1 Claim.

This invention relates to improvements in draw- 7 mg devices, and more particularly to an instructive and entertaining drawing device for children.

- The primary object of the present invention is to provide adrawing device including a chart superimposed upon a sheet of drawing paper and arranged so that certain predetermined points may be readily located on the chart, according to instructions or a code furnished, which located points are caused to be marked or transferred upon the paper below the chart, whereupon,

after the location of all of the points according to the code or instructions and the marking of the same on the inner sheet, said marks may be connected by lines to delineate a figure or pictorial representation.

A'further object of the invention is to provide a drawing device which can be used indefinitely without destroying'the superimposed chart and variety in the representations delineated is effected by variety in the various codes or instructions for plotting the desired points.

A further object of thejinvention is to provide an improved drawing device which can be furnished to the user complete with an inner tablet of drawing paper and a variety of codes, or which can have the chart portion delineated in newspapers or magazines so that points can be plotted thereon for transfer onto paper according to code instructions printed in the paper or announced 7 over the radio.

A further object of the invention is to provide a drawing device which is very simple and pensive to manufacture, which provides a inexnovel vice, and its parts and combinations as set in the claim, and all equivalents thereof.

Referring now more particularly to thedraw ing and to the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, it will appear that the improved drawing device is preferably arranged in book' form and comprises a cover formed as a chart 8, a back or rear member 9 connected with the cover, and a pad of paper it interposed'between the cover and the back. The cover is arranged to fold on a fold or score line H, and the pad I!) is bound within the cover and back by any suitable means such as staples 2.

'The cover or chart 8 has formed therein a plurality of small perforations or apertures l3 arranged in spaced relation in both horizontal and vertical rows. Each vertical row is designated by a different letter, and each horizontal row'is designated by a different numeral, the'letter designations being consecutive according to their order in the alphabet, and the numeral designations also being in sequence.

It is intended that codes or instructions be furnished with the device whereby the points for illustrations may be plotted. Within the scope of the invention these codes or instructions may be imparted to the user by any of a number of means. For instance a printed code book or various code slips may be initially furnished with the device, or code instructions for the plotting of illustrations may be printed in publications or periodicals from time to time, or such instructions may be broadcast over the radio.

As a specific illustration code instructions for the plotting and drawing of a rabbit would run as follows:

The user receiving or following these code instructions applies the same as follows: For the designation 024 the twenty-fourth aperture in the vertical row on the cover chart is located and the sharp point of a pencil is inserted into said perforation so that a dot or mark is made thereby on the top sheet of the drawing pad it) below the cover. The other designations are similarly located and marked on the inner pad and whenever the code instructions state DRAW, the cover chart is opened up, as in Fig. 2, and a line is then drawn through the plotted marks. After this has been done the cover is turned back and the procedure just de scribed is again followed. After the instructions of the entire code have been complied with it will be found that a complete illustration has been drawn on the top sheet of the pad, as indicated by the numeral M in Fig. 2.

Figs. 4 and 5 illustrate an alternative form of the invention wherein the cover chart 8 is ruled into a plurality of squares l 5 by spaced apart intersecting vertical lines it and horizontal lines IT. The vertical lines i6 bear successive alphabetical designations while the horizontal lines bear successive numerical designations. To plot a point given by a code instruction the intersection of the designated lines is located. For instance the point C would be located by the intersection of the vertical C line with the twenty-fifth horizontal line. To chart the point thus located a pencil point is pressed on the intersection of said lines and the same procedure is followed as to all of the code instructions. If the pencil is pressed on the line intersections sufficiently hard it will cause impressions to be made on the top sheet of the pad it. These impressions may then be connected by lines to draw the figure or illustration. However, to simplify the procedure a sheet of carbon paper i8 may be interposed between the cover chart 8' and the top sheet of the pad ID so that actual marks will be delineated on the. pad when the code points are charted.

A further modification of the invention is illustrated in Fig. 6 wherein a chart 8 has delineated thereon vertical and horizontal rows of uniformly spaced dots l9. The vertical rows of dots bear successive alphabetical designations and the horizontal rows of dots bear successive numerical designations. Various points indicated by the code instructions are plotted or marked in the manner previously described, and if desired lines may be drawn to connect said plotted points directly on the face of the chart 8". This form of chart is especially suited for being printed or reproduced in a newspaper or periodical. As an alternative to drawing connecting lines directly on said chart 8", a sheet of paper may be secured below the chart, and the plotted points may be impressed on said sheet of paper in any of the ways previously described. Also, if desired, perforations may be formed in lieu of the dots l9 so that a pencil point may be inserted therethrough to mark directly on a sheet of paper below the chart.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that the improved drawing device is entertaining and instructive and there are no limits as to the drawings susceptible of being produced thereby. The device is furthermore, simple, inexpensive and novel, and is well adapted for the purposes set forth.

What is claimed as the invention is:

A drawing book, comprising a permanent cover chart member susceptible of indefinite re-use in its original condition, for the plotting of predetermined selected points for the attainment of a variety of dissimilar illustration outlines, said cover chart member being formed with uniformly spaced vertical rows of perforations therein with different indicia representations for the various rows, and a removable and replaceable drawing sheet secured immediately adjacent the inner face of said cover chart to receive directly on its surface separated delineations imparted by means of a marking instrument inserted through selected perforations of the cover chart, said drawing sheet being susceptible of receiving marks on its surface to connect the delineations.
