C. & G. Manufacturing Company, Inc., Providence, R. I., a corporation of Rhode Island Application April 7, 1936, Serial No. 73,085
11 claims. '(01. s3-zo) My invention relates to brooches and similar tions I2 whereby are formed pairs of similarly articles purposed to detachably carry one or more directed resilient arms I3 and I4 and I3 and I4 ornamental clips or clasps upona base. respectively. The arms I3 and I3 have integral Heretofore it has been attempted to secure the lwith their ends forwardly directed identically clip, which included an ornamental face plate formed lugs I5 and I5 respectively, each with 5 and a pivoted lever, by forming in the supporting its end edge beveled as at I6 and each provided plate one or more openings, together with nuwith a lateral cam edge Il extending from its end' merous predetermined perforations. The lever to a lateral cavityl. The arms I4 and I4' have or levers were then passed through the opening likewise forwardly directed terminal lugs 20 and 10 or openings and clamped against the back of the 2li respectively in longitudinal alignment with 10 plate, the prongs upon the tongue during the the first mentioned lugs, and having their end clamping operation passing forwardly through edges beveled as at 2|. Y the perforations. Upon extended end portions of the back plate The formation of the perforations involved I0 are the joint 22 and catch 23 of a pin tongue exact and, therefore, expensive workmanship, 24 for convenient engagement with a garment. l5 and the exposure of the lever upon the back of Detachably supported by the plate I0 are two the plate invited accidental tripping of the clips or clasps and 25. As these clips are former and resultant accidental escape of the identical in construction in the present instance,
clip. a description of one will serve for both. 2;) It is an object of this invention to overcome Each clip comprises an ornamental face plate 20 the disadvantages above adverted to. 26 of any preferred configuration or design, and
Further objects of invention are toprovide such this plate COIlStitllteS One 0 the lJWO Clamping means for attaching each clip to the supporting members of the clip. 'I'he second clamping memplate as will be facile to operate, secure, and inber of each clip consists of a at lever 28 inexpensive. cluding a forwardly inclined terminal tongue 25 With the above and other objects in view, all 29 having lateral trunnions or pivot members 30 of which will fully appear in the course of the passing loosely .through perforations 3| in verfollowing description, my invention consists in tical ears v.32 soldered or otherwise fixed to the such parts and in such combinations of parts as rear portin 0f the face Plate 0f the Clip- A flat 3o fall within the scope of the appended claims. 0I' leaf Spring 34 in the Path 0f the tongue 29 has 30 In the accompanying drawing which forms a. open end slots for the loose. reception of the part of this specification and in whichvis shown ears 32. The lever 28 is provided with attachmerely a preferred form of embodiment of my ing prongs 31. By virtue of the actuation ofthe invention, lever spring 34 by the tongue 29, the lever 28 is 35 Figures 1 and 2 are a front elevation and rear impelled into snug closed position or into open 35 elevation respectively of a brooch embodying my vposition as the lever swings past its pivotal center invention, g in opposite directions.
Figure 3, a section of the same taken on lines When assembled the clips 25 and 25 are in 3-3 of Figure 2, partly in bottom plan, closed position and the adjacent inner ends of Figure 4, a section taken on line 4-4 of Figtheir respective face plate 26 abut against each 40 ure 2,vv other forming in appearance a single symmetri- Figure 5, a front view of the supporting plate, cal ornament, while the levers 28 of the clips Figure 6, a section taken on line 6--5 of Figure bear against the front of the back plate I0. The
5, and upper and lower edges of each lever 28, as shown l5 Figure 7, a perspective view of one of the clips in Figure 7, is provided near its inner ends, transin dstended Position.- versely opposite each other, with elongated re- Similar reference characters indicate similar cesses 39 forming resultant shoulders 4I) at the parts throughout the views. ends of the latter.
y In the form of my invention herein illustrated To engage a clip with the back plate one of the a supporting or back plate I0 of thin sheet metal gripping flanges of the latter is drawn downhas equidistant from its central portion, integral Wardly into overlapping engagement with the with its vtop edge, forwardly and transversely diedge of the lever y'28 in the upper recess 39 of the rected U shaped flanges or gripping members II clip, and the plate and clip are then manually and II respectively. At each side of its central compressed towards each other which causes the portion are two downwardly directed cut out porlug -I5 or I5' with its adjacent lug 20 or 29' to enter with a degree of friction the lower recess of the lever 2&3 assisted by their respective beveled terminal edges, and the plate is locked therein by reason of the entrance or the adjacent shoulder it of the lever into the cavity it of the latch` member, of which it forms a part, after travelling over the cam edge lll. The resilience of the latch member permits this snapping engagement. l
When it is desired to disengage either clip from the back plate the' end margin o the clip to be removed is grasped by the thumb and nger of the operator and given a slight twist while the plate and second clip are being held stationary between the thumb and nger of the other hand.
The detachable character of the clips make it possible to employ my device as a brooch when the clips are mounted thereon, where the face plates form a symmetrical ornament. When, however, it is desired to use one or more clips temporarily as a clip per se upon an article of wearing apparel, such clip or clips may be detached from the back plate for that purpose with facility, and may be reengaged whenever desired with equal facility.
The back plate lil is free of predetermined or other perforations as both the face plates and the levers of the clips are wholly in iront of the back plate, and therefore there is no occasion for either the lever 28 or its prongs 3l to pass through the back plate.
The ilanges and latch members maintain the clips against the back plate, and added security is afforded by the presence of the recesses 39 in the lever 28.
