2 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and'useful improvements in dispensing containers and more particularly to improvements in dispensing containers of the sifter type.
An object of the invention is to provide a simplified dispensing container, of the above type, wherein a closure member is rotatably mounted on a neck portion, said closure member and neck portion having dispensing openings in the tops thereof, and wherein means are provided for tightly pressing the top of the closure member against the top of the neck portion when in a closed position in order to prevent the escape of the contents of the container.
A further object of the invention is to provide in a dispensing container, of the above type, a
closed neck portion which'is provided with dis pensing openings and a closure member which is rotatably mounted on the neck portion and provided with dispensing openings, the closure member being forced axially of the neck portion when turned to a closed position in order to effectually seal the container and prevent the contents from gaining access to the surface be tween the neck portion and the closure member. The above and other objects of the invention will in part be obvious and will be hereinafter more fully pointed out.

The inventionrelates generally to a sifter top dispensing container for powdered materials 0 wherein an upstanding neck portion is double seamed to the top of the container. The neck portion is in the form of an inverted cup, the closed end of which is provided with a plurality of dispensing openings. The neck portion is provided with a plurality of depressions which are of bayonet shape. A closure member, also in the form of a cup, is rotatably mounted on the neck portion. The closure member is provided with dispensing openings which are similarly spaced 50 with respect to the dispensing openings'in the neck. The closure member is also provided with inward projections which are adapted to fit in the bayonet shaped recesses in the neck. The lower angular portion of each recess or depres- 55 sion is slightly inclined so that, as that closure ing dispensing openings member is turned to a closed position, the projections thereon will engage the edges of the inclined recesses and thus impart a slight axial movement to the closure member in order to form a tight seal between the closed ends of 5 the neck portion and the closure member.
It is believed that the invention will be better understood by having reference to the accompanying drawing. The body portion iii of the container may be of any suitable shape. An end 10 member is suitably secured to the body portion H3. The end Ii is provided with a central opening which is bounded by an inwardly extending annular flange ii. A cup-shaped neck portion i3 is provided with a closed end is hav- 15 Mia and a depending cylindrical body part IE, or wall, the free edge of which is bent outwardly and double seamed to the annular flange l2, as at it. The cylindrical body part or" the neck is provided with a 20 peripheral depression ll, the upper edge 23 of which forms a circumferential shoulder, the purpose of which will hereinafter be pointed out. The body part it of the neck is provided with a plurality of spaced vertical depressions or re- 25 cesses i8 which communicate with downwardly inclined recesses 29. It will be noted that the wall portion E5 of the neck is unbroken, the recesses i8, 253 being formed therein by bending the metal.
A cap or closure member 2! is provided with a closed end 22 and 21. depending skirt portion 23. The closed end is provided with dispensing openings 2 which are similarly spaced with respect to the openings E ia in the neck portion. The 35 skirt 23 fits snugly over the cylindrical body 15 of the neck 53. The free edge of the skirt 23 is turned inwardly, as at 25, in order to extend within the circumferential recess H in the neck and to abut against the shoulder H8 in order to prevent the cap 2| from being removed from the neck. It is to be noted, however, that the closure member is capable of rotation with respect to the neck. The closure member is provided with a plurality of inward projections 26, which are similarly spaced with respect to the vertical recess 19 in the neck. After the neck is seamed to the container end H, the closure member is fitted thereover, with the projections disposed within the recesses I9 so that it may be forced down on the neck. The edge 25 is then turned inwardly to engage the shoulder 18.
The closure cap 2! is provided with a knurled portion 27 so that it may be readily turned. It will be noted that as the cap 2| is turned in a clockwise direction, the inward projections 26, which are also downwardly inclined to correspond to the inclination of the recesses 20, will bear against the upper edge 20a of the inclined recesses 20 and thus urge the closure cap 2| downwardly on the neck [3. This slight movement of the closure cap will bring the closed ends I 4, 22, of the neck [3 and closure cap 2|, respectively, into tight contact so as to prevent any of the contents of the container from escaping. Of course, this turning of the closure cap removes the dispensing openings from alignment with each other. When the closure cap is rotated in the opposite direction, the projections 26 will abut against the vertical wall I90, of the recesses l9. In this manner, a stop is provided for the closure cap so as to bring the dispensing openings I ia, 24 into alignment for discharging the contents of the container.
It will be readily appreciated that an efiicient and simplified dispensing container is herewithv provided and that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A dispensing container comprising a body, an end secured thereto, a neck portion having a closed end provided with dispensing openings and a depending wall portion seamed to the container end, the wall portion of said neck having spaced inclined recesses therein, a closure member having a closed end provided with dispensing openings similarly spaced with respect to the openings in said neck and a depending skirt overlying the wall portion of said neck and the recesses therein, the lower edge of said skirt and the wall portion of said neck immediately below said recesses being peripherally shaped to provide cooperating means for rotatably securing the closure member on the neck, and said skirt having inward projections fitting within said recesses and engaging the upper edges of said recesses when the closure member is turned to a closed position so as to force the end of the closure member into tight contact with the end of the neck whereby to prevent the escape of the contents of the container.
2. A dispensing container comprising a body, an end secured thereto, a neck portion having a closed end provided with dispensing openings and a depending wall portion seamed to said container end, the wall portion of said neck being provided with a circumferential shoulder adjacent the lower end thereof and a plurality of communicating vertical and downwardly inclined recesses disposed above said shoulder, and a closure member having a closed end provided with dispensing openings similarly spaced with respect to the openings in said neck and a depending skirt overlying the wall portion of said neck and the recesses therein, the lower edge of said skirt being turned inwardly to underlie said shoulder whereby to rotatably secure the closure member on said neck, and said skirt having inward projections which fit within said vertical recesses when the closure member is placed on the neck, said projections engaging the upper edge of the inclined recesses when said closure member is turned to a closed position so as to force the end of said closure member into tight contact with the end of said neck to prevent the escape of the contents of the container.
