frame having a side and an opening in said side with continuous front, back and bottom rims, of a removable closure for said opening in the form of an inset panel of sheet-material which follows the contour of said opening as established by the front, back and bottom rims, the bottom edge of the panel being entered edgewise into a recess formation provided in the bottom rim, to thereby interlock with said bottom rim, Said panel extending upwardly to be confined and overlapped by said side of the frame at the top of the opening, and releasable means for fastening the panel at its upper border against the face of said side of the frame, said panel having slots punched therein to divide it into non-resonant portions, and a facing of sound-deadening material on the inside surface of said panel.
5. The combination with a typewriter-frame having a side and an opening in said side with continuous front, back and bottom rims, of a removable closure for said opening in the form of an inset panel of sheet-material which follows the contour of said opening as established by the front, back and bottom rims, the bottom edge of the panel being entered edgewise into a recess formation provided in the bottom rim, to thereby interlock with said bottom rim, said panel extending upwardly to be confined and overlapped by said side of the frame at the top of the opening, and releasable means for fastening the panel at its upper border against the face of said side of the frame.
6. The invention as set forth in claim 5, inclusive of a muiing device, incorporated with said panel, conducive to rendering the latter inert to sound-vibrations.
