(0]. 112-16) The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sewing machine, and more particularly to a sewing machine of the type wherein the stitch forming devices and the work supporting and feeding devices are located exteriorly of a supporting housing and operated from a, main shaft extending through the housing. The invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with a sewing machine having feed wheels for supporting and feeding the fabric and com- I monly known as a cup feed machine.
An object of the invention is to provide a sewing machine wherein the stitch forming devices are arranged exteriorly of a closed housing" no fear of the oil escaping from the closed hous ing and contacting with the fabric sections being stitched.
A further object of the invention is to provide a sewing machine of the above type wherein the supporting members for the stitch forming devices are confined to movements either lengthwise of the axes of the supporting members or rotating movements about said axes so that an oil tight joint may be formed between each supporting member and the housing to prevent the escape of oil through the openings in which the members supporting the stitch forming devices operate.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the cup feed type wherein the feed cups are supported exteriorly of a closed housing and wherein the stitch forming devices are carried by members extending through the wall of the housing and wherein all of said members are confined to movements lengthwise of the axes of the members or rotating movements about said axes.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the stitch forming devices include a needle carried by a needle bar extending through the wall of the housing and located in a lineat right angles to the wall and the plane of the fabric sections being stitched, and wherein the other stitch forming devices are carried by members extending through said wall in a line at an inclination thereto and to the plane of the fabric being stitched so that said members may be confined to movements lengthwise of the axes thereof and rotating movements about said axes in cooperating with the needle in the forming of overedge stitches.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a cup feed machine of the above type with a 5. stitching mechanism which includes a needle carried by aneedle bar reciprocating in a line at right angles to the plane of the fabric sections, a thread carrying looper mounted on an axis in-' clining upwardly from the stitching point so that 10 said looper may be oscillated about its axis into and out of the needle loop and moved laterally from one side of the fabric sections to the other by a movement of the looper endwise of its axis and wherein a spreader mounted for oscillation 15 about an axis inclining upwardly from the stitching point cooperates with said looper and said needle.
These and other objects will in part be obvious and will in part be hereinafter more fully dis- 2o closed.

The invention is directed to a sewing machine having a closed housing through which the main actuating shaft extends. Located exteriorly of the housing and carried thereby is a means for supporting and feeding the fabric sections. In the present illustrated form of the invention this means includes feed wheels or feed cups rotating about vertical axes and which clamp therebetween fabric sections which are to be stitched. The closed housing has a. laterally projecting portion and the feed wheels are attached to the lower ends of operating shafts carried by this overhanging portion of the housing. Within the projecting portion of the housing is the actuating means for the shafts carried by the feed cups or feed wheels. The axes of the feed wheels are located in a vertical plane cutting a vertical plane containing the path of the needle at an acute angle. The needle is carried by a needle bar which extends through the front wall of the closed housing and while it reciprocates throughthe wall it moves in a right line and has an oil tight connection with said front wall. The actuating means for the needle bar is located wholly within said closed housing. The stitch forming mechanism as illustrated includes a thread carrying looper mounted on a looper support which oscillates about a fixed axis and is movable endwise of the axis. This looper support extends through the front wall of the housing and while it is free to reciprocate and rotate it has an oil tight connection with the front wall of the housing. Said looper support is given its movement by actuating devices located wholly within the housing. In
vthe illustrated stitch forming mechanism there is a spreader which cooperates with the looperand the needle and spreads the looper thread loop for the needle to enter. This spreader is mounted on a supporting bar which oscillates about a. fixed axis. The bar extends through the front wall of the housing and while it is free to rotate therein it has an oil tight connection with said front wall. The actuating means for the spreader bar is located within the closed housing.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the present illustrated embodiment of the invention includes a housing or closed casing l having a supporting base or bed 2, and an overhanging laterally projecting portion 3.
The feed wheel 6 is carried by a shaft 5, mounted for rotation in a sleeve bushing 5 which is attached to the housing of the machine. There is a clutch drum 6 at the upper end of this shaft which is intermittently turned by means of a link I attached to an arm it carried by a sleeve on the shaft 9., The sleeve also carries an arm It provided with a'stud M. An eccentric strap 52 is attached to said stud and cooperates with an eccentric on the main shaft l3. The main shaft I3 is mounted for rotation in bushings id, id carried by the housing l, and on the ends of the shaft are belt wheels by which the shaft may be driven. As the main shaft rotates, it will oscillate the sleeve, and this will, through the link i, impart step by step rotating movements to the drum 8 and through the drum to the shaft carrying the feed wheel 4. The link 5 is connected to a stud l5 which is adjustable in a slot in the arm 8 for varying the extent of movement imparted to the feed drum. The outer feed wheel H5 is carried by the shaft El and mounted in a sleeve bushing It. The sleeve bushingfld is carried by a bracket I9 which is mounted on a shaft 28. The shaft I1 is provided with a head at the upper end thereof which rests on the bushing l8. Directly above the shaft H is a short shaft 2i. Between the shaft 2| and the shaft H is a universal connection 32 'ing l.
which may be of any desired type. The shaft 26 carries a gear wheel 23 which meshes with a gear wheel 24, so that the rotations imparted to the feed wheel 4 are through these gear wheels imparted to tire feed wheel 86. The feed wheel l6 may be moved toward and from the feed wheel t by shifting the bracket B9. The bracket it is provided with an upwardly projecting arm i9. The overhanging portion 3 of the closed housing is provided with a laterally projecting arm 3 Mounted in this arm 3 is an abutment member 3 which is located directly over the arm IS. A spring 25 housed within the abutment and bearing on the arm I9 normally presses the feed wheel I6 yieldingly against the fabric and clamps the fabric between the feed wheels. The inward movement of the feed wheel I6 is limited by a bolt 26 which extends through a forked lug at the end of the arm l9 and through a lug 2? carried by the abutment 3*. A nut 28 threaded onto the upper end of the bolt together with the head of the bolt limits the extent of separation between the arm l5 and the abutment 3 caused by said spring. The manually operated lever 29 (see Fig. 2), has a loose connection with the shaft 20. Said lever carries a sleeve 30 which encircles the shaft, and said sleeve is provided with a lug 3! adapted to engage a notch in a sleeve 32 fixed to the shaft. The notch is of greater length than the lug so that there is a slight lost motion. The
downward movement of the lever 29 is limited by a stop 33 and a spring 34 lifts the lever. This permits a limited movement in the outer feed wheel due to the passing of cross seams or the like.
The stitch forming mechanism as illustrated consists of a needle 35 carried by a needle bar 35 which is mounted for reciprocation in a bushing 31 fixed in a projecting boss carried by the hous- The needle bar 36 reciprocates in a horizontal line, and the needle enters the fabric substantially at the line where the fabric is gripped by the feed wheels. The needle bar extends over the inner feed wheel d and alongside of the bushing 5 which supports said feed wheel 3. The purpose of placing the axes of the shafts supporting the feed wheels in a vertical plane cutting the line of reciprocation of the needle at an acute angle is to give room for the reciprocation of the needle and the operation of the looper and spreader, and also to aid in the feeding of the fabric sections and in thevision of the stitching point. The fabric sections pass in a vertical plane cutting the needle at an acute angle, so that the fabric sections are moving toward the housing as they pass the feed wheels. The needle bar 36 is reciprocated by a, link 38 which is pivoted at 39 to a sleeve attached to the inner end of the needle bar. This link 38 cooperates with a crank 16 formed in the main actuating shaft I3. It is noted that the line of reciprocation of the needle bar intersects the axis of the shaft so that the needle bar is reciprocated not only by a direct connection, but by a direct thrust. Cooperating with the needle 35 is a thread carrying looper d l Said thread carrying looper M is mounted on a looper support $2. The looper support is in turn mounted for oscillation and for endwise reciprocation in a sleeve bushing 33. This sleeve bushing isfixed in the wall of the housing and extends both inside and outside of the wall. This sleeve bushing in which the looper support oscillates and tween said support and the front wall of the closed housing and prevents the escape of oil from the 75 housing onto the fabric. The looper support is inclined upwardly from the stitching point into the housing and this enables the looper whenmoved endwise of its axis to pass over the edges of the fabric sections being stitched after the looper has taken the needle thread loop. The looper support 42 extends all the way through the sleeve bushing, and is provided with a sleeve 44 at its inner end carrying a ball stud with which an eccentric strap 45 engages. The eccentric strap 45 cooperates with an eccentric on the main shaft I3. As the main shaft rotates, this eccentric strap 45 will impart oscillations to the looper 4| moving the same into and out of the needle thread loop. Mounted on the looper support 42 is a sleeve 46 carrying a ball stud 48 to which the arm 49 is connected. There is a collar 46 attached to the looper support 42 and this sleeve 46 lies between this collar 42% and the sleeve 44 at the end of the looper support. The sleeve 46 is free of any other connection to the looper support so that the looper support can oscillate in the sleeve, but any endwise movement of ,the sleeve 46 will impart endwise movement to the looper support 42. The arm 49 is integral with a sleeve carried by a shaft 50. Mounted on the shaft are fixed collars 50 50 between which the sleeve oscillates.
The sleeve is provided with a second arm 5| carrying a ball stud 52 to which an eccentric strap 53 is connected. The eccentric strap 53 cooperates with an eccentric 54 on the main shaft l3. As this eccentric 54 rotates, it will oscillate the arm 49 and move the looper carrier 42 endwise in its supporting sleeve bushing. This endwise movement of the looper support causes the thread carrying looper to move laterally and is so timed as to move the looper laterally after it has entered the needle thread loop to a position over the edges of the fabric sections and slightly within a vertical plane containing the fabric sections.
Cooperating with the thread carrying looper and with the needle is a spreader 55 which is provided with a hook end 56. The spreader 55 is fixed to a spreader support 51 which is mounted for oscillation in a sleeve bushing 58 carried by the housing of the machine. This sleeve bushing projects both'into and outside of the wall of the housing and provides a very durable support in which the spreader oscillates. The sleeve bushing also provides an oil tight connection between the spreader support and the front wall of the closed housing preventing the escape of oil from the housing. Fixed to the spreader support at the inner end thereof is a sleeve 59 (see Fig. 3) carrying an arm provided with a ball stud 60. Also fixed to the spreader support is a collar 51. This collar and the sleeve 59 prevent the support from moving endwise in the bushing 58. An eccentric strap 61 engages the ball stud and cooperates with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft l3. This provides a means for oscillating the spreader. The spreader is mounted for oscillation about an axis which is inclined to the vertical, so that the spreader moves in a plane inclining upwardly and outwardly from the housing. The spreader is so positioned when at the upper end of its stroke, that the looper thread is laid on to the hook end of the spreader by the lateral movement of the looper, after which the spreader moves downwardly and inwardly, thus opening the looper thread loop for the needle to enter. In Fig. 7 of the drawings, the looper is shown as positioned above the fabric edges and inside the vertical plane of the fabric sections, and the spreader is also shown as having engaged the sleeve bushing 5.

In Fig. 8 of the drawings, the needle is shown as well into the looper thread loop, the thread carrying looper is leaving the needle loop, and the spreader is about to release the looper thread loop. As the needle enters the fabric, the thread between stitches will push .the looper thread off from the hook end of the spreader. In Fig. 9 of the drawings, the looper is shown as entering the newly formed needle thread loop. A stitch finger 62 overlies the fabric edges and is carried by a flange 63 at the lower end of the A needle guiding member 64 is attached to the flange 65 of the sleeve bushing l8. These parts are of the usual construction and further description thereof is not thought necessary.
The invention of the present application is directed particularly to the arrangement of the stitch forming devices, the members for supporting the same, and the location of the actuating devices for said members, and in particular the arrangement whereby the members while passing through the front wall of a closed housing have an oil tight connection therewith so that the actuating devices located within the closed housing may be freely lubricated without permitting the escape of the oil through said front While the invention is particularly adapted for use in connection with feed cups or feed wheels for supporting the fabric, it will be obvious that said stitch forming devices may be used in conjunction with a different means for supporting and feeding the fabric sections. While there has been shown a thread carrying looper and a spreader cooperating therewith and with the needle for forming overedge stitches, it will be understood that the stitch forming devices may be of different character and operate in a different manner. The essential thing is that the members which support the stitch forming devices shall be confined to movements lengthwise of axes or movements rotating about axes so that the axes may be fixed 4 and thus the members supporting the several stitch forming devices so mounted in the front wall of the closed housing that oil tight connec-' tions may be made and the escape of oil prevented as noted. It will also be noted that the looper has merely an oscillating motion and a lateral movement always about or along the same fixed axis and the spreader likewise has an oscillating movement about a fixed axis; therefore, the means for operating the looper and the spreader has been greatly simplified and rendered positive in its action. The looper is given its endwise movement by a train of mechanism positively actuated from an eccentric strap. The looper is given its oscillations by a direct connection to an eccentric strap cooperating with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft. The spreader is given its oscillations by a direct connection to an eccentric strap cooperating with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft, and the needle bar is given its reciprocations by a link directly connected to a crank on the main actuating shaft.
This provides trains of mechanisms for the variand thoroughly lubricated without any fear of oil escaping and contacting with the fabric being stitched. Whenever it is stated that the parts move about vertical axes or horizontal axes this is merely for the purpose of description, and it is understood that the machine may be positioned in various ways changing the position of these axes relative to the horizontal or vertical without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
From the above it is apparent that the needle bar or rod, the looper support or rod, the spreader support or rod and the shafts operating the feed wheels, are each confined to a movement on a fixed axial line and each has an oil tight connection with the wall of the housing so that no oil can possibly escape from the housing to contact with and soil the fabric being stitched.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing having a laterally projecting. overhanging portion, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar and needle carried by said housing beneath said overhanging portion, vertically disposed shafts mounted in and depending from said overhanging portion, feed wheels carried by said shafts at the lower ends thereof, the axes of said shafts being located in a plane cutting the vertical plane containing the path of movement of the needle at an acute angle, and complemental stitch forming devices cooperating with said needle.
2. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing having a laterally projecting overhanging portion, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar and needle carried by said housing beneath said overhanging portion, vertically disposed shafts mounted in and depending from said overhanging portion, feed wheels carried by said shafts at the lower ends thereof, the axes of said shafts being located in a plane cutting the vertical plane containing the path of movement of the needle at an acute angle, a thread carrying looper, means carried by the housing for supporting said looper whereby the same may be oscillated into and out of the needle thread loop and moved laterally to a position over the edges of the fabric sections, and means cooperating with the looper and needle for completing the stitch formation;
3. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing having a laterally projecting overhan ing' portion, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar and needle carried by said housing beneath said overhanging portion, vertically disposed shafts mounted in and depenziing from said overhanging portion, feed wheels carried by said shafts at the lower ends thereof, the axes of said shafts being located in a plane cutting the vertical plane containing the path of movement of the needle at an acute angle, a thread carrying looper, means carried by the housing for supporting said looper whereby the same may be oscillated into and out of the needle thread loop and moved laterally to a position over the edges of the fabric sections, and a spreader moving in a single plane positioned so that the looper thread is placed on the spreader by the lateral movement opens the looper thread loop for the entrance of the needle.
4. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing having a laterally projecting overhanging portion, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar and needle carried by said housing beneath said overhanging portion, vertically disposed shafts mounted in and depending from said overhanging portion, feed wheels carried by said shafts at the lower ends thereof, the axes of said shafts being located in a plane cutting the vertical plane containing the path of movement of the needle at an acute angle, a main shaft within said housing disposed so that the line of reciprocation of the needle intersects said shaft, said shaft having a crank, and a link operated by said crank and directly connected to" the needle bar for reciprocating the same, and complemental stitch forming devices cooperating with said needle.
5. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing having a laterally projecting overhanging portion, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar and needle carried by said housing beneath said overhanging portion, vertically disposed shafts mounted in and depending from said overhanging portion, feed wheels carried by said shafts at the lower ends thereof, the axes of said shafts being located in a plane cutting the vertical plane containing the path of movement of the needle at an acute angle, a main shaft within said housing disposed so that the line of reciprocation -of the needle intersects said shaft, said shaft having a crank and a link operated by said crank and directly connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same, a thread carrying looper, a looper support mounted in the housing carrying said looper, and means for oscillating and moving said looper support endwise from said main shaft whereby said looper is oscillated into and out of the needle thread loop and is moved laterally in the needle thread loop to a position above the edges of the fabric sections.
6. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing having a laterally projecting overhangingportion, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar and needle carried by said housing, vertically disposed shafts mounted in and depending from said overhanging portion, feed wheels carried by said shafts, the axes of said shafts being located in a plane cutting the vertical plane containing the path of movement of the needle at an acute angle, a main shaft within said housing disposed so that the line of reciprocation of the needle intersects said shaft, said shaft having a crank and a link operated by said crank and directly connected to the needle bar for reciprocating the same, a thread carrying looper, a looper support mounted in the housing carrying said looper, means for oscillating and moving said looper support endwise from said main shaft whereby said looper is oscillated into and out of the needle thread loop and is moved laterally in the thread loop to a position above the edges of the fabric sections, and a spreader carried by a spreader support mounted in the housing and actuated from said shaft,'said spreader moving in a single plane and positioned so that the looper thread is placed on the spreader by the lateral movement of the looper and the spreader in its movementsopens the looper thread loop for the entrance of the needle.
7. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing, feed wheels mounted on said housingfor rotation about vertical axes and operating to support the fabric sections being stitched, a hori-* zontally reciprocating needle, athread carrving looper, means for moving said thread carrying looper into and out of the needle thread loop and laterally while in the needle thread loop to a position substantially over the edges of the fabric sections, a spreader, and means for oscillating said spreader in a single plane positioned so that the looper thread is placed on the spreader by the lateral movement of the looper and the spreader in its movement opens the looper thread loop for the entrance of the needle.

In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing, feed wheels mounted on said housing for rotation about vertical axes, a main shaft located in said housing, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar supported by said housing, a needle carried thereby, an eccentric member on said shaft, a link cooperating therewith and connected to said needle bar for reciprocating the same, a thread carrying looper, a looper support mounted in a fixed sleeve bushing for oscillation and endwise movements, an eccentric member on said shaft, means cooperating therewith and directly connected to said looper support for oscillating the same, a second eccentric on said shaft, and means cooperating therewith and connected to said looper support for moving said looper support endwise, a spreader cooperating with thev looper and the needle, and means for actuating said spreader.
9. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing, feed wheels mounted on said housing for rotation about vertical axes, a main shaft located in said housing, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar supported by said housing, a needle carried thereby, an-eccentric member on said shaft, a link cooperating therewith and connected to said needle bar for reciprocating the same, a thread carrying looper, a looper support mounted in a fixed sleeve bushing for oscillation and endwise movements, an eccentric member on said shaft, means cooperating therewith and directly connected to said looper support for oscillating the same, a second eccentric on said shaft, means cooperating therewith and connected to said looper support for moving said looper support endwise, a spreader, a spreader support mounted for oscillation in a fixed sleeve bushing carried by the housing, a third eccentric member on said shaft, and means operated thereby and connected to said spreader support for oscillating the same, said spreader being timed and positioned so that the looper thread is placed thereon by the lateral movement of the looper.
10. In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing, feed wheels mounted on said housing for rotation about vertical axes and operating to support the fabric section being stitched, a horizontal reciprocating needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a bushing extending through said housing in which said needle bar is mounted, a looper support having an oscillating and an endwise movement, a looper mounted thereon, a bushing extending through said housing in which said looper support is mounted, a spreader support having an oscillating movement only, a spreader carried thereby, a bushing extending through said housing in which said spreader sup port is mounted, all of said bushings being fixed to the housings and closing the same.

In a sewing machine, the combination of a housing, feed wheels mounted on said housing for rotation about vertical axes and operating to support the fabric sections being stitched, a horizontally reciprocating needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a bushing extending through said housing and projecting from the inner and outer 5 faces thereof in which the needle bar is mounted, a looper support having an oscillating and endwise movement, a looper mounted thereon, a bushing extending through said housing and projecting from the inner and outer faces thereof in which said looper support is mounted, a spreader support having an oscillating movement only, a spreader carried thereby, a bushing extending through said housing and projecting from the inner and outer faces thereof in which the spreader support is mounted, all of said bushings being fixed to the housing and closing the same.
12. In a sewing machine, the combination of a closed housing, means for supporting and feeding fabric sections disposed exteriorly of and carried by said housing, stitch forming devices for forming stitches in said fabric sections located exteriorly of said housing, a main actuating shaft extending through said closed housing, supporting members for the respective stitch forming devices each of which extends through the wall of said housing to the interior thereof and is provided with an oil tight connection therewith, and actuating devices located within said housing and connected to the respective members for operating the same.
13. In a sewing machine, the combination of a closed housing, vertically disposed shafts carried by said housing, feed wheels carried by said shafts and cooperating to support and feed the fabric sections during stitching, stitch forming devices for forming stitches in said fabric sections located exteriorly of said housing, a main actuating shaft extending through said closed housing, supporting members for the respective stitch forming devices each of which extends through the wall of said housing to the interior thereof and is provided with an oil tight connection therewith, and actuating devices located within said housing and connected to the respective members for operating the same.
14. In a sewing machine, the combination of a closed housing, vertically disposed shafts car ried by said housing, feed wheels carried by said shafts and cooperating to support and feed the fabric sections during stitching, said shafts extending into the closed housing, actuating means within the housing for operating said shafts, stitch forming devices for forming stitches in said fabric sections located exteriorly of the housing, a main actuating shaft extending through the closed housing, supporting members for the respective stitch forming devices each of which extends through the wall of said housing to the interior thereof and is provided with an oil tight connection therewith, and actuating devices located within said housing and connected to the respective members for operating the same.

In a sewing machine, the combination of a closed housing, a main actuating shaft extending through said closed housing, means for supporting and feeding the fabric sections disposed exteriorly of and carried by said housing, actuating devices operated by said main actuating shaft and located within said housing for operating said fabric supporting and feeding means, stitch forming devices for forming stitches in said*fabric sections including a needle, a needle bar carrying said needle, said needle bar extending through the front wall of the housing and having an oil tight connection therewith, means operated by said shaft and connected to the needle bar within the housing for actuating the same, a thread carrying looper, a supporting member for said thread carrying looper having its axis inclining upwardly from the stitching point and extending through the front wall of said housing and having an oil tight connection therewith, said looper support being adapted for endwise movement on its axis and oscillation about its axis, and actuating devices located within the housing and operated by said actuating shaft for giving endwise and oscillating movements to said looper supporting member.
17. In a sewing machine, the combination of a closed housing, a main actuating shaft extending through said closed housing, means for supporting and feeding the fabric sections disposed exteriorly of and carried by said housing, actuating devices operated by said main actuating shaft and located within said housing for operating said fabric supporting and feeding means, stitch forming devices for forming stitches in said fabric sections including a needle, a needle bar carrying said needle, said needle bar extending through the front wall of the housing and having an oil tight connection therewith, means operated by said shaft and connected to the needle bar within the housing for actuating the same, a thread carrying looper, a supporting member for said thread carrying looper having its axis inclining upwardly from the stitching point and extending through the front wall of said housing and having an oil tight connection therewith, said looper support being adapted for endwise movement on its axis and oscillation about its axis, actuating devices located within the housing and operated by said actuating shaft for giving endwise and oscillating movements to said looper supporting member, a spreader cooperating with said looper and said needle, a member supporting said spreader extending through the front wall of said housing and having an oil tight connection therewith, the axis of said member inclining upwardly from the stitching point, and means located within said housing and actuated from said shaft for oscillating said spreader support.

In a sewing machine, the combination o a housing, vertically disposed shafts located exteriorly of the housing, feed wheels mounted on said shafts for supporting and feeding the fabric sections, a horizontal reciprocating needle bar, a needle carried thereby, a main actuating shaft located in said housing, means operated thereby for positively reciprocating said needle bar, a thread carrying looper cooperating with said needle, a looper support carrying the looper and extending into said housing, said looper support being inclined upwardly from the stitching point toward the housing, means operated by said shaft for reciprocating said support endwise of its axis,means operated by said shaft for oscillating said looper support on its axis, a spreader cooperating with the looper and the needle, a spreader support inclining upwardly from the stitching point toward the housing and extending into said housing, and means actuated by said shaft and connected to said spreader support for oscillating the same about its axis.
19. In a sewing machine the combination of a closed housing, means for supporting and feeding fabric sections disposed exteriorly thereof and carried by said housing, stitch forming devices for forming stitches in said fabric sections located exteriorly of said housing, a main actuating shaft extending through said housing, supporting members for the respective stitch forming devices,
each being confined to movement on a fixed axial line, each of said members extending through the wall of the housing to the interior thereof and having an oil tight connection therewith and actuating devices located within said housing and connected to the respective members for operating the same.
20. In a-sewing machine, the combination of a closed housing; fabric feeding devices, and also stitch forming devices, outside of the housing; an actuating shaft extending through the wall of the housing; operating members for the stitch forming devices each of which extends through the wall of the housing and requires only motions of rotation or longitudinal reciprocation to effect stitch formation; oil tight joints where the shaft and the operating members penetrate the wall of the housing; and means within the housing whereby the actuating shaft imparts to the operating members the motions required to effect stitch formation.
21. A sewing machine comprising an actuating shaft, feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections in a vertical plane, a needle, a needle bar carrying said needle and extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels to a position adjacent said shaft, devices operated by said shaft for reciprocating said needle bar, a looper, a looper bar mounted for oscillation and endwise movement about a fixed axis and extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels to a position adjacent said shaft, devices operated by said shaft for oscillating the looper bar and for moving the bar endwise, a thread manipulating implement cooperating with said looper and said needle, a bar supporting said thread manipulating implement mounted for oscillation about a fixed axis and extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels to a position adjacent said shaft, and devices operated by said shaft for oscillating said last-named bar.

A sewing machine comprising a standard, an actuating shaft in said standard, feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections in a vertical plane, a needle, a needle bar carrying said needle and extending from a position ada looper bar mounted for oscillation and endwise movement about a fixed axis, said looper bar extending from a position adjacent said feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft,
devices actuated by said shaft for oscillating said bar and moving said bar endwise, a thread manipulating implement coperating with said looper and said needle, a bar supporting said thread manipulating implement mounted for oscillation about a fixed axis, said implement supporting bar extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, 7 and devices operated by said shaft and connected to said implement supporting bar for oscillating the same.
23. A sewing machine comprising a standard, an actuating shaft in said standard, feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections in a vertical plane, a needle, a needle bar carrying said needle and extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, devices operated by said shaft for reciprocating said needle bar, a looper, a looper bar mounted for oscillation and endwise movement about a fixed axis, said looper bar extending from a position adjacentsaid feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, devices actuated by said shaft for oscillating said bar and moving said bar endwise, a thread manipulating implement cooperating with said looperiand said needle, a bar supporting said thread manipulating implement mounted for oscillation about a fixed axis, said implement sup porting bar extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, and devices operated by said shaft and connected to said implement supporting bar for oscillating the same, the axes of said looper supporting bar and of said thread manipulating implement supporting bar being inclined upwardly from the feed wheels into said standard so as to facilitate the intere'ngaging of the thread loops around the edge of the fabric sections.
24. A sewing machine comprising a standard,
an actuating shaft in said standard, feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections in a vertical plane, a needle, a needle bar carrying said needle and extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, a looper, a looper bar mounted for oscillation and endwise movement about a fixed axis, said looper bar extending from a position adjacent said feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, devices actuated by said shaft for oscillating said bar and ,moving said bar endwise, a thread manipulating implement cooperating with said looper and said needle, a bar supporting said thread manipulating implement mounted for oscillation about a fixed axis, said implement supporting bar extending from a position adjacent the feed wheels into said standard and adjacent said shaft, and devices operated by said shaft and connected to said implement supporting bar for oscillating the same, the openings in the wall of the standard through which the needle bar, looper bar and the implement supporting bar pass being closed by bushings so as to prevent oil from being thrown from the standard on to the fabric sections being stitched.
25. A sewing machine comprising a standard, an actuating shaft in said standard, feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections in a vertical plane, said feed wheels being located outside of said standard, stitch forming devices actuated by said shaft including a needle reciprocating in a right line above the feed wheels and adapted to form a needle loop through the fabric, a looper movable into said needle thread loop and bodily laterally to a position above the edges of the fabric sections being stitched, and a spreader moving in a single plane into the looper thread loop and thence to a position for positioning said looper thread loop for the needle to enter.

In a sewing machine, the combination of fabric feeding mechanism including opposed feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections in a vertical plane and stitch forming mechanism for forming overedge stitches about the edges of said fabric sections, said stitchforming mechanism including a needle, means for imparting a right-line movement thereto, a looper, and means for imparting oscillating movements about a fixed axis and right-line movements parallel to said axis whereby said looper is given a movement substantially parallel to the direction of the feed and a second movement transverse to the direction of feed, and extending from a point above one of the feed wheels to a point above the other feed wheel, and a thread manipulating implement cooperating with said looper and said needle.
27. In a sewing machine the combination of a closed housing, feed wheels for supporting and feeding fabric sections disposed exteriorly of the housing, stitch forming devices also exteriorly of the housing above the feed wheels, actuating mechanism within the housing and rods or shafts confined to movement on a fixed axial line and having an oil tight connection with the wall of the housing for communicating the necessary movements from the actuating mechanism to the feed wheels and stitch forming devices.
