5 Claims.
'This'invention-relates to a combination grind- :er and sander.
Anobject of the invention is to provide an improved grinder for grinding purposes, such 5 as sharpening tools and the like, which is combined with a sander for sanding purposes, such .as sanding wood.
Specifically, an object of the invention is to provide an improved sander wherein the sand- 10 ing plate is mounted on a rotary spindle and is largely protected by a surrounding guard which is easily and conveniently mounted upon the standard which supports the spindle. A work rest is suitably mounted on the guard so as to traverse the Working face of the sanding plate and this work rest is adjustably mounted so that its inclination with respect to the Working face may be varied.
Another object of the invention is to provide Q a sander having a guard and a work rest, the
parts of which are easily constructed and installed, enabling the application of the uard and work rest to sanders which may not previously have been equipped with such parts.
25 With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will be made manifest in the following detailed description, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims, reference is had to the accompanying drawings for an illustrative 30 embodiment of the invention, wherein:
Fig. l is a front view in elevation of the improved combined grinder and sander.
Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation of the same, taken in the direction of the arrow 2 upon Fig. 1.
35 Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the same,
taken in the direction of the arrow 3 upon Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1, parts being broken away and shown in vertical section.
:40 Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken substantially upon the line 5-5 upon Fig. 4.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate similar parts throughout, the combination grind- 45 er and sander consists of a suitable standard generally designated at It having spaced bearings II and I2 at its top. A spindle I3 is rotatable in these bearings and carries. a grooved pulley l4 enabling the spindle to be belt driven 50 on" of an electric motor or other suitable source of power. On one end of the spindle-there are spaced clamping washers l5 and it between which may be positioned a grindstone l1, these clamping washers being held in engagement with 55 the grindstone by means of a nut I8.
An approximately semi-circular guard I9 is provided which extends around the rear half of the periphery of the grindstona. This guard is angular in cross section, as shown on Fig. 4, and at its lower end it is provided with a slotted 5 radial car 26 through which a bolt or cap screw 2| extends into the standard. The slot in ear 2! permits adjustment of the guard so that it may be positioned, concentrically with respect to the grindstone ii. A work rest for the grind 10 stone is provided, as indicated at 22. This work rest is angular in side elevation, having a slotted bottom arm 23, through which a bolt or'cap screw 26 extends into the standard. The slot in the arm permits adjustment of the work rest 1 22 toward or away from the grindstone.
On the opposite end of the spindle I3 there is mounted a sanding plate 25, the working face of which may be provided by an attached layer of sandpaper 25. A guard 21 is provided which is preferably formed of a casting slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the sanding plate. This guard has bosses 28 and 29 on opposite sides thereof and at its bottom it has rearwardly extending ears 36. These ears have open ended slots 3! formed therein, this type of construction being preferable to avoid drilling holes in the ears or coring the casting. A bolt 32 extends through the standard It) and through the ears and serves to adjustably mount the guard on the standard around the sanding plate in such a manner that the working face on the sanding plate projects slightly out of the guard. A work rest 33 is provided which extends across the face of the sanding plate substantially on its diameter. This work rest has arcuately slotted ears 34 and 35 at its ends which are positioned against bosses 28 and 29. Cap screws or bolts 36 extend through the slots and into the bosses 28 and 29. By loosening these cap screws ad- 40 justment of the work rest 33 is possible so as to follow the inclination of the top surface of the work rest with respect to the working surface of the sanding plate.
As the slots in the ears 34 and 35 are substantially concentric with respectto the intersection of the plane of the top surface of the work rest and the plane of the working surface of the sanding plate, adjustment of the inclination of the work rest does not involve a movement of its inner edge toward or away from the sanding plate.
From the above described construction it will be appreciated that the improved sander is suitably protected by means of a guard which, in
turn, carries a work rest on which the work to be sanded can be conveniently positioned and forced against the rotating working surface of the sanding plate. The construction of the guard and Work rest can be easily applied to various types of sanders which may not be equipped with such parts by merely drilling a hole in the standard to receive bolt 32.
Various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a sander, a standard, aspindle rotatably mounted thereon, a sanding plate mounted on the end of the spindle, a guard largely surrounding the periphery of the sanding plate mounted upon the standard, and awork rest adjustably mounted at its ends on the sides of the guard and extending across the face of the sanding plate. I i
2., In a sander, as'tanda'rd, a spindle rotatably mounted thereon, a'sanding plate mounted upon the end,of the spindle, a guard largely encircling the periphery, of 'the sanding plate, said guard having rearwardly extending ears at its bottom fitting against the sides of the standard, means securing the ears to the standard, said guard havingbosses atits sides, a work rest extending across the face of the sanding plate, arcuately slotted ears on the endsof the work rest positioned against the bosses, and means extending through the slots in the ears for adjustably securing the work rest to the guard.
3. "In a sander, a standar'd, a spindle rotatably mounted thereon, a sanding plate mounted upon the end of thespindle, a guard largely encircling the periphery of the sanding plate, said guard spect to the intersection of the plane of the top surface of the work rest and the plane of the working surface of the sanding plate.
4. In a sander, a standard, a spindle rotatably "mountedthereon, a sanding plate mounted on the end of the spindle, a guard largely surrounding the periphery of the sanding plate mounted upon thestandard, a work rest extending across the face of the sanding plate, arcuately slotted ears on the work rest positioned against the sides of the guard, and means extending through the slots into the guard for adjustably securing the work rest to the guard.
5. In a sander, a standard, a spindle rotatably mounted thereon, a sanding plate mounted on the endof the spindle, a guard largely surrounding the periphery of the sanding plate mounted upon'the "standard, a'work rest extending across the face of the sanding plate, arcuately-slotted ears on the work rest positioned against the sides of the guard, and means extending through the slots into the guard for adjustably securing the work rest to the guard, the slots being substantially concentric with respect to the intersection of the plane of the top surface of the work rest with the plane of the Working surface of the sanding plate.
