IMPROVEMENT IN METALLIC CAPS FOR BOTTLES, JARS, 840.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,520, dated June 8, 1858.
To all whom/ it may concern-,z
Be it known that I, WVM. J. STEvENsoN, of the cit-y, county, and State of N ew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Metallic Gaps for Bottles, Jars, and other Yessels; and I do hereby declare that the followingV is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side view of the upper part of a bottle iitted with a cap constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the neck and cap.

This invention consists in a certain construetion` of metallic caps for bottles, jars, and other vessels, which affords great facility for their removal after having been cemented onto the bottles or vessels for the purpose of sealing the same hermetically.
To enable others to make and use myinvention, Iwill proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Ads a bottle having its neck somewhat enlarged at the mouth a a. B is the cap, made 'of tin-plate or other sheet metal, fitting over the mouth and neck of the bottle.
b is a gasket of india-rubber interposed be tween the mouth of the bott-le and crown of Athe cap, to form an air-tight packing.
c is a seal of plaster-of-paris or any suitable composition, iilling the space between the sides of the cap and the neck of the bottle, and serving to secure the cap in place and to protect the india-rubber gasket.
The cap B consists of a head, e, and a band, d, and in this respect is like caps heretofore used, applied to preserve7 bottles in the same manner; but it is differently constructed to avoid the necessityA of cutting away the cap, which is an operation of some difficulty when it is desired to open the bottle. The ordinary method of constructing such caps is to make the band of a strip of metal by soldering the ends together; and to make the head with a rim which laps over and is soldered to the exterior of the band; but my method of construction is as follows-viz., I make the head e with a rim, e, to lit to the interior of the band d, and make the said band long enough to permit one end to lap over the other, as shown at j" in Figs. I and 3, and solder said band to the exterior of the rim e/ of the head; but instead of making a perfect joint at the lap ofthe band I only tack the joint by a small piece of solder, as shown at i in yellow tint in Figs. I and 3, at some distance from the outercxtremityof the lap, which is merely left fitting snugly to the band. For convenience of tacking the lap of the band I have a small hole, g, made in the exterior portion, f, to receive the tack t of solder.
Ihe cap thus constructed when applied to the bottle or vessel presents the same appearance and serves the same purpose as the caps heretofore used with a gasket and seal applied in the same manner, the lap remaining close, as shown in red outline in Fig. 3; but When it is desired to remove the cap, the linger or thumb nail, or the part of a knife or other suitable instrument, is passed under the extremity of the exterior portion, f, of the lap to pull it away from the band far enough to break the tack 'i and to lay hold of it with the Iingers, as shown in black outline in Fig. 3,when the band may be ripped or peeled off the head e and seal cwithout difficulty, leaving the head e loose or free to be removed easily by inserting the point-of a knife or other instrument under one side of it.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The construction of the cap B, with the band d, tted and unitedto the exteriorl of a rim formed upon its hea d, and with a lap, f, which is left unsoldered or simply tacked, so as to be capable of being laid hold of to strip the band from the exterior of the head, substantially as described, when it .is desired to open the bottle or vessel.
