METAL CAN BODY Filed May 3, 1935 m Wwwwbm Patented Apr. 28, 1936 UNITED STATES METAL CAN v BODY Alfred L. Kronquest, Syracuse, N. Y., assigner to Continental Can Company, Inc., New Yor N. Y., a corporation of New York Application May 3, 1935, Serial No. 19,718
1 Claim.
' tween the lapping sections at the ends thereof is formed with interengaging hooks. The interengaging hooks and the lapping portions at the ends of the side seam are united by a solder bond. Considerable diiiiculty has been experienced in the flowing of the solder by capillary attraction throughout the entire region of the interengaging hooks and under excessive internal strain, the solder bond gives way and the side seam opens.
An object of the present invention is to provide a construction of side seam which permits of a more eicient solder bonding of the interengaging parts.
A further object of the invention is to provide a side seam wherein the edge portions throughout the central region of the side seam may be given an extended lapping contact and thus the extent of the solder bonding increased in such region.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a. plan view of a blank which has been notched and properly shaped for the forming of the can body;
Fig. 2 is an edge View of the blank after the hooks have been formed thereon;
Fig.` 3 is an outside view of a portion of the can body embodying the improved side seam;
Fig. 4 is a. similar view from the inside of the can body;
Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 6 is a sectional view on the line 6-6 of Fig. 3, and v Fig. 7 is a sectional view on the line 1-1 of in carrying out the invention, a sheet of metal is cut so as to form a body blank indicated at I. Said body blank at one edge portion thereof is provided with notches 2, 2, thus offsetting a portion of metal which is folded back to form a hook 3 as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The edge portion at the other end of the blank is provided with slits 4, 5, 6, and l. The metal between the slits 4' and 5 and also the metal between the slits 6 and 'l is folded back to form hooks 8, as indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The blank is curved into cylindrical shape, and these edge portions are joined to form the side seam. 'Ihe hooks 8, 8 will interlock with the hook 3. There will be av portion of the hook 3 between ithe slits 5 and 6 which does not interlock with any hook portion. This is in the outer part of the side seam. The portion 9 of the metal between the slits 5 and 6, when the hooks are engaged, will extend to one side of the side seam,
' as indicated in Fig. 5. After the hooks are interlocked and bumped, this extended metal portion 9 will be brought into contact with the wall of ihe i can body. The ends-of the side seam are lapped in the usu'al manner. i
A side seam is, therefore, constructed wherein throughout the central region thereof, the outer edge portion of the side seam is folded back so that the side seam as viewed from the outer face of the container body isuniform, and the -edge of the metal is concealed within the side escape at the ends of the hooks and at this central region where the under folded extension 9 contacts with the body Wall. This permits the solder to flow throughout the entire contacting parts of the hooks and also to flow between the extension 9 and the body wall. In the central region which extends throughout perhaps onethird of the length of the side seam, there is this extended solder bond formed bythe uniting of the extension 9 to the body.
This extended solder bond in the central region of the side seam greatly increases the. strength of the side seam and at the same time, there has been substantially no change made in the outer appearance of the side seam. Aftervthe side seam has been solder bonded, then the ends of the body are flanged in the usual manner, and can ends are secured thereto by double seaming. This produces a container which will withstand any internal pressure developing within the container during the packaging of food prod` ucts or beverages therein. It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters- Patent, is- I A metal can body adapted to have its end portionsanged and end members secured thereto by double seaming, including edge portions joined in a side seam extending from one end to the other of the can body, said edge portions at the ends of the side seam being lapped for hanging, the outer edge portion of the vside seam in an extended region midway between the ends thereof being folded back within the limits of the side seam for concealing the edge and strengthening the edge portion, the corresponding inner edge portion of the side seam being extended beyond said turned back portion and to one side of the side seam, said side seam having interengaging hook portions extending from the sections at the central region of theside seam to the lapping sections at the ends of the side seam, and a solder bonding material for uniting the contact- -ing portions of the side seam and joining the extended portion of the side seam to the can body Wall.
I ALFRED L. KRONQUEST.
