1 Claim.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a metal container f the friction Vclosure type, and more particularly to a container wherein a frangible sealing member is used in conjunction with the friction closure.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above-type wherein the frangible sealing member is disposed outside of the friction closure and secured to the can top by a shaping of the metal of said can top to provide a clamping means therefor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the can top is bent upwardly and thence laterally for the purpose of clamping the sealing member to the can top.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
Referring to the drawing- Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section showing the container embodying the improvements of the invention;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged partial vertical sectional view of the container showing the friction closure and frangible sealing member in place; and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View similar to Fig. 2, but showing a slightly modified form of friction closure.
The invention relates particularly to metal containers of the friction closure type having a frangible sealing member used in conjunction Y therewith. The container comprises a body portion preferably of metal having ends double seamed thereto, one of said ends being in the form'of a container top having a central opening and a vertical friction wall surrounding said opening. A friction 'closure is provided for the container, said closure being adapted to frictionally engage the vertical friction wall of the container top for closing the container. A frangible sealing member or disk is used in conjunction with the friction closure. Said disk is disposed so as to overlie said friction closure with the peripheral edge portion thereof contacting with the container top between the vertical friction wall and the double seam. The container top has a portion of the metal thereof bent upwardly and thence laterally to form a clamping member for clamping the frangible sealing disk against the face of the container top. A suitable sealing compound is used in the region of the clamping member for assuring an airtight seal for the container.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, a
such as taggers tin, paper or the like.
container embodying the invention is indicated at 4. The container is preferably of metal comprising a body portion 5 having a bottom end E double seamed thereto as indicated at "I, and a top end tl secured thereto by a double seam 9. 5 The top end B or container' top as it is usually called, has a central opening with a vertical friction wall II surrounding said opening. The vertical friction wall terminates at its lower end in an inturned strengthening bead I2. A friction l0 closure I3 is provided for the container having a depending vertical friction wall Ill which is adapted to frictionally engage the friction wall i I of the container top for closing the container. The friction closure IS is provided with an outwardly turned laterally extending hollow bead I5 at its upper end which is adapted to overlie and contact with the container top 3 adjacent the central opening therein.
A frangible sealing member or disk I6 is used gf) in conjunction with the friction closure I3 for further sealing the container. This frangible sealing disk is preferably made of aluminum, but might be made of any other frangible material,
The disk I6 is of such diameter as to be adapted to completely overlie the friction closure I3 and have the peripheral edge portion II thereof extend beyond the bead I5 on the friction closure and contact with the upper face 8a of the container top between said bead and the double seam 9 at the top of the container. The container top 8 has a portion of the metal thereof bent upwardly as indicated at I8 and thence laterally as indicated at I9 to form a clamping member 20 for clamping the peripheral edge II of the disk against the upper face 8a of the container top. A suitable sealing compound 2| is placed beneath the sealing disk and adjacent the clamping member 20 for producing an airtight seal for the container.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, a slightly modified form of container embodying the invention is shown. The r vertical friction wall at the lower end thereof is 4" turned outwardly into a bead I2a and a modified form of friction closure I3 is employed. Th'e portion of the metal at the lower end of the depending friction wall Ill of the closure extends inwardly, upwardly and thence outwardly, form- 0 ing a raised flat central portion 22 which lies substantially in the plane of the top bead I5 at the upper end thereof. In this form of friction closure, additional protection is given to the francontainer is left unsealed and the container inV this Yform is thus shipped to the packer, who, after` the container is filled, closes the bottom end thereof with the usual top or bottom 6, as indicated in the drawing. Y
When it is desired to open either type of container disclosed in the invention, a knife or other sharp instrument is used to cut away the frangible disk and the friction closure may then be re- Y moved in the usual manner.
From the above it will be apparent that a co-ntainer has been devised wherein an airtight seal has been provided for a container of the friction closure type, and wherein the removal of the frangible disk used in conjunction with the friction closure would readily indicate tampering with the contents of the container.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A metal container comprising a body portion having a container top secured thereto by seamking, said container top having a central opening surrounded by a vertical friction wall, a friction closurev adapted to engage said vertical wall in the container top; said closure having a curved flange project-ing over and containing with the container top, a frangible sealing disk extending across said friction closure on the outer face thereof and having its peripheral edge contacting with the container top in the region between the friction wall and the seam, said container top between said friction wall and the seam being bent upwardly to lform a fold in the metal, and said folded portion of the metal being turned downwardly to contact with the sealing disk for clamping the same to the can top.
