Description

F. WILLIAMS CONTROL DEVICE Sept. 8, 1936.
Filed Nov. 27, 1934 M-T Qa- 'M BY 2%,, g-Ti ATTORNEYS Patented Sept. 8, 1936 CONTROL DEVICE Frederick S. Williams, New York, N. Y., 'assignor, by mesne assignments, to Vaco Products, Inc., a corporation of Delaware Application November 27, 1934, Serial No. 754,999
Claims.
The present invention relates to control devices and more particularly to a novel and improved control device for carrying out different controlling movements of different members by 5 repeated movement of a single member.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter and in part will be obvious herefrom, or may be learned by practice with the invention, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, construction, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described.
The accompanying drawing, referred to herein and constituting a part hereof, illustrates one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description, serves to explain the principles of the invention.
Of the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a typical embodiment which is illustrative of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure l and showing the parts in the same positions as in Figure 1; and
Figures 3 and 4 are similar sectional figures showing the parts in other relative positions.
The present invention has for its object the provision of a novel and improved control device particularly adapted to operate a plurality of elements in different manners. A further object of the invention is the provision of a control device by which the repeated movement of a single member will effect different control of other members. Still another object of the invention is the provision of a control device having a movable operating member adapted to position another member in either of its alternative positions.
Referring now in detail to the illustrative embodiment of the invention as shown in the accompanying drawing, the invention is shown in a form suitable for foot operation. As embodied, there is provided a frame member I0, to be rigidly secured to the flooring or some other rigid member, and comprising a C-shaped bar provided with alined apertures H and [2, in one of which is positioned a. bushing l3. A plunger I4 is mounted for reciprocation in the aperture l2 and bushing I3, and at its upper end is provided with a button [5 to be engaged by the operators foot, while a spring I6 is coiled about the plunger l4 and is compressed between the lower reach of frame I0 and a recessed sleeve I8 mounted on and bolted'to plunger l 4, serving to urge the plunger and sleeve upwardly. The lower end of plunger l4 may be apertured, as at ll, to receive a link or other control connection.
Means are also provided which may be moved to and held in either of two alternative positions by movement of the plunger 14 for the control of other associated devices or mechanisms, so constructed that these mean s may be held in either of its positions, with the plunger in its upper position. As embodied, these means comprise an arm 20 mounted on and pinned to shaft 2| journalled in a bushing 22 supported in the frame I0. At its inner end shaft 2| is integrally connected with a heart-shaped plate 24 adapted to be moved by reciprocation of plunger M.
For shifting plate 24 from one position to its other position, plate 24 is provided with two short,
spaced- apart pins 25 and 26 mounted one on either side of shaft 2|, and is also provided with a pin 21 positioned equidistant from and above pins 25 and 26. Sleeve I8 is recessed on its side adjacent to plate 24 so as to receive an oscillatable dog 29 pivotally mounted on the sleeve [8 is secured to plunger is provided with anvil faces 3| pins 25 and 26 respectively as plungface, dog 29 32 to engage bolt 30 by which l4. On its lower and er I4 is reciprocated, and is also provided with shoulders 34 and 35 to be alternately engaged by pin 21 on the return stroke of plunger l4. On its lower face, dog 29 is also provided with recesses 36 which engage with a into one or the other of ball 31 pressed upwardly the recesses to hold the dog in one or the other of two definite positions. The lower edge of the recess in sleeve I8 is bevelled to engage faces 3| and 32 to limit movement of the dog 29.
A stop 40 is mounted on the inner face of frame It! and projects into the bottom of plate cut-away recess at the 24 to limit oscillation of the plate.
operators foot, 32 engages pin downward stroke of the been shifted to its other Figure 3, pin' 21 clearing the top of the dog 29, and thereby moving arm 20 vice controlled thereby.
When the operator rel button [5, spring upper position passing dog 29 moves with it and face 26 so that on completion of the plunger, plate 24 has position as shown in depressed and the deeases his foot from the It returns plunger M to its through the position shown in Fig.4. As there shown, pin 21 engages shoulder 35 and further upward travel of the plunger l4 serves to shift dog 29 to its other position, with anvil face 3| ready to engage pin 25 on the next stroke of plunger M. In its normal position, pin 21 cooperates with the dog 29 to lock plate 24 in the position to which it has been moved.
On the next complete reciprocation of plunger H, the parts will be restored to their original position as shown in Figure 2.
Repeated movement of the plunger ll thus serves to give two positions of arm 20 and if the plunger I 4 is also directly connected to a controlled device, there are four possible alternative positions of the parts; that is, arm 20 may be in either of its positions with the plunger [4 either up or down. 7
The device as shown and described is capable of wide use in connection with the control of various mechanisms and the invention in its broader aspects is not limited to the specific mechanisms shown and described but departures may be made therefrom within the scope of the accompanying claims without departing from the principles of the invention and without sacrificing its chief advantages.
What I claim is:-
1. A control device including in combination a plunger, a dog pivoted on the plunger, an oscillatable plate carrying an arm and having two alternative positions, spaced pins on the plate to be alternately engaged by the dog on its travel in one direction for swinging the plate and a pin on the plate to engage alternate sides of the dog on the return movement of the plunger to swing the dog.
2. A control device including in combination a plunger, a dog pivoted on the plunger, an oscillatable plate carrying an arm and having two alternative positions, spaced pins on the plate to be alternately engaged by the dog on its travel in one direction for swinging the plate and a pin on the plate to engage alternate sides of the dog on the return movement of the plunger to swing the dog, said last pin also cooperating with the dog to lock the plate after return of the plunger.
3. A control device including in combination a plunger, a dog pivoted on the plunger, an oscillatable plate carrying an arm and having two alternative positions, spaced pins on the plate to be alternately engaged by the dog on its travel in one direction for swinging the plate, a pin on the plate to engage alternate sides of the dog on the return movement of the plunger to swing the dog, and means for holding the dog in either of its positions.
4. A control device including in combination a plunger, a dog pivoted on the plunger, an oscillatable plate carrying an arm and having two alternative positions, spaced pins on the plate to be alternately engaged by the dog on its travel in one direction for swinging the plate, a pin on the plate to engage alternate sides of the dog on the return movement of the plunger to swing the dog, said last pin also cooperating with the dog to lock the plate after return of the plunger and means for holding the dog in either of its positions.
5. A control device including in combination a plunger, a dog pivoted on the plunger, an oscillatable plate carrying an arm and having two alternative positions, spaced pins on the plate to be alternately engaged by the dog on its travel in one direction for swinging the plate, a pin on the plate to engage alternate sides of the dog on the return movement of the plunger to swing the dog, said last pin also cooperating with the dog to lock the plate after return of the plunger, means for holding the dog in either of its positions, and a spring for returning the plunger.
