however, that the work to be skived is fed away from the observer, as viewed in Fig. 1, with its edge against the guide 43 and its margin beneath the presser, to the rotary knife 9. With the parts in their normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, a shoulder or fold scarf (to be described later) will be produced; and when the treadle is depressed to swing the roll down in a counterclockwise direction until the small block 33 encounters the right hand stop 35, a feather edge scarf will be produced, the positions in which the two limiting stops 35 are held thus determining the characteristics of the two scarfs.
The edge guide and presser, except for a means for quickly adjusting them in a path parallel tol the axis of the roll shaft, are or may be substantially like the guide and presser disclosed in United States Letters Patent No. 1,829,792, granted November 3, 1931, to Newell V. Dyer. The presser 46 (Fig. 4) is fast to the outer end of a three-part spring 41 of elongated U-shape, the ends of which are fastened by a screw 49 and spacers 5| to the stem 45 of the edge guide. A thumb screw 53 may be turned to raise and lower the presser, and a thumb nut 55 may be turned to vary the force which the presser exerts upon the work.
In the present construction the guide and presser, instead of being adjustable horizontally by hand and held fast in adjusted position, may be moved instantly from one horizontal position to another by a treadle, adjustable stops being provided for limiting the extent of this movement. The stem 45 of the guide 43 is slidably mounted in a bracket 51 (Figs. 1, 2 and 3) having a horizontal portion 51 (Figs. 2, 3 and 4). The upright portion of the bracket 51 (Fig. l) has slots 59 to receive screws 6| the stems of which pass through l these slots and are threaded into a block 63 which,

Referring now more particularly to Figs. 2, 3 and 5, the stem 45 of the guide 43 isV wider at its rear end (the right-hand end as viewed in Figs. 2 and 4) and this widened portion rests upon the horizontal portionl 51 of the bracket 51. One edge of this widened portion (the left-hand edge as shown in Fig. 3) is shaped to project into a guideway having an `overhanging wall which is formed on the bracket 51. The opposite edge is beveled at an abrupt angle, and the upper corner of this bevel is engaged by the beveled edge of a hardened plate 65 which is fastened by screws 61 to the upright portion of the bracket 51. The widened portion of the stem 45 is thus held in place and guided in its sliding movement. In order further to guide the stem 45, a guide-block 69 (Fig. 3) is located in an opening in the upright portion ofthe bracket 51, said guide-block having a face which is slightly undercutto t against the abruptly beveled edge of the stem 45 and being fastened to the horizontal portion 51 of the bracket 51 by a screw 1 I, there being a small space between the block 69 and the end of the horizontal portion 51 so that any wear on the surface of the block and the stem may be taken up by tightening the screw.
It is desirable, for reasons presently to be stated, that means be provided for predetermining the limits of sliding movement of the guide and presser. To this end a U-shaped member 13 is fastened by screws 15 to the under side of the horizontal portion 51' of the bracket 51; and
. through the upwardly extending arms of this U- shaped member are threaded respectively stop screws 11, 19 held respectively in adjusted position by check nuts 8|, 83. The stop screws lie in the path of movement of the widened portion of the stem 45 of the edge guide and provide means for arresting the sliding movement of the guide and presser in both directions.

Referring to Fig. 1, the lower end of this lever 81 passes through a slot in the 2 top 9| of the bench upon which the machine is mounted and is urged continually to the left by a tension spring 93 so as to hold the widened portion of the stem 45 of the edge guide against the stop screw 11, the guide and presser being then in their normal retracted positions. A treadle 95 provides means for swinging the lower end of the lever 81 to the right to move the guide and presser to the left until the widened portion of the stem 45 of the edge guide contacts with the stop screw 19. This treadle is connected by a treadle rod 96 with an arm 91 the hub of which is fast to a rock-shaft 99. Also fast to this rockshaft is the hub of a second arm |ll| the outer end of which is connected by a link |03 with the lower end of the shifting lever 81. With this construction, the feed roll the guide 43 and the presser 46 normally occupy the positions shown in Fig. 1. The treadle 4| may be depressed at any time to tilt the feed roll whereupon the 4 guide and presser tilt with it; and the treadle 94 may be depressed at any time to slide the guide and presser to the left.
The purpose of this construction, as has been indicated above, is to provide for instantly ad- 4 justing these parts of the machine so that the operator may change rapidly from one kind of scarf to another. Referring now more particularly to Figs. 7 to 9a, some of the ways in which different scarfs may be produced will be de- 5 scribed. If now it is desired to produce a feather edge scarf shown in Fig. 8a, the treadle 4| is depressed to tilt the roll about the axis a: into the position shown in Fig. 8 and also in Fig. 5. It should be here noted that the fold scarf of Fig. '7a and the feather edge scarf of Fig. 8E are of substantially the same width. If now it is desired to produce the blunt edge seam scarf of Fig. 9a, the treadle 95 is depressed to slide the guide 7 43 and the presser 4E to the left until the lefthand stop screw 19 stops such movement, whereupon the parts will be in the positions shown in Fig. 9 and also in Fig. 6. It may be noted that the seam scarf of Fig. 9a is like the feather edge scarf of Fig. 8a, except that its extreme end has been cut off.
It may sometimes be desired to produce a fold scarf which is narrower than the feather edge scarf. In such case the feed roll is held in its normal uppermost position, as shown in Fig. '7, and the guide and presser are moved to the left into the positions which they occupy in Fig. 9, so that the edge guide is over the periphery of the roll and spaced from the right-hand end thereof. Ii then it is desired to produce the feather edge scarf of Fig. 8a, the feed roll i l is tilted, and the guide and presser allowed to resume their right-hand positions, all as shown in Fig. 8. Without going into further detailed explanation of what adjustments may be made, it will be evident that the machinemay be instantly adjusted by means of the treadles to produce different kinds of scarfs in any desired order and that scarfs which differ from those illustrated will result if the feed roll Il is adjusted longitudinally into another position to change the location cf the point :c with respect to the roll.
Although the invention has been set forth as embodied in a particular machine, it will be understood that the invention is not limited in the scope of its application to the particular machine which has been shown and described.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A skiving machine having, in combination, a knife, an angularly adjustable feed roll, an edge guide, a presser, said edge guide and presser being adjustable across the work-supporting surface of the feed roll, stops for limiting the extent of this movement of adjustment, yielding means for normally holding the guide and presser in a position determined by one of the stops, and operator-controlled means for moving them instantly into a position determined by the other stop.
2. A skiving machine having, in combination, a knife, an angularly adjustable feed roll, an edge guide, a presser, said edge guide being adjustable across the work-supporting surface of the feed roll, adjustable stops for limiting the extent of the movement of adjustment, yielding means for normally holding the guide in a position determined by one of the stops, and operatorcontrolled means for moving it instantly into a position determined by the other stop.
3. A skiving machine having, in combination,
a rotary knife, a feed roll, a support for the roll angularly adjustable to vary the inclination of the scarf produced, a presser for holding the work against the roll, a guide for engaging the edge of the work, a carrier for said presser and guide slidably mounted upon the feed roll support, yielding means for holding the carrier at one limit of its path of sliding movement, and operator-controlled means for adjusting the feed roll support angularly and for moving the carrier instantly into selected positions relative .to the roll irrespective of the angular position of the feed roll support.
4. A skiving machine having, in combination, a knife, an edge guide, a presser, a feed roll, said guide and presser being mounted for adjustment across the periphery of the feed roll to vary the width of the scarf produced, yielding means tending at all times to move the guide and presser into and to hold it in a predetermined position at one limit of its path of movement, said feed roll being angularly adjustable to vary the character of the scarf, and two operator-controlled means manipulation of one of which tilts the feed roll, and manipulation of the other of which adjusts the presser and guide instantly to the other linut of its path of movement.
5. A skiving machine having, in combination, a rotary disk knife, an angularly adjustable feed roll, a presser and an edge guide angularly adjustable with the roll and slidably adjustable along the periphery of the roll whereby, with the roll in an angular position in which the upper element of its periphery is parallel or substantially so to the plane of the cut of the knife and the edge guide is above the periphery of the roll and spaced from the end thereof, a comparatively narrow fold scarf will be produced, whereas with said upper element at a considerable angle to the plane of the cut of the knife and with the work engaging-face of the edge guide in substantial alinement with one end of the roll, a wider feather edge scarf will be produced, and operator-controlled means capable of instant manipulation to adjust the parts of the machine into either of these two positions.
6. A skiving machine having in combination, a knife and a feed roll mounted for relative angular adjustment to vary the inclination of the scarf produced, a presser and edge guide mounted for adjustment across the periphery of the feed roll to vary the width of the scarf produced, and two operator-controlled means manipulation of one of which instantly causes relative angular adjustment between the knife and roll and manipulation of the otherof which instantly adjusts the presser and guide.
