POST AND PILE DRIVER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 20,563, dated June 15, 1858.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER HYDE, of Benicia, county of Solano, State of California, have made a new and useful Improvement on Pile or Post Driving Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description.
The nature of my improvement consists in suspending the gin or frame in which the hammer works, from the top of the frame of the machine by-universal joints as shown atAFigure lst of the accompanying drawings, so that it swings free always and will come into a vertical position, no mat-ter what may be the position of the frame or carriage on which it hangs. I also attach to the carriage a seXtant formed frame B, Figs. l-2, near the bottom of the gin, in which it plays or slides forward or backward to get its vertical position; but when it moves to the right or left to obtain that position it carries the seXtant frame with it, said frame being kept in position by bolts through the frame of. the carriage and through which the sextant slides. The tightening of those bolts keeps the gin in any position to which it may accommodate itself.
Nhat I claim as my invention and wish to secure by Letters Patent isl. The suspending of the gin from the top by any of the mechanical appliances known to accomplish that end, th-ereby enabling a post driving machine to accommodate itself to any unevenness of the ground over which it may be moving.
2. I also claim the sextant formed frame to keep the gin in position.
