1' Claim.
This invention relates to vending machines and more particularly that type of vending machine adapted to dispense slender articles.
The primary object of this invention resides in the provision of avending machine adapted'to contain a quantity of different brands of cigarettes or the like for selective delivery at the will of a purchaser.
Another object of this invention resides in the provision of a vending machine consisting of a plurality of cigarette chutes in communication Y with delivery cylinders actuated independently of Yone another by a purchaser desiring to procure the contents of a particular chute.
l A still further object of this invention resides in the provision of a vending machine consisting of a plurality of cigarette chutes communicating with delivery cylinders controlled in sets by means coacting with a handle common to each set of cylinders.
In addition to the aforesaid objects, this invention resides in the provision 'of a vending machine for slender articles, such as cigarettes, cigars and the like, consisting of article containing chutes in communication with delivery cylinders preferably disposed in sets and having common actuating means governed by coin controlling means.
Aside from the foregoing objects, this invention resides in the provision of a vending machine consisting of a plurality of article chutes communicating with sets of delivery cylinders actuated by means common to each set of cylinders and cooperating with coin controlled means associated with coin ejecting means.
Among the salient features of this invention is the provision of a selective delivery mechanism adapted to dispense a predetermined number of articles (one in this instance) upon disposing a coin in association with ejecting means therefor.
With these and other objects in View, this invention resides in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of elements to be hereinafter fully set forth in the specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and vpointed out in the appended claim and, While the disclosure depicts my present conception of this invention, the right is reserved to make such changes in construction as come within the scope of the claim.

In the present embodiment of this invention the numeral 5 designates, in general, a vending machine adapted to dispense slender articles such `as cigarettes, cigars and the like and, while this application discloses the machine as adapted to dispense the aforesaid articles,l itsutility may be extended to dispensing package or'other articles by substituting appropriate chutesv and delivery cylinders of similar construction.
This machine is preferably constructed to provide a casing 6 having an inclined chute 1 and delivery tray 8.
Secured within the casing 6 are article retaining chutes 9 which are preferably closed at their Y upper ends by a cover I0 secured to the casing by suitable locking means I I.
In the present instance the chutes 9 are arranged in sets, herein indicated by the letters A and B and are associated, at their lower ends, with sets of delivery cylinders C and D, each set of which is loosely journaled on a shaft I2 mo-unted in bearing blocks I3 and extending to the exterior of the casing where handles or knobs I4 are provided to rotate the shafts. The aforesaid delivery cylinders are provided with suitably formed pockets I5, one of which is adapted to register with the associate chute when the same is in neutral o-r non-operative position.
Secured to or otherwise formed on each delivery cylinder at its opposite ends are ratchet gears lI6, each cylinder having the teeth of its ratchet and other dogs I9 pivotably secured to the bear- 50 .ing blocks I3.
Through the instrumentality of the'shaftV I 2 and dogs I'l which engage oppositely disposed ratchet gears I6 one of the cylinders in each set is permitted to rotate in one direction 4While its companion cylinder is held againstV rotation through coaction of its ratchet gear I6 and associated dog I9, whereupon opposite rotation of the Y Yshaft I2 causes thev previously stated stationary cylinder Vto Arotate therewi'thand the previously rstated V*rotating cylinder to remain stationaryV VVthrough the engagement of its ratchet IlV and associated dogil9. This manipulation ofthe cylinders', for instance, set C permitsrselective delivery of articles from'either of chutes A dependy entrupjonthe'direction in which the shaft isrocylinderS. I e Y Associated with the diskc20 and adapted tof Vnorr'nallyrbe seatedjin one ofthe grooves 2| is a Y pivote'd locking block 22 which is held into en- Ygagrlmentfwith the disk 20 by-a spring 23 to not Y tated. Y
, secured te the shaft lzlmrany suitable Vmanner isa disk 20 having a series of grooves 2| in one of its surfaces, said grooves being approximately of the area of a coin and preferably equal in number to the pockets in Ythe Adelivery onlyflock the disk against rotationlbut to govern the rotation thereof by lodging in each groove as it aligns therewith, thus it will `be observed Y that means are provided to simultaneously lock Vthe disk 20"V and associated rotating elements,
together withrcontrolling the delivery of the ar-V Vvticles selected. Y Y
; i associate plunger is manipulated force the Extending from` theV Vaforesaid lockingr blocks 22 and disks 20 are coin'chutes 24, the lower ends ofV which are openand in communication withV thegrooves 2l in the disk 20 so as toV direct the coins beneath Vplungers 25, which are retained in Vspaced relation to the disk 20 'by springsfZI and 'provided with knobs 27 above the casing in convenientaccess of a purchaser. Y 1 Y With this assemblage of elements, vitis appar- 'y vent that, upon dropping a coin into the selected chute, it will lodgefin a recessK between the disk 20 and locking block 22, whereupon the coin between the disk'20 and locking block 22 f so as Yto dislodge the locking block from theY groove 2 I. Having completed'this ,manipulation of theY coin plunger, it Vis released and returnedV to its normal extended position by the spring 26, where-V -by the handler I4 and associated elements are freed for manipulation to procure a single selec-V tive article from one of the article retaining chutes..V Y y Y L' VPreferably beneath the Vdisk 20 is a suitable coin receiving box X which 'is Vof the vusual construe-- tion. A Y f While this application discloses adjacent. sets of chutes, delivery :cylinders and their associated elements as set forth, a greater or lesser number of units can be assembled in a casing to meetVVV the demands of the public. -Y Y Withthis invention fully set forth, itis apparent that means are provided whereby a multi- VVplicity ofYA articles of different brands canY be stored fordispensing according to the demands of Y the purchaserV and, through thesimplicity of the embodiment, fthe machine Vcan be manufactured and sold cheaply. Y
Havingthus fully described my invention'what I claim and desireto, protect'by Letters Patentis:
AVIn a vending machine of the, characterset forth the combination, of sets of articleV retaining chutes, v, aligned delivery Ycylinders having Vpockets communicating with the chutes, rratchet, gears on'oppositeendsof the cylinders, the teethY of the ratchet gears loneach cylinder being opporected dogs on the bearing blocks and engaging certain other ratchet gears of the cylinders.
