Description

Aug. 25, 1936. CHERNQW 2,052,381
BRACELET OR THE LIKE Filed Oct. 29, 1935 Q0 L 1, Z
INVENTOR Michael Che/now ATTORNEYS Patented Aug. 25, 1936 UNITED STATES PANT FlCE 5 Claims.
My present invention relates to jewelry of the chain or strand type, including bracelets, necklaces, anklets, tie guards, tiaras and the like.
The invention providesan article of the above 5 type to be selectively made up as required in a retail shop from elements kept in stock, to include one or more desired emblems or symbols making up, in the most specific application, the initials or the Christian name of the wearer.
,It is a specific object to provide stock elements of low cost, devoid of delicate attachment conformations which can with facility be selectively put together by the salesgirl and without the need for tools or adhesives of any character whatlt soever, to afford a neat assemblage that is secure, yet quite limber for its intended purpose and which has the appearance of having been specially fabricated with the initials or other individual insignia of the wearer.
In the accompanying drawing, in which is shown one of various possible embodiments of the several features of the invention, 7
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a bracelet incorporating the invention,
Fig. 2 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a perspective View on a still larger scale of the rear of one of the initial links.
Referring now to the drawing, in which a go bracelet embodiment is illustratively shown, the
unit may comprise a pair of terminal chain elements l and ii made up of conventional small links or the like, with one or more intervening special larger links connected in sequence there- 35 between. The respective outer ends of the terminal chain elements have conventional coacting clasp elements ill and ll.
Links L. are illustratively shown in the drawing in the form of letters or initials, illustratively to REF. Each of these links is made up of a relatively rigid block, ordinarily of malleable metal such as gold or silver, or in the cheaper embodiment of plated brass. The characters are of an ornamental type, preferably with rectilinear 45 parallel lateral edges l2 and I3, and preferably of that type of ornamental design which affords a continuous lateral edge for at least one half the height of the character as shown.
Unitary with each of the initials or charac- 50 ters arecomplementary fastening appurtenances for connecting the same in sequence and in hinged relation. For this purpose there is preferably provided at the middle of one lateral edge, illustratively the left edge l2, a unitary eye 14, 55 which is preferably flush with the rear face of the metal block and is of thickness much less than that of the block.
At the middle of the right edge l3, the root l5 of a narrow tongue protrudes flush with the rear face of the block and said tongue is curvedover 5 into a looped hook I6 with its free end ll adjacent its anchored end. The process of stamping the malleable metal of the block near its ends to form the thin eye It and hook it, results in compacting and thus hardening the metal of the 10 hook and eye, thereby rendering the same resilient. Thus, it is seen, that in assembling the bracelet or other article, the hook it will spread open slightly as it is passed into the eye i l of the contiguous link. The hook will resiliently return to initial position and will thus resiliently maintain the elements against coming apart, as best shown in Fig. 2, without however impairing the free hinging movement of successive links. When it is desirable to make the links of metal lackingresilience, the hook it could be manually pressed to locking position after it has been passed through the eye I4 of the neighboring part.
Similarly the terminal hook l8 of the final link L will snap into the eye IQ of the terminal chain element l i at the right. The left terminal chain in is provided with a special hooked link 20 which coacts in the same relation with the eye 2! at the left of the first link L.
In use it will be seen that the various character links will conform to the wearer and by virtue of the hinged relation of said links, the hooks ll will be prevented from pressing against the wrist.
The retail purchaser will ask for or select the 5 desired sequence to make up the initials or the entire name, and the salesgirl simply interlinks them as above set forth.
The parts can as readily be disassembled and replaced by other links selectively to make up bracelets for various occasions as desired.
The invention, while shown applied to a bracelet is of course applicable to necklaces, anklets, tie guards, tiaras, watch chains and in numerous other possible relations.
It will thus be seen that there is herein described an article in which the several features of this invention are embodied, and which article in its action attains the various objects of the invention and is well suited to meet the requirements of practical use.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departingfromthe scope'thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An article of jewelry comprising terminal flexible strand members with coacting terminal clasp elements and a plurality of intervening links, hingedly and removably connected in sequence by hook and eye connections, each of said links having a unitary hook element at the middle of one lateral edge thereof and a complementary eye element at the middle of the opposite lateral edge thereof the hook element of each link being snapped into the contiguous eye element of the neighboring link.
2. An initial bracelet comprising a pair of chain elements with coacting terminal clasp elements and a succession of links removably attached in. sequence between and to said chain elements, each of said links representing a letter of the alphabet with substantially rectilinear lateral edges. each of said links having an integral hook element at the middle of one lateral edge thereof, and an integral eye element at the middle of the opposite edge thereof each hook element aflording resilient latch connection to the eye element of the contiguous link.
3. The combination set forth in claim ,2 in which each link is of relatively soft metal stock and the integral hook is compressed from said metal stock for hardening and resiliency thereof for spring latching with respect to the eye of the contiguous link.
4. A link element for selective connection in a bracelet, necklace, anklet, tie guard, watch chain or the like, comprising a unitary relatively thick metal block of malleable metal, one of said links having unitary therewith at the middle of one lateral edge thereof an eye construction, and.
having unitary therewith at the opposite lateral edge thereof a hook, said hook being compressed from the stock of said metal and thereby rendered harder and more resilient for latching with respect to the eye of a contiguous link member.
5. A link element for selective connection in a bracelet, necklace, anklet, tie guard, watch chain or the like, said link comprising an ornamental rigid block of malleable metal having attachment members unitary with the middles of the lateral edges thereof, comprising a hook at one side and an eye at the other side, each of said attaching members being compressed from the metal of the block and being flush at the rear face thereof with the rear face of the block and of thickness much less than the thickness of the block.
