8 Claims.
'I'he present invention relating as indicated to stoves or ranges has more particular reference to novel and attractive structural features for a console type of cooking stove or cabinet, in which the burner section is placed substantially in the same plane as the top of the oven.
The general object and nature of our invention is to provide a unique and attractive construction oi reciprocally movable cover plates which, when in closed position, have the effect of completely enclosing the operating parts oi' the stove, with the result that the stove or range, when not in use, will assume the pleasing appearance oi' an article oi furniture such as a cabinet or the like. Another object oi.' this invention is to be found in the provision of means for correlating the opening and closing movements of the top cover plate and the front valve handle closure plate.
Another object is to provide means under the sliding top cover whereby in its completely closed position it shall be raised to a position flush with the contiguous oven top cover; and in its completely closed position, it will be conveniently positioned underneath the oven top.
Another object is to provide means whereby the cover plate or the valve handle enclosing plate cannot be moved to closed position unless all of the burners are completely turned ofi, thereby calling the operators attention to open valves and likewise preventing the accidental smothering of a burner flame with the coincident escape of unburned gas.
Advantages and objects additional to those discussed above shall become manifest during the iollowing description. To the accomplishment of` the foregoing and related ends, said invention then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain structure embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various structural forms in which the principle of the invention may be used:
In said annexed drawings:
Fig. l is a perspective view, with portions cut away, illustrating the cover plates and mechanism constructed according to the principle of lour invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view partially in section of the valve handle closure plate; Fig. 3 is an elevational view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an elevational View taken upon a plane normal to that of Fig. 3 and illustrating an alternative form of construction for the valve handle closure plate actuating mechanism. Fig. 5 is a perspective illustrating the improvement embodying our invention as assembled in a stove or range, and with the burner section cover plate in closed position; Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, but with the burner section cover plate in opened position; Fig. is a fragmentary longitudinal sectional view taken through Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to Fig. 1, and Figs. 5 to '1 inclusive, there is shown the top of the oven section of a stove or range, which is indicated generally by the numeral I. 'I'he open burner section, generally referred to by the numeral I-', is positioned to the lei't and substantially in the same plane as that of the top of the oven section. A trackway consisting of the horizontal channels 2 and 3 is positioned across the top of the stove and serves as a means for slidably supporting the burner section cover 4. The cover 4 1 has a pair oi' reverscly bent lateral flanges 5 and 6 which are adapted to ride upon the tracks 2 and 3. A suitable handle 1 may be provided on the left hand edge of the cover 4 in order'to facilitate its manipulation.
When the burner section cover 4 is open it will assume a position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, and as shown in Fig. 6. A second oven top cover 40 is placed above the oven top I and provides a space for the reception oi' the horizontal movable cover 4 when in open position.
When the cover 4 is moved to completely closed position, the beveled lugs 8 and 9 will bear against the flange I Il resulting in an elevation of the cover 4. Similar vertically extending lugs or fingers II and I2 positioned upon the ends of the trackways 2 and 3 respectively, likewise serve to impart a final raising or elevating movement to the burner cover 4. It will thus be seen that the above described mechanism permits the burner cover 4 to drop to a plane lower than the oven top cover and to be slid out of view under the oven top cover when in open position, and to be raised to a plane iiush with the oven top cover when in closed position, as best shown in Figs. 5 and '7.
Now directing mention to Figs. 2 and 3, for 4 the purpose of enclosing the valve operating handles I3, there has been provided the hori- `zontal movable closure plate or panel I4. The closure plate I4 is Supported in its horizontal movement by means of a pair o'f horizontal arms 5 The pate u has in its face, a
plurality of openings I l .which are adapted to register with the valve handles I I when the latter are inclosed position.
In order to actuate the closure plate Il in its reciprocal horizontal movement, there is provided the lever bar which is pivotally secured at the points Il and 22 to the bosses 23 and 24 respectively which are in turn mounted upon the stove frame. The offset portion 2l of the lever bar 2l engages with slots at the end of the inwardly extending lugs II and`21 secured to' the inner'L im of the cover I4.
Returning to Pig. 1, the upper end 2l of the lever bar It is engaged by an opening in the end ot the rocker arm II. The rocker arm 2.! is pivoted at the point lll and has one end slightly cin'ved as shown at Il. A vertical ilangegn on the rocker arm 2l is adapted to be engaged by a slot I8 in the flange Il of the burner cover 4. A tension spring l. attached to the end of the rocker arm Il tends'to hold thevmoving Darts against vibration and to insure positive movement of the actuating levers.
It will thus be seen that by means of the last described mechanism the valve handle closure plate Il will be automatically opened and closed upon opening and closing movement of the burner cover 4. It should be further noted that when the cover I and the handle cover Il are in open position, and amv one oi the valve handles Il are not in closed position, as represented by the dotted lines in Fig. 4, they will not register with the openings il, therefore rendering impossible the closing ofthe respective covers.
When it is folmd desirable to operate the valve handle closure plate Il independently oi' the burner cover l, there may be provided the actuating mechanism illustrated in Fig: 4. In this latter alternative form of construction the lever bar 20 is extended above the top plane of the burner vgrate 34 with an operating handle I! on its end. It will thus be seen that movement of yaient of such stated means be employed.
We therefore particularly point out and distinctly claim as our invention:
