6 anims. (o1. 25o-20) This invention relates to a radio receiver control and more especially to such a control which is arranged to be operated by a clock device.
`It is anob-ject of the invention to provide such a control in which an alarm clock or similar device may be arranged to put. into operation `a radio receiver and thereby cause it'to reproduce broadcast speech or music. A
A further object of the invention is to provide an ordinary alarm clock with certain insulated connections whereby certain parts of it may be used as a switch mechanism to close a circuit to a radio receiver.
A still further object of the invention is to l5 improve generally the efficiency of a time control Vsignal device and to permit the same to be readily and` cheaply constructed by means of component parts which are readily available on the market. Other objects of the invention will become apparent to those skilled in the art as the description thereof proceeds.V Y For a better understanding of the invention reference is made to the accompanying drawing in which,

Referring to Figure 1 of the drawing reference numeral 32 denotes a complete radio receiver including a loudspeaker LS, the entire receiver and loudspeaker being mounted in a suitable cabinet 25. The radio receiver may be of the tuned radio frequency type o-r of the superheterodyne type and have the usual tuning means whereby any desired broadcasting station operating in the present broadcasting range may be tuned in. The receiver may be, for example, of the type disclosed in Miessner Patent No. 1,720,914 and mayinclude the transformer, rectifier and filter circuit of said patent for supplying the necessary power to the tubes and loudspeaker thereof. As shown in said patent the primary P of the power transformer is connected to a plug ZSadapted to be screwed into a wall socket through a flexible two wire cable 30.
Included in series in this power supply circuit is a switch blade S which in its closed position connects the switch terminals 21 and 28 to energize the circuits within the receiver and cause the loudspeaker thereof to operate when a desired station is tuned in. Y
Mounted in a separate cabinet 2I is a sepa-A rate loudspeaker 22 and an alarm clockv 2E).v The alarm clock has the standard clock mechanism and control device whereby the operator thereof may set it to ring at any desired time. Both the loudspeakers mentioned are preferably of ythe 'electro-magnetic type, the plus terminals of their operating coils being denoted by numeral 23 and their minus terminals by numeral 24.A These terminals are connected together as shown by insulated conductor 25 and 26. As shown in Fig- (ULl switch terminal 21 and its opposite end connected in any preferred manner to the bell I5 of the alarm clock. The other switch terminal 28 is connected by a conductor I9 to the metallic operating member 8 whichcarries the bell clapper I4. The insulated wires whichv connect the mechanism within cabinet 2I to the radio receiver may all be arranged within an insulated covering 3| which may be of braided fabric or similarmaterial which is readily flexible, so that the connections between the alarm device and the radio vreceiver maybe laid flat on the floor of the room and be small and inconspicuous as shown in Fig. 3.
As shown more in detail in Figure 2 the alarm mechanism' of the clock is represented diagrammatically by numeral I3 and is provided with the usual operating lever I2 having a pin'II secured at its end at right angles to its length, the pin II serving to oscillate back and forth in a slot I0 in the metallic spring member 8 which carries the bell clapper I4. This alarm operating mech'- anism is all mounted on the frame member I of the alarm clock and is of standard and well known construction. For the purposes of this invention, however, it is necessary, wherethe'frame member I is made of metal to insulate member 8 therefrom. For this purpose an upstanding lug 'I of insulation material may be secured to member I by any preferred means n'ot shown vand. member 8 secured to said lug by screws 9 as shown. f
I also prefer to insulate the bell I5 of the clock from frame I by providing an upstanding lug I1 of insulation material which may be secured to member I by any preferred means not shown. A pillar I6 which serves to support the bell I5 may be secured to member I'I by any preferred means such as the screw 33. The usual slide device for shutting off the alarm is also shown and comprises a slide member 3 having an elongated slot 4 through which passes a screw 5. This screw may beV screwed into a member 2 of insulation material, member 2 being secured to the frame I by any preferred means not shown. The slide 3 is tapered at its right end to engage member 8 and press it to the right thus causing the clapper I4 to rest rmly against bell I5 and stop the alarm.V Slide member 3 has the usual operating handle I5 at-onefend and, if member 3 is made .of metal, I Vprefer to make the operating knob 'B o'f insulation material so that the operator Will not be subject to the voltage of the current supplied. As shown the conductor I8 may :be Aconnected near the top of member 8 inranypreferred manner and conductor I9 connectedftofbell 15.
In the operation of the device 'the operator 'may tune in a desired broadcasting station in the evening before retiring and then open :switch .2S .of the receiver.V This will cause the circuits of the receiverto be de-energized and no sound will come Vfromrthe'speaker LS. The vcabinet 2l may be placed near the bedrof the'user and inthe evening he Asets the alarm to ring at any .desired hour in the usual manner. Upon being :awakened by vthe -valarm, when the operator ishuts off the yalarm by moving slide 3 to the right, .it Vwill be seen ithat the clapper I4 Ais held in contact with Jbell 1.5 thereby closing the power supply :circuit to theV receiver whereupon the operator will hear reproduced from `speaker 22 the speech or music which is .being broadcasted from the :station to which his receiver 32 is `tuned in. If this program consists 'of announcements :of exercises, it w'illreadily V-be seen `that the described arrangement permits the user lo'f this device to engage in athletic exercises immediately after -being :awakened `in the morning by his .alarm fclock. When the Yalarm is operating, *the operator receives sound waves consisting largely oi' a single note1or frequency and :after stopping the alarm he "receives sound Waves representing Amusic or voice rfrequencies 'from speaker 22 which :'fre- Y Y Iquencies may cover ra `fairly-wide band.

In combination Vin a signalling system, .an yalarm clock having xed and vmovable operating members, time controlled means for causing said movable member to strike said xed member to thereby produce sound waves, a manually adjustable member arranged to engage said movable member and retain it in contact with said xed member, a radio receiver including a loudspeaker and a power supply circuit and a pair of leads connecting said iixed and movable members in series in said power supply circuit, whereby said radio receiver is energized when said manually adjustable member is moved into engagement with said movable member.
