(ol. :zi- 205) This vinvention relates to separable slide fasteners for garments, coverings, containers, or the like, and particularly to devices for preventing the same from accidentally opening. separable slide fasteners areA used for closing a great variety of objects such as garments, coverings, golf bags, tobacco pouches, purses, and other containers, as well as/a great variety of other things. This type of fastener has been subject to one characteristic defect, and that is when two edges are fastened together by it, and a lateral separating pull is exerted adjacent the portion last closed, the slide is urged back over the fastener successively opening the connecting elements, thereby separating the two edges. Attempts have been made to overcome this defect by providing the slide with 'a lock designed to prevent Iaccidental movement of the slide and opening of the fastener. Such locks, however, are mechanically deficient and have not been satisfactory. Attempts to overcome the above mentioned defects have also been made by placing in the material fastened a button and button hole adjacent the opening end of the separable slide fastener to take any opening strain. Such attempts have been unsuccessful, however, for the reason that, due to the character of the material fastened, either the button hole stretches or the` button pulls out, either case resulting in the opening strain being carried by the separable slide fastener and not by'thevbutton.

Other defects in the button and button hole construction reside in the fact that the material, especially in the case of garments, is somewhat yielding. Here again the opening strain is not carried by the button and button hole, but by the separable slide fastener. A further dimculty lencountered in the use of buttons and buttonv holes or any other type of auxiliary fastener on the material being fastened is the fact that for use with separable slide fasteners the buttons and button holes or other auxiliary fasteners must be exactly aligned, an operation which requires the expenditure of considerable time and consethe additional fasteners being of the snap, hook and eye, or button and button hole type, or whatever other type may be desired. The non-resilient tapes may be made of sumcient strength to ,prevent the button holes from stretching and the button from pulling out, or whatever fasteners are usedfrom pulling loose.

An object of the invention is to vprovide a device for preventing the accidental opening of the usual separable slide fastener.

another object of the invention is to prevent opening of the usual separable slide fastener by securing to its opening end an additional fastener for taking the opening strain.

A further object of the invention is to provide the usual separable slide fastener unit with a device for preventing the accidental opening thereof, secured to the fastener tapes.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a device for preventing the accidental opening of separable slide fasteners which may be secured in opposed relation to the tapes of the fastener before its incorporation in a garment, container, or the like.

Referring particularly to Fig. 1 of the drawing, the reference character i indicates conventional trousers having a waist band 2, a waist band button 3, and a Waist band button hole li. The

linvention is shown applied to trousers because in such constructions the accidental opening of separable slide fasteners is particularly likely to occur.

Shown particularly in Fig. 4 is the separable slide fastener as commercially supplied, in the form of two fabric tapes 5 and 6, respectively, to which are .connected the interlocking metallic members 1, the latter being moved into interlock-v ing relationship by the slide 8 which on movement towards the closed end of the'fastener 9 opens the fastener, and on movement toward the opening end I0 of the fastener closes the fastener.

Secured to the tapes 5 and 6, respectively, adjacent the opening end I0 in directly opposed relation are tapes I5 and I6, the tape I5 having a button hole I`I, and the tape I6 having a button I8. The tapes I5 and I6 are secured to the tapes 5 and Ii by bar tacking, as shown at I9, and are formed preferably of substantially inelastic material. Referring again to Fig. 1, the opposed substantially inelastic tapes I5 and IB have opposed snap fastening portions 21 and 28 and are secured to the separable slide fastener tapes 5 and 6 adjacent the opening end I0. The tapes 5 and 6 are sewed to the opposed portions of the ily 29 of the trousers I. The tapes I5 and I6, as Well as being secured to the tapes 5 and 6, are also sewed at both ends of each to the fly 29, the center portion 30 of each being preferably free. The spacing of the snap fastener portions 2'I and 28 with respect to the separable slide fastener members 'I should be such that any strain tending to separate the members 'I will be taken by the snap fastener and its tapes I5 and I6. This relation is determined by the'position of the tapes I5 and I 6 on the tapes 5 and 6.

Fig. 2 discloses a portion of the trousers which have a Waist band 2 and the separable slide fastener tape 5 secured thereto. This gure illustrates an embodiment of the invention wherein the tape I5 is secured to the tape 5 as in Fig. 1, but to the trousers I at its inner end only by stitching 35. The opposite or outer end is free in order to facilitate the fastening and unfastening of the additional fastener, in this oase being a snap comprised by the portions 2'I and 28.

In Fig. 3, is illustrated another embodiment of the invention similar to those already described with the exception that the tapes I5 and I6 have secured thereto hook and eye fasteners 36 and 3'I. The hook and eye fasteners may be of any conventional type. As shown, the eye comprises a closed loop, and the hook comprises a pin 38 mounted on a body, the pin having an overextending disc mounted on the outer end thereof. y

It is intended that the tapes I5 and I6 be secured to the separable slide fastener tapes 5 and 6 before the incorporation of the separable slide fastener in the garment or other construction in which it is to be used, and that the separable slide fastener units such as shown in Fig. 4 be delivered to the consumer with the tapes I5 and IB attached, together with the type of fastener employed. It 5 of course to be understood that theunit of Fig. 4 may be provided with any of the additional fasteners shown, such as the snap or the hook and eye in place of the button and button hole, or with any other suitable type of fastener.

It will be obvious from inspection of Figs. 1 and 3 that no time is consumed in aligning the tapes I5 and I6 and their fastener on directly opposite sides of the fly 29, for the alignment is taken care of readily without appreciable loss of time when the tapes 5 and 6 are separated from the garment, and may be readily placed side by side. The strength of the tapes I5 and I6 may be varied according to the requirements of the construction to which the separable slide fastener is secured by doubling or tripling, etc., them. As the tapes I5 and I6 are substantially non-elastic, they do not extend and therefore the additional fasteners secured to them remain in their same positions relative to the members 'I instead of varying as occurs when the fastener is secured directly to the material fastened.

The aligning feature of the present invention, that is, the securing of the tapes I5 and I6 to the tapes 5 and 6 in directly opposed relation is of particular importance for the reason that if the additional fastener on the tapes I5 and I 6 is secured directly to the garment, and the opposed portions thereof are slightly out of alignment, the separable slide fastener will not completely close, resulting not only in an unclosed portion, but also in an unsightly bulge caused by the members 1 along the connecting edge. In the present invention where the two separable slide fastener tapes may be disposed adjacent each other with the members I interlocked, the alignment of the additional fasteners is a simple matter. Furthermore, the making of button holes and securing of buttons to fabric of the structure being supplied with the separable slide fastener involves the use of a considerable amount of manual labor and time in securing the proper alignment both longitudinally and laterally of the edges being fastened, whereas according to the present invention the additional tapes may be not only provided with their additional fasteners and secured to the separable slide fastener tapes by machine, but they may also be secured to the structure in which the separable slide fastener is provided, by machine. The net result is that a cheaper and more satisfactory final result is obtained.

It is to be understood that while the foregoing specification describes the tapes I5 and I6 in Fig. 1, having the additional fastener comprised by the snap portions 21 and 28, secured at both ends to the trousers I, and the tape I5 with the snap portion 2I as being free at its outer end as shown in Fig. 2, the. tape I5 may be free at its outer end or sewed down at both ends, as desired, with any of the additional fasteners shown, or which may be used.

Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is:

l. The combination with a separable slide fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means successively passing over them, of a connectible means secured to each of said tapes at positions below the uppermost members but adjacent the sliding means when the members are in interlocking relation, said upper end being that end toward which said sliding means moves in successively locking the members, one of said connectable means being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other,

so that said connectable means take a portion at least of the opening strain otherwise exerted on said fastener during use tending to successively unlock said members, to prevent accidental unlocking of said members, said connectable means being in transverse alignment.

2. In a garment, covering, container, or the like, the combination with a separable slide fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a. sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means successively passing over them, of a connectable means secured to each of said verse alignment. l

3. The combination with a separable slide iastener of the character described, comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to belmoved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means successively passing over them, of tapes secured to said first named tapes in opposed relation at positions below the uppermost ends thereof, said upper end being that end toward which said sliding means moves in successively locking said members, said second named tapes being relatively in overlapping relation to some of said members, and an additional fastening means mounted on each of said second tapes, one of said additional fastening means beingvslightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said additional fastening means take al portion at least of the lateral strain normally exerted on said fastener tending to open it.

4. In a garment, covering, container, or the like, the combination with a separable slide fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be securedl to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into `interlocking relation by said sliding means succesively passing over them, of

, an opposed connectable means secured to each being relatively in overlapping relation to some of said members.

5. In a garment, covering, container, or the like, the combination with a separable slide f astener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to bemovel successively in interlocking relation by said sliding means passing successively over them, of additional tapes secured to said rst named tapes adjacent the sliding means when the members -are in interlocking relation, and an additional fastening means mounted on each of said additional tapes, one of said additional fastening means being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said additional tapes with said additional fastening means take a portion at least of the opening strain otherwise exerted on the fastener during use tending to successively unlock said members, said connectable means being relatively in overlapping relation to some of said members, said additional tapes and additional fastening means being in transverse alignment.

6. In a garment, covering, container, or the like, the combination with a separable sliding fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into interlocking position by said sliding means successivelypassing over them,

of additional tapes secured to said rst named tapes adjacent the sliding means when said members are in interlocking relation, said additional tapes being relatively in overlapping relation to some of said members, and an additional fastening means secured on each of said additional tapes, said additional tapes being also secured to said garment, covering, container, or the like, one of said `additional fastening means being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said additional fastening means take a portion at least of the opening strain otherwise exerted on said fastener tending to successively unlock said members, said additional tapes and additional fastening means being in transverse alignment.

7. In a garment, covering, container, or the like, in combination with. a separable sliding fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to lthe opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged tobe moved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means, successively passing over them, of additional tapes secured to said first named tapes adjacent the sliding means when the mernbersare in interlocking relation,rsaid additional tapes being relatively in overlapping relation to some of said members, and an additional fastening means mounted on each of said additional tapes, said additional tapes being secured to said garment, covering, container, or the like, one of said additional tapes, however, being free on one end thereof to permit the easy manipulation of the additional fastening means secured thereto, one of said additional fastening means being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said additional fastening means take a portion at least of the opening strain otherwise exerted on said fastener during use tending to successively unlock said members, said additional tapes Aand additional fastening means being in transverse alignment.

8. In combination with a separable sliding fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means successively passing over them, of tapes secured to said first named tapes in opposed relation at positions below the uppermost ends thereof and inwardly therefrom, said upper end being that end toward which said sliding means moves insuccessively locking said members, and an additional separable fastener member mounted on each of said second tapes, one oi said additional separable fastener members being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said additional separable fastener members take a portion at least of the lateral strain normally exerted on said rst named separable fastener tending to open it, said second named tapes and additional separable fastener being in transverse alignment.

9. The combination with a separable slide fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means successively passing over them, of additional tapes secured to said first named tapes at positions below the uppermost members but adjacent the sliding means when the members are in interlocking relation, said upper end being that end toward which said sliding means moves in successively locking said members, and a hook and eye fastener mounted on said additional tapes respectively, one of said hook and eye fastener members being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said additional tapes and hook and eye fastener take a portion at least of the opening strain otherwise exerted on said fastener during use tending to successively unlock said members, to prevent accidental unlocking of said members, said additional tapes and hook and eye fastener being in transverse alignment.

10. The combination with a separable slide fas- ,tener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved into interlocking relation by sliding means successively passing over them, of additional tapes secured to said first named tapes at positions below the uppermost members but adjacent the sliding means when the members are in interlocking relation, said upper end being that end towar'd which said sliding means moves in successively locking said members, and a button and button 'hole mounted on said second named tapes respectively, either said button or button hole being slightly closer the longitudinal center line of engagement of said members when interlocked, than the other, so that said second named tapes and button and button hole take a portion at least of the opening strain otherwise exerted on said fastener during use tending to successively unlock said members, to prevent accidental unlocking of said members, said additional tapes and said button and button hole being in transverse alignment.

11. The combination with a separable fastener of the character described comprising two tapes adapted to be secured to the opposite sides of an opening, said tapes bearing a sliding means and a plurality of members arranged to be moved successively into interlocking relation by said sliding means successively passing over them, of tapes secured to said rst named tapes in opposed relation at positions below the uppermost ends thereof and in relatively overlapping relation to some of said members, said upper end being that end toward which said sliding means moves in successively locking said members, and a separable snap fastener mounted on said second named tapes, one of the snap fastener members being slightly closer to the longitudinal center line of engagement of said interlocking members when interlocked, thanA the other, so that said separable snap fastener takes a portion at least of the lateral strain normally exerted on said fastener tending to open it, said additional tapes and snap fastener being in transverse alignment.
