Our invention relates to improvements in lock mechanisms for doors of bodies of automotive vehicles actuated by means of manually oper- Yated handle members, and the objects of our in- 5 vention are, first, to provide a lock mechanism having a handle operating mechanism adapted to be disengaged from the remainder of the locking mechanism to enable the handle member to be revolvably operated Without further operation of the locking mechanism; second, to provide a locking mechanism having an operating handle which is adapted to be operatively disengaged by a key operated lock mechanism from the outside of the body of the automotive vehicle so that the operating handle member may be completely revolved without operating the remainder of the locking mechanism; third, to provide a lock mechanism having an operating handle member adapted to -be manually operated by suitable means located Within the body of the vehicle and adapted to disengage the operating handle member from the rest of the locking mechanisms so that the operating handle may be completely revolved Without operating the remainder of the lock mechanism; fourth, to provide a lock mechanism for a door of a vehicle with means for disengaging the lock mechanism -lor its operating handle and at the same time locking the remaining portions of the lock mechanism against movement; fth, to provide a lock mechanism having a handle member adapted to be freely engaged relative to the rest of the lock mechanism With indexing mechanism for positioning the handle member in a plurality of indexed positions; sixth, to provide a lock mechanism for a door and having a handle adapted to freely rotate relative to the rest of the lock mechanism with a pair of resiliently actuated indexing members to insure the positioning of the handle in predetermined indexed positions When the door is operating to its fully closed position; seventh, to provide a lock mechanism for a door and having an embossed portion in its edge portion for receiving therein a cam portion of a freely rotating dog member connected with an operating handle; eighth, to provide a lock mechanism having a dog member mounted on a shaft member provided With a pair of cylindrical Washers revolvably engaging Wall portions of the housing of the lock mechanism to provide a bearing for the dog member; and ninth, to provide a lock mechanism having a fixed index member engaging a resiliently actuated and revolvably mounted dog member for operating portions of the lock mechanismto a disengaged position relative to and to permit free rotation of a revolvably mounted roll-back member.

The various parts of the lock mechanism assembly B are mounted as more fully disclosed hereinafter between the inner plate or housing I which is mounted on the inner side of the door assembly A relative to the interior of the body of the vehicle and the outer plate or housing member 2 which is mounted at the outside similar parts of the lock mechanism assembly B and thus in an interior of the door assembly A but in an outer position relative to the plate or housing member I as referred to the interior of the body of the vehicle, the inner and outer plates I and 2 forming a box like construction having the chamber 3 therein for containing the various parts of the lock mechanism.
The door assembly A as disclosed in Fig. 1 is disclosed with conventional construction generally and in which the outer wall portion or housing member 4 is provided with the flange or ledge portion 5 at the hinge portion of the door assembly A, said hinge portion of the door assembly A being located conventionally in many automotive vehicles at the forward portion of the door assemblies of the automotive vehicle, the door assembly A being further provided with the flange or ledge portion 6 which is located at the outermost swinging end of the door assembly A and thus rearwardly of the hinge portion of the door in many automotive vehicles, the flange or ledge portion being adapted to contact the flange or ledge portion 7 of the door post or frame assembly C as disclosed in Fig. 2.
The outer member ll is further formed with the iange or ledge portion 8 which is adapted to contact and engage the conventional catch member 9 which is mounted on the door post or frame assembly C by the screws I El or similar suitable means, the catch member 9 being suitably mounted in the door post or frame assembly C so that the ange or ledge portion 8 of the door assembly A will have a ledge on the door post or frame assembly C for substantially the full height of the door assembly A. The door assembly A is further provided with the inner member II which forms the inner wall portion of the door assembly A and may be suitably connected to the flange portion I2 which may be formed as an extension of the flange or ledge portion 8 and may be suitably connected to said ange portion I2 and to the flange portion I3 at the hinged end of the door assembly A as by welding or similar means. The wall portion I I will be suitably formed with the .oiset portion I4 to provide the recess I5 which is adapted to receive and contain the lock assembly B, the lock assembly being suitably retained in a transverse direction by the plate I6 which forms an inside r wall portion of the recess 5 and which may be secured by the screws I7 to the member II, the lock assembly B being retained in a horizontal plane in one direction by engagement with the flange portion Ill of the member II, and if desired, in a horizontal direction in two directions by engagement with the screws I8 and the plate member I 5 and which may extend through the plate member I 6, as disclosed in Fig. 8, and through the plates I and 2 of the lock assembly B to threadably engage the offset portion I4 of the member II, said plates I and 2 being provided with suitable openings I 8A, or if it is desired to dispense with the use of the plate I6, the screws I8 may extend through the plates I and 2 only to engage the offset portion or wall I.
It is to be noted that various means may be disclosed for mounting and securing the lock assembly B within the door assembly A and con-l ventional means is herewith disclosed, it being understood that other and suitable means such as rivets may be used in place of. the screws I8 if desired.
The oiTset portion I4 may be provided with the suitable holes or openings I9 and if the plate I6 portions 22 of the plate is used, said plate may be provided with .similar holes or openings 28 as disclosed in Fig. 8, said holes I9 and 28 being utilized for receiving the offset portions 2| of the plate I and the offset 2 of the lock assembly B to further position the lock assembly B and secure it in its mounted position in the recess I5 of the door assembly A.
The plate 2 may be provided with the flange portion 23 at one of the ends to extend adjacent the plate I and to form a closed end of the chamber 3. Also the plate 2 may be extended at its other or exposed end to provide the flange 24 which may extend across and contact the outer surface of the flange portion 25 which may be formed on the plate I, the ange portion 24 extending for substantially the full width of the lock assembly B. The flange portions 24 and 25 may be further secured together by the screw members 26 which extendv through the flange portions 24 and 25 of the plate members 2 and I.
The locking plunger 26 is provided with the curved or beveled surface 36 which is adapted to strike and engage the inclined surfaces 3| and 32 of the catch member 9 when the door assembly A is pivotally moved or slammed to its closed position as disclosed in Fig. 2 and in which the lock plunger 28 finally comes to rest in a position in engagement against the inner surface of the main lock retaining surface 33 of the catch member 9, the lockingrplunger 28 extending through theope-nings 29 of the flange portions 24 and 25 of the plate members 2 and I.
A plate 38 is provided with the arm 54 which is provided with the flange portion 55 which extends substantialiy at right angles to the main body po-rtion of the plate 36 and is normally positioned adjacent the inside surface of theange portion 25 of the plate I. The roll-back member 49 is provided with the polygonal shaped opening 56 extending therethrough, said polygonal opening 56 being disclosed as being of rectangular shape, although it may be provided with any desired number of polygonal sides, said polygonal shaped opening 56 being adapted to receive the shaft 51` therethrough, said shaft 51 having a polygonal shape suitable for being fitted within and being secured in the polygonal shaped op-ening 56 of the roll-back member 49. The shaft member 51 also extends throughA and is secured in the polygonal shaped openings 56 of the roll-l back member 49, the roll-back member 49 being provided with cylindrical portions 49A at each of its -ends and which are revolvably mounted in the holes or openings 68 which extend through the offset portions 2| and 22 of the plates I and 2, said roll-back member 49 being further provided with the cylindrical surfaces 49B which are revolvably mounted in the cylindrical recesses 63 and 64 which are respectively formed in the plate members I and 2, one of the cylindrical surfaces being interrupted by the formation of the flattened surfaces 48 but leaving sufficient cylindrical surfaces between the flattened surfaces 48, in conjunction xwith the full cylindrical surfaces 49B at the other end of the roll-back member 49 and with the cylindricalsurface 49A to form an adequate bearing in the openings or recesses 66, 63 and 64 of the plates and 2.
The roll-back member 49 is provided with the cam member 65 which is .provided with the surface 66 which normally extends adjacent the cam surface 61 of the arm 68 of the dog member 36,
:the surface 66 and 61 being normally separated bythe slight or small'space 69 as disclosed in Fig. 3 to insure that the surface 41 of the plate member 38 will always be urged by the resilient member A52 to a contactual engagement with one ofthe surfaces 48 of the roll-back member 49 and to thus position said surface 66 with clearance relative to 'said surface 61, the cam member 65 of the roll-back member 49 being provided with the curved surface 18 so positioned to provide the cam or roll back member 65 with sufficient stock or cross section to insure rigidity for the necessary strength to withstand the loads encountered in operation.
The dog member 36 may have its arm 35 provided with a lesser thickness than the remainder of the dog member 36 to provide the arm 68 with sucient thickness to provide the surface 61 with such area as to properly withstand the contactual and thrust engagement of the surface 66 of the roll-back member 49 therewith. The line 1| of the dog member 36 indicates the division line between the different thicknesses of the dog member 36.
The shaft member 51 is of sufficient length to extend through the member 12 which acts as a reinforcing member and which is suitably secured between the inner wall portions I4 of the recess I5 andthe outer wall portion of the housing member 4 of the door assembly A, said member 12 being located in abutment with the flange portion I2 and having its inner flange in abutment with the inner wall portion I4 of the recess l5 as disclosed in Fig. l, said shaft 51 together with the portion I1-further extending through the outer wall portion of the housing member 4 of the door assembly A and through the plate member 13 which is secured by the screws 14 to the wall portion of the housing member 4 of the door assembly A and is provided with suitable openings through which the key 15 may be inserted into the key lock mechanism assembly 16, as disclosed in Fig. 8, the key 15 being disclosed in a removed position from and relative to the key lock mechanism assembly which is indicated by the dotted lines 16 in Fig. 8, the plate 13 thus providing ance of the door assembly A. The shaft 51 eX- tends through the wall portions of the door assembly A and is suitably connected to the extenprovided with the handle portion 19 together with the angular shaped portion at the opposite end of the handlemember 18 to provide orna mental characteristics for the handle member 18, said handle member 18 disclosed in the full lines and substantially as mounted at the outer ends of the shafts 51 in Figs. Lfand 3, to disclose the por tions of the handle member 18 relative to the various positions of the roll-back member 49.
The extension portion 11 is secured to the shaft member 51 and is of 'sufficient length to provide a suitable space between the inner side of the handle member 18 and the outside surface of the wall portion of the housing member 4 of the door assembly A to enable the hand of the operator to grasp the handle portion 19 without interference with the housing member 4 of the door assembly A.
The resilient member 8| is provided with the coil portion 82, which is suitably anchored by the screw, stu'd or rivet 83 adjacent the inside surface of the plate member I, and is provided with the straight portion 84 adaptedv to engage the surfaces 4870i the roll-back member 49 to position and index the shaft member 51 vtogether with the the opening for the insertion of the key 15 and enhancing the appearsion portion 11 of the handle member 18 which is f handle member 18 in its plurality of indexed portions, the various indexed positions of the cam portion of the roll-back member 49 being indicated by the dotted line 65A in Fig. 5 thus i preventing the handle member 18 together with the roll-back member 49 from swinging to and fro in an unrestrained manner when the door assembly A is slammed to its closed position and during which operation the surface 41 of the plate 44 may be forced to a position of disengagement relative to the surfaces 48 of the roll-back member 49, thus insuring that the handle member 18 will always be in one of the four indexed positions at all times as viewed from the outside of the door assembly A, the resilient member 8| being further provided with the extension portion 85 which is provided with the curved end 86 which is adapted to engage the inside surface of the flange portion 25, thus causing the resilient member 8| to always exert a thrust against one of the surfaces 48 of the roll-back member 49.
The dog member 81 is provided with the polygonal shaped opening 88 which is disclosed as being of rectangular shape suitable for receiving and providing a driving means between the dog member 81 and the shaft member 89 which is suitably secured in the polygonal shaped opening 88.
The dog member 81 is further provided with the extension portion 99 which is provided with the hole 9| which is adapted to enclose a rivet and be secured by riveting, as at 92A, to the cylindrical portion 92 of the stud 93 which is slidably mounted in the boss 94 of the connecting member 95, the connecting member 95 being preferably constructed of relatively thin stock, a portion of which may be displaced to form the boss portion S79 provided with a countersunk recess for receiving the tapered head portion 96 of the stud member 93, the dog member 81, together with the stud member 9-3, being adapted to slidably move in the bore of the boss portion 94 to permit the index portions 91 of the dog member 3i to engage and disengage relative to the index grooves 98 of the index member 99 which is suitably secured to the inside surface of the plate I of the lock assembly B as by welding, soldering or similar means, the index member 99 being provided with the hole or opening 00 extending therethrough to allow the shaft member 89 to extend therethrough with operating clearance therearound.
The resilient or spring member IGI is mounted to extend around the shaft member 89 and to engage and extend between the inner surface of the plate member 2 and the inside surface of the dog member 81 to continually exert a thrust against the dog member 81 and to cause the index portions 91 of the dog member 81 to engage the index grooves 99 of the index member 99, the dog member 81 thus being adapted to slidably move against the pressure of the spring ||l| and to allow the dog member 81, together with the stud member 93 to slide in the bore of the boss portion 94 to further allow the index portions 91 of the dog member 81 to slide or move out of engagement with the index grooves 98 of the index member 99 when the shaft 89 is revolved by means of the handle member |02 having the handle portion |03, said revolvable movement of the shaft member 99 actuating the connecting member 95 as more fully disclosed hereinafter.
The shaft member 89 extends through and is suitably secured, as by a press fit in the polygonal openings 58 of a pair of the washer members 59 which are mounted in the offset portions 2| and 22 of the plates and 2, the pair of the washer members 59 being each provided with the cylindrical portion 6|, Fig. 15, which are revolvably mounted in the holes or openings 60 which extend through the offset portions 2| and 22 of the plates and 2, said washer members 59 each being further provided with the cylindrical surfaces 62 which are revolvably mounted in the cylindrical recesses 63 and 64 which are respectively formed in the plate members and 2.
The shaft 89 also extends through a suitable opening in the plate and is secured to the hub |94 of the handle member |02 by the screw or rivet |05 on the inside of the door assembly A and within the interior of the body of the vehicle.
It is also to be noted that the shaft 89 will extend through the plate 2 of the lock mechanism B and will be operatively connected with the key lock mechanism 16 which is diagrammatically indicated in 8 as this is of conventional construction and adapted to receive and be operated by the key 15 which is disclosed in a position removed from the key lock mechanism 16, the key lock mechanism 16 being suitably mount-ed in the reinforcing member 12 or is suitably supported by the wall portion of the housing member il of the door assembly A. The connecting member 95 is provided with the curved surface or recess |06 to ance relative to the roll-back member 49, the connecting member 95 being further provided with the curved surface or recess |01 to provide operating clearance around and relative to the sprjng |0| and the shaft member 89, the conmeeting member 95 being pivotally connected to the arm E3 of the dog member 36 by the rivet or screw |08 Awhich may have a head portion similar to the head portion 96 of the stud 93 for assembly in the boss portion |09 which may be formed by displacing a portion of the connecting member 95 similar to the formation of the boss portion 94.
The connecting member 95 may be provided with the rib portion ||0 which may extend substantially longitudinally thereof and be formed by displacing a portion of the metal of the connecting member 95 to reinforce the connecting member 95. It is also to be noted that the plate 38 will be provided with the offset portion which enables the upper portion of the plate member 38 to be positioned adjacent the inner side of the coils of the resilient member 52 while the lower portion of the plate member 38 is thereby positioned in slidable engagement with and adjacent the inner surface of the plate of the lock assembly B.
The lock plunger 2S is provided with the plate portion 32 at its inner end having a thickness substantially less than the thickness of its portion engaging the catch member 9, said plate portion 32 being formed by machining away a portion of the stock of the lock plunger to form the boss 33 having the slot 34 extending between said boss 33 and the plate portion 32 for receiving the arm 35 of the dog member 96 which is pivotally mo-unted on the rivet or shaft member 31 which is mounted in the boss 33 and the plate portion 92 and extends through the slot 34.
The plate 38 is secured to the plate portion 32 of the lock plunger 28 by the four rivets 39, the plate 38 being provided with the extension portion 44 having the slot 40 which slidably engages and supports the plate 38 on the rivet or stud 4| secured as by riveting. in the plate of the lock pro-vide operating clear- I assembly B, the head 42 of the rivet 4| retaining the plate 38 on the shouldered portion 43 in its slidable movement.
It is to be noted that the engagement of the rivet 4| with the slot 49 together with the upper edge surface of the plate portion 32 of the locking plunger 28, to which the plate 38 is riveted, with the plate or bracket 45, will stabilize and guide the plate 38 together with the locking plunger 28 in their slidable movement, the bracket 45 being rigidly secured as by welding or other similar or suitable means, to the inside surface of the plate I, said bracket 45 being provided with the flange portion 45 for engaging said edge portion of said plate portion 32.
The plate 38 is provided with the surface 41 which is always urged by the resilient or spring member 52 to engage one of the iattened or indexing surfaces 48 of the roll-back member 49 which is disclosed as being provided with four of said indexing surfaces 48 being provided as desired, said resilient member 52 being formed with spiral coils of rectangular cross section and with one of its ends 50 secured in the boss 5| which may be formed by displacing portions of the plate I, or if desired, a stud or similar member may be suitably anchored in the plate and to which the end 50 of the resilient `member may be secured, the other end 53 ofthe resilient member 52 being formed as an extension portion having a curved end to position the end 53 in engagement with the inner end of the plate portion 32 and retained in a transverse direction by being positioned between the side surfaces of the plate 38 and the plate I.
The dog member 81 is provided with the extension portion |33 which is provided with the surface |32 adapted to engage the flange portion 55 of the plate 38 and retain and prevent the plate 38 from being actuated in its slidable movement by its operating mechanisms when the dog member 81 has been rotated or turned to the position as disclosed in Fig. thus constituting a. lock means for preventing the actuation of the lock plunger 28, the plunger 28 together with the plate 38 being adapted for actuation by the handle |82 or the handle member |20, the actuation of the plunger 28 and the plate 38 by said handle |82 or handle member |29 revolving the dog member 81 from its position as disclosed in Fig. 5 to its position as disclosed in Fig. 4, the shaft 39 being conventionally connected with the key look mechanism 16 by lost motion mechanism, thus permitting the shaft 89 together with the mechanism connecting the shaft 89 with the key lock mechanism 16, to revolve through a partial revolution without disturbing the key 15, and to permit the dog member 81 to be partially revolved to the position disclosed in Fig. 4 where it does not engage the ilange 55 of the plate 38.
It is to be noted that the flange portion 55 of the plate 38 will slidably contact the edge surface of the dog member 81 as the plate 38 is slidably operated, said dog member 81 being retained against movement by the engagement of its index portions 91 with the grooves 98 of the xed index member 99 during the slidable operation of the plate 3B, the upper edge surface of the index member 99 being positioned with an operating clearance space relative to the ilange portion 55 of the plate 38.
The rod or link member H2 is slidably connected with the plate 38 by means of the rivet II3 slidably engaging the sides of the slot ||4 which is provided'in the' plate 38, said rivet ||3 being suitably secured in the rod member ||2 and having the head I5 for retaining the plate 38 thereon, the rod member ||2 being suitably provided with the teeth IIB or ratchet construction for engaging similar teeth or ratchet construction suitably provided on the shaft member I I1 suitably mounted in the bracket member I I8, which is secured to the inside of the door assembly A by the screws, rivets or similar fastening members H9, as disclosed in Fig. 7, the rod member ||2 extending through the bracket member |I8 and thus being adapted to be actuated by the handle member |20 connected with the shaft member ||1 to actuate the plate 38 together with the plunger 28 inwardly relative to the outermost swinging edge portion of the door assembly A to disengage the Vplunger 28 from engagement with the catch member 9, thus permitting the door assembly A to be unlocked and opened from the interior of the body of the vehicle, the bracket ||8 together with the handle |20 an-d shaft members |I1 being adapted for location at a remote position from the lock assembly B and on the inside of the door assembly A, the engagement of the rivet |I3 with the slot ||4 permitting the plate 38 to slidably move past and overrun theV rivet ||3 and the rod member I |2 to enable the mechanism of the lock assembly B to be operated by the handle member 18 or by the handle member |02 or the key Without operation of the rod member, the overrun position of the plate 38 relative to the rod member ||2 being disclosed in Fig. 4, the plate 38 being further disclosed in Fig. 7 as having been moved from its normal position, indicated by the dotted lines I2I, to the position as shown by the full lines. l
It is to be noted that the flange portion 25 ofV the plate is provided'with the opening or aperture |22 through which the cam portion 65 o'' the roll-back member 49 will extend and revolve when the roll-back member is revolvably operated by the handle member 18 and in order to maintain a closed end of the chamber 3 of the lock assembly B and to prevent the rollback member 49 from being observable when the door assembly A is in an opened position, the flange portion 24 is provided with the expanded or embossed portion |23 which is located substantially concentrically with the axis of the roll-back member 49.
It is also to be noted that the door post or frame assembly C will be located with a slight clearance space |24 between it and the edge surface of the outermost edge portion of the door assembly A which will also extend between the outer surface of the embossed surface |24 and the recess 21 which is formed in the wall portion of the door post or frame assembly A with a shape similar to the embossed portion |23, the recess 21 extending from the outersurface of the door post or frame assembly C which is engaged by the flange portion 8 to substantially the line |25 which thus leaves the portion |26 of the door post or frame assembly C for closing the rear side of the recess 21 into which extends the embossed portion |23. Y
The door assembly A is disclosed in Figs. 1 and 8 as being equipped with the felt, cardboard or similar member |21 which extends across the inside surface of the wall portion of the housing member and the plate- I6, where such a plate is used, together with the fabric or upholstery member |28 suitably secured to the cardboard member |21 and provided with the bead portion |29 and the pocket member I 30.
In operation and with the door assembly A in its normally closed and unlocked position, as disclosed in Fig. 3, the movement of the handle member 18 in a clockwise direction will rotate the rollback member 49 which will cause the cam portion 65 to engage the surface 61 of the arm 68 of the dog member 36 which will move the plate 38 together with the lock plunger 28 to the positions disclosed in Fig; 4 in which the end of the plunger 28 is withdrawn from engagement with the surface 33 of the catch member 9 to the position |3I Fig. 4, which allows the door assembly A to be pivotally moved to an open position as desired, the connecting member pivotally moving relative to the dog members 81 and 36.
When it is desired, with the door assembly A in a closed position as disclosed in Fig. 3, to lock the door assembly A, the operator may insert the key 15 in the key lock mechanism 16 and by turning the key 15, the mechanism of the key lock mechanism 16 which is operatively connected with the shaft member 89 will rotate the shaft member 89 together with the dog member 81 which will move the surface |32 of the extension portion |33 of the dog member 81 to an engaged position with and relative to the ange portion 55 of the plate 38, as disclosed in Fig. 5, and which also causes the connecting member 95 and the dog member 36 to assume the positions disclosed in Fig. 5, and in which positions the cam portion 65 of the rollback member 49 cannot engage the surface 61 of the dog member 36 and therefore the lock mechanism B cannot be operated, the operation of the handle member 18 merely rotating the roll-back member 49 which will be positioned when at rest in indexed positions due to the engagement of the at portions 84 of the spring 8| engaging the fiattened surfaces 48 of the roll-back member 49, the cam portion 65 of the roll-back member 49 being indicated in its indexed positions by the dotted lines 65A, Fig. 5. Also the dog member 81 is adapted to disconnect the outer handle 19 and its roll-back 49 from the plunger 28 by raising the talon 36 out of the path of the roll-back 49 as the dog member is operated to a locking position, as disclosed in Fig. 5, relative to the outer handle 19 and roll-back 49.
The lost motion mechanism between the lock mechanism 16 and the shaft or spindle 89 is disclosed in Figs. 25 and 26.
The lock mechanism 16 is provided with the cylinder 16A which is rotatably mounted and operated by the key lock mechanism, the cylinder 16A having a portion of its side wall cut away to form the shoulders or stops 16B for limiting the movement of the pin 89A which is mounted in the spindle 89 and adapted to turn therewith, the pin 89A allowing the spindle 89 to be rotated by the handle member |02 between the stops 16B without rotation of the key lock mechanism and at the same time allowing the key lock mechanism to be rotated without rotating the spindle 89 through a length of movement of the pins 89A between the stops 16B.
Also the dog member 81 will be in an unlocked position, as disclosed in Fig. 4, relative to said outer handle 19 and said roll-back 49, when said dog member 81 is operated to lower the talon 36 to a position where it may be engaged by the roll-back 4) to operatively connect the outer handle 19 with the plunger 28. Thus it will be noted that the plunger 28 together with the plate 38 may be retracted by the rod I I2 together with the handle member |20 operatively connected therewith, said handle member |20 being located on the inside of the door assembly l, the above mentioned lost motion mechanism between the key lock mechanism 16 and the shaft 89 permitting the dog member 81 to be revolved from its position disclosed in Fig. 5 to that disclosed in Fig. 4 without movement of the key 15.
Also if the operator is on the interior of the body with which the door assembly A is assembled, the extension portion |33 may be operated by means of the handle member |02 and the shaft member 89 to the locking position as disclosed in Fig. 5 with the results as above described relative to the operation of the key 15 and the key lock mechanism 16. It will thus be noted that with the lock assembly B in a locked position as disclosed in Fig. 5, the lock mechanism B may be unlocked from the interior of the body of the vehicle by the leverage and handle mechanism or the lock mechanism B may be unlocked from the exterior of the body of the vehicle by the key and key lock mechanism.
Also it is to be especially noted that with the door and lock mechanisms in their closed and locked positions that it will be impossible for anyone such as undesired passengers, gunmen, etc., to jump on the running board of the vehicle and by grabbing the handle 18, to operate the lock mechanism B to an unlocked position or to break the handle or other operating parts of the door and lock mechanisms because continued operation of the handle member 18 merely revolves same with no further resultant operation of the lock mechanism B, thus providing safety characteristics which protect the operator and occupants of the body of the vehicle from undesired molestation and assault.
We claim:
1. In a lock mechanism for a door of a vehicle having a door post mechanism provided with a catch member together with a recess extending partially across the surface of the door post mechanism adjacent the door, the combination of a housing having a chamber therein and provided y with a wall portion having an opening adjacent the catch member of the door post mechanism, an embossed portion on said housing and adapted to enter said recess of the door post mechanism, a guide member mounted in the chamber of said housing, a plunger member engaging said guide member and adapted to extend through said opening of said housing and engage said catch member of the door post mechanism, a plate member provided with a slot and a flange portion y together with an indexing surface adapted to engage a flattened surface of a roll-back member to position the roll-back member in an indexed position, said plate member being secured to said plunger member, a member supported in said housing and extending through said slot of said plate member to support and retain said plate member, a dog member pivotally mounted on and adapted to be actuated to operate said plate and plunger members, a dog member rotatably mounted in said housing and provided with index portions, said dog member being provided with an extension portion adapted to engage said ange portion of said plate member, a connecting member pivotally connected with said dog members, an index member rigidly mounted in said housing and provided with grooves for engaging the index portions of said second dog member, a resilient member suitably mounted to exert a continual thrust on said plunger member to maintain it in an extended position through said opening of said housing, a second resilient member continually exerting a thrust on said second dog member to cause l its index portions to engage said index members, a shaft member suitably mounted to operate said second dog member to and from its engagement with the ange portion. of said plate member, the operation of said second dog member causing said connecting member to move said first mentioned dog member to a position in which it is disconnected from a roll back member adapted for actuating said first mentioned dog member, a key lock mechanism suitably mounted and operatively connected with said shaft member, a handle member mounted on said shaft and located on the inside oi the door of the 'vehicle, a second shaft member suitably mounted, a roll-back member mounted on said second shaft member and provided with a cam portion adapted to engage and operate said first mentioned dog member to move said plate and said plunger members, said cam member of said roll-back member being adapted for movement within said embossed portion of said housing, said roll-back member being provided with a plurality of flattened surfaces adapted to be engaged by said indexing surface of said plate member, a handle member mounted on said second shaft member and positioned on the outside of the door, and a third resilient member suitably mounted and engaging said flattened surfaces of said roll-back member,
2. In a lock mechanism for a door, the com ination of a roll back member rotatably mounted, a handle operatively connected with said rollback member and located on the outside of the door, said roll-back member being provided with a plurality of index surfaces arranged around its axis, a plunger mechanism slidably mounted to move solely in a longitudinal direction and adapted to engage an index surface of said rollback member, resilient means adapted to maintain said plunger mechanism in engagement with said index surface of said roll-back member to position said roll-back member, a member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism and adapted to be engaged by said roll-back member to slidably operate said plunger mechanism against the thrust of said resilient means, a second dog member rotatably mounted and operatively connected with said rstmentioned dog member to move said first mentioned dog member out of engagement with and to permit said rollback member to be freely rotated by said handle member.
3. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a housing provided with oppositely disposed walls each provided with a cylindrical opening together with a cylindrical recess thereadjacent, said cylindrical recesses having a larger diameter than said cylindrical openings, a rollback member having a pair of cylindrical surfaces of different diameters at each of its ends and rotatably engaging said cylindrical recesses and openings of said housing, said roll-back member being provided with a plurality of index surfaces between said pair of cylindrical surfaces, a handle operatively connected with said roll-back member and located on the outside of the door, a plunger mechanism movably mounted and adapted to engage said index surfaces of said rollback member, resilient means for actuating said plunger mechanism to engage said index surfaces of said roll-back member, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism and adapted to be engaged by said roll-back member to movably operate said plunger mechanism, a second dog member rotatably mounted and operatively connected with said rst-mentioned dog member to move said first mentioned dog member out of engagement with and to permit said roll-back member to be freely rotated by said handle.
4. In a lock mechanism, the combination of an index member lixedly mounted and provided with index portions, a dog member rotatably mounted and provided with index portions adapted to engage said index portions of said index member, resilient means for maintaining said dog member in engagement with said index member, a plunger mechanism, a second dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism, a link member pivotally connected with said first mentioned and said second dog members, a key lock mechanism operatively connected with said first mentioned dog member, and a rollback member rotatably mounted and provided with a cam portion adapted to engage and operate said second dog member to operate said plunger mechanism, said second dog member being adapted to be operated by said key lock mechanism to a disengaged position relative to said roll-back member to permit said roll-back member to be freely rotated.
5. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a roll back member rotatably mounted and provided with a plurality of flattened surfaces, a plunger mechanism movably mounted and provided with a portion adapted to engage one of said plurality of flattened surfaces of said roll back member, resilient means tending to urge said portion of said plunger mechanism to engage one of said plurality of flattened surfaces of said roll back member, a dog member rotatably mounted, means operatively connecting said dog member and said plunger mechanism and provided with a dog mechanism adapted to be engaged by said roll back member, said dog member being restrained to move in a sole plane due to its pivot mounting on said plunger member together with said means for guiding said plunger in a straight line, a resilient member suitably anchored and adapted to engage one of said attened surfaces of said roll back member.
6. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a roll back member rotatably mounted, a plunger member provided with a portion at its inner end having a lesser thickness than its outer end, a plate member secured to said lesser thickness of said plunger member and provided with a portion adapted to engage said roll back member, resilient means actuating said plate member to engage said roll back member, means for guiding said plunger and said plate members in a straight line, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger member adjacent its lesser thickness and adapted to be engaged by said roll back member. and a link member pivotally connected to said dog member and means for operating said link member to move said dog member.
In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of aroll back member rotatably mounted, a punger provided with a pair of boss portio-ns having a slot therebetween, one of said boss portions being extended beyond the other, means for preventing turning of said plunger member, a .dog member pivotally mounted in said slot between said pair of boss portions and adapted to be engaged by said roll back member to move said plunger member, said dog member being restrained to move solely in one plane, a plate member suitably connected with said extended portion of said plunger member, resilient means actuating said plate member toward said roll back member, and means for operating said dog member to an inoperative position relative to said roll back member to permit free rotation of said roll back member, said means comprising a second dog member rotatively mounted.
8. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a housing. a roll back member rotatably mounted in said housing and provided with index surfaces, a plunger member movably mounted in said housing and provided with an extension portion, a plate member secured to and extending over an end of said extension portion of said plunger member, said plate member being adapted to engage said index surfaces of said roll back member, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger member and adapted to be engaged solely by said sole roll back member to move said plunger member, resilient means suitably mounted on said housing and having a portion extending between said plate and a wall portion of said housing to engage and urge said plunger together with said plate member toward said sole roll back member, and means for operating said dog member to an inoperative position relative to said sole roll back member.
9. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a roll back member provided with oppositely disposed index surfaces, a plunger mechanism movably mounted and provided with a portion adapted to engage one of said index surfaces of said roll back member, resilient means for urging said plunger mechanism toward said roll back member, a second resilient mechanism suitably anchored and engagingsaid roll back member on one of its index surfaces oppositely disposed to said index surface engaged by said portion of said plunger mechanism, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism and adapted to be engaged by said roll back member to move said plunger mechanism, and means for operating said dog member to an inoperative position relative to said roll back member.
10. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a roll back member rotatably mounted, a plunger member movably mounted above said roll back member, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger member and provided with a pair of arm portions extending substantially at right angles with one another, one of said arm portions extending below said plunger member and having a surface adapted to be engaged by said roll back member, a plate secured to said plunger member and engaging said roll back member, said plate member having a cut out portion to provide operating space for said dog member, a resilient member for urging said plate member toward said roll back member, and means for operating said dog member to an inoperative position relative to said roll back member.
11. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a roll back member rotatably mounted, a plunger mechanism movably mounted, a xed member engaging said plunger mechanism at one of its sides to guide it in its movement, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism and adapted to be engaged by said roll back member, a second dog member rotatably mounted and adapted to engage said plunger mechanism, said second dog member being adapted to be held in a non-engaged position relative to said plunger mechanism, said dog member being provided with a surface adapted to guide said plunger mechanism, in cooperation with said xed member, in its movement, resilient means opposing movement of said plunger mechanism, and a link member pivotally connected to said dog members.
12. In a lock mechanism for a door, the combination of a roll back member rotatably mounted, a plunger member movably mounted, a plate member secured to said plunger member and provided with an extension portion having a flanged endresilient means opposing movement of said plunger and plate members, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger member and adapted to be engaged by said roll back member, a second dog member rotatably mounted and provided with an extension portion adapted to engage the flanged end of the extension portion of said plate member, and a link member pivotally connected to and between said dog members to move said rst mentioned dog member out of engagement with said roll back member when said extension portion of said second dog member is engaging said flanged end of said plate member.
13. In a lock mechanism, the combination of an index member iixedly mounted and provided with index portions, a shaft member rotatably mounted, a dog member slidably mounted on said shaft member and provided with index portions adapted to engage the index portions of said index member, said dog member being adapted to be rotated by said shaft member, resilient means for maintaining said dog member in engagement with said index member, a plunger mechanism movably mounted, a roll back member rotatably mounted, a second dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism and adapted to be engaged by said roll back member, a link member pivotally connected to said second dog member, a stud member slidably mounted in said link member and connected with said rst mentioned dog member, a resilient means opposing movement of said plunger mechanism, and a key lock mechanism operatively connected with said shaft member and adapted to operate said rst mentioned dog member and said link member to move said second dog member to an inoperative position relative to said roll back member.

In a lock mechanism, the combination of an index member xedly mounted and provided with index p-ortions, a dog member rotatably mounted and provided with index portions adapted to engage said index portions of said index member, resilient means for maintaining said dog member in engagement with said index member, a shaft rotatably mounted and adapted to drive said dog member, said shaft extending through said index and said dog members, a plunger mechanism, a second dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism, a stud member mounted in said first mentioned dog member, a link member pivotally connected to said second dog member and provided with a bearing for slidably engaging said stud member, a key lock mechanism operatively connected with said shaft member, a roll back member rotatably mounted and provided with a cam portion adapted to engage and operate said second dog member to operate said plunger mechanism, said second dog member being adapted to be operated by said key lock mechanism to a disengaged position relative to said roll back member to permit said roll back member to be freely rotated, and
a handle member operatively connected with said shaft and adapted to operate said second dog member to its disengaged position relative to said roll back member, said handle member being oppositely disposed to said key lock mechanism relative to said first mentioned dog member.

In a lock mechanism, the combination of index means, a dog member slidably mounted and engaging said index means, resilient means for urging said dog member to engage said index means, a plunger mechanism, a second dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism, a resilient means opposing movement of said plunger mechanism, a roll back member rotatably mounted and located between said dog members, a link member pivotally connected to said dog members and adapted to slidably support said first mentioned dog member in its slidable movement, and a key lock mechanism operatively connected with land adapted to rotate said rst mentioned dog member to actuate said link member to move said second dog member to an inoperative position relative to said roll back member.
16, In a lock mechanism, the combination of a plunger mechanism slidably mounted and adapted for movement solely in a longitudinal direction, resilient means opposing movement of said plunger mechanism, roll back means for actuating said plunger mechanism, a link member, means for disconnecting said plunger mechanism from said roll back means to permit operation of said roll back means Without effective movement of said plunger mechanism, said last mentioned means comprising a pair of dog members pivotally mounted and pivotally connected together by said link member. One of said dog members being adapted to be engaged by said roll back means, the other of said dog members being adapted to engage said plunger mechanism.

In a lock mechanism for a door of a vehicle body provided with a catch mechanism, the combination of a plunger mechanism adapted to engage said catch mechanism, a dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism, a roll-back member adapted to engage said dog member to operate said plunger mechanism, an outside handle member connected With said rollback membena key lock mechanism on the outside oi said door, an inner handle member mountt ed in axial alignment with said key lock mechanism and connected therewith by lost motion mechanism, a second dog member adapted to be operated by said key lock mechanism, or said inner handle member, land a link member pivotaily connected between said iirst mentioned and said second dog members, said link member being adapted to positively move said first mentioned dog member at .all times when said second dog member is operated.

In a lock mechanism, the combination of an member nxedly mounted and provided with index portions, a dog member rotatably mounted and provided With index portions adapted to engage said index portions of said index member, resilient means for maintaining said dog member in engagement with said index member, a shaft rotatably mounted and adapted to rotate said dog member, said shaft extending through said index and said dog members, a plunger mechanism, a second dog member pivotally mounted on said plunger mechanism, a stud member mounted in said first mentioned dog member, a link member pivotally connected to said second dog member and provided with a bearing for slidably engaging said stud member, a key lock mechanism operatively connected with said shaft member, and a roll back member rotatably mounted and provided with a cam portion adapted to engage and operate said second f dog member to operate said plunger mechanism, said second dog member being adapted to be operated by said key lock mechanism to a disengaged position relative to said roll back member to permit said roll back member to be freely rotated.
