IMPROVEMENT IN HAND PRINTING-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,556, dated June 15, 1858.
To all whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. HAsKINs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses for Printing, Stamping, or Embossing, which may be used either as hand or power presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operationof the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings.
A is the base, having the curved upright B, attached to which is the lever O, having a slot in the end, through which the oonneoting-rivet works, in order to accommodate the circular motion 0f the arm D D D, which carries the gutta-percha inking-roller E to a contact with the gutta-percha inking gate or plunger F, which is forced out and in the reservoirG by the cross-bar H, working into the pronged bar I, which is attached to the gate or plunger F by a nut or button over a spiral spring resting upon the adjustable top of the ink-reservoir G. The ink had upon the roller by this motion is distributed uniformly over the spring bedplate J, and in order that the ink may also be uniformly distributed over the face of the type K the spiral springs L L are attached to the roller E, which, working in slots, is forced up at every elevation of the lever O closely and equally against the face of the type K.
The plunger M, attached to the lever C, guided by the arm N through the bore O, covering a spiral spring', carries the type K down upon the object to be stamped, printed, or embossed upon.

The application of the ink-reservoir with the plunger or gate of gutt-a-pereha or its equivalent for letting down the ink, in combination with the spring bed-plate and the inking-roller, which is accommodated to the face of the type in the process of inking by means of slots in the arm and spiral springs attached to the same, substantially as described.
