Description
A. M. PERRIN 2,@M9M
SPRING PROTECTOR Filed March 9, 1936 Patented May 26, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 4 Claims.
My invention relates to springs and has for its object to provide a new and eicient protector for screen door springs.
A further object is to provide a spring metal guard for coil springs which guard has each end :engaged with the spring and is adapted to bend with the spring to protect the spring and keep it from breaking where it bends around a sharp angle.
A still further object is to provide a door and spring protector which will protect both the spring from breaking or excessive stretching where it engages the corner of the door, and which will also protect the corner of the door from being marred b-y the bending of the spring therearound.
These objects I accomplish with the device illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views and as described in the specication forming a part of this application and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing in which I have shown my device and its uses,
Figure 1 is a'plan view of the device shown attached to the door jam and to the door, parts cut away.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the spring protector.
Figure 4 is a face view of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is an end view of the one end of the guard or protector which engages the end of the spring.
V Figure 6 is an end view of the end of the protector which engages around the spring.
Figure 7 is a plan view of the device showing the door opened.
Figure 8 is a view of a section of the spring showing a cylindrical slide in the end of the spring guard.
In the drawing I have shown the door jam as A, and the door as B. The hinge is shown as C and suitable hooks or attaching devices are shown as D in the door jam and E in the door.
Into the door jam the hook D is screwed and the hook E is screwed into the door a proper distance to give the correct amount of tension to a round hole l2 therethrough, the end II to encircle the spring. The other end I3 of the metal strip l0 is bent out at an angle and has preferably a square hole or rectangular hole I4 therethrough.4 This hole is to be attached over the loop 5 to hold the end of the metal strip I0 in proper position at all times for protecting the spring and for protecting the door.
Ihe end Il of the strip I0 may be provided with a cylindrical socket I6 to slide over the spring as sho-wn in Fig. 8, so that the end of the strip ID will never get caught in the coils of the spring S.
Figure 7 shows the use of the spring guard to hold the spring from engaging against and `Inar- 15 ring the corner I1 of the door and to prevent spreading of the coils of the spring S thereby weakening the spring and stretching its coils so that they do not have any tension to draw the door closed.
This device may be used on and with any spring where it is to be exed around or against an angled surface to protect the spring and also the surface and any deviation or departure from the showing as set out in the drawing and such 25 improvements as may be made do not depart from the spirit of the invention nor from the scope of the claims. l
Having thus described my invention I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim: 30 1. In a spring for doors, the combination of a coil spring; means to secure the ends of the spring, one end to the door jam and the other end to the door; a flat door and spring guard carried on said spring with one end secured to 35 the end of the spring which is secured to the door jam and the other end slidably carried on said spring.
2. In a closure spring to hold a closure in normally closed position, the combination of a coil 40 spring mounted on the closure and on the frame in which it is suspended; and a flat metal spring carried with the iiat side to engage the closure when it is opened, said spring to bend around the edge of the closure when it is opened with 45 the curve of the coil spring.
3. In a closure spring, the combination of a coil spring; a flat metal guard for said coil spring mounted with one end to move on the exterior of said spring and the other end to be secured to the end of the coil spring where it is secured to the frame in which the closure is to operate.
4. A spring guard comprising, a flat strip of metal having the ends bent out at an angle to the body one end to be secured to the spring and the other end to be slidably carried on said spring, the entire guard to bend with said spring.
