2 Claims.
This invention relates to an improvement in knives for shuttle feeler mechanisms.
For many years a certain well-known type of shuttle feeler mechanism has been provided with an upper filling knife which has been constructed in such a manner that it has been incapable of adjustment except indirectly through an adjustment provided for the feeler mechanism as a whole. This fact has rendered this knife un- 10 satisfactory because it has been difficult to obtain a fine adjustment of the knife itself.
The object therefore of this invention is to provide an upper filling knife of a shuttle feeler mechanism with a heel which may be adjusted 15 as may be desired to advance or retard the time at which said knife will be actuated, thereby making it possible to compensate for wear to the knife and bunt-er and for variations in distances found in various looms without it being necessary 20 to adjust the feeler mechanism as a whole.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel means for quickly and effectively obtaining the arcuate adjustment of the filling knife desired.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a knife with an adjustable heel and clamping means therefor which will effectively resist a tendency to loosen created by the frequent engagement of the heel with a hunter.
The invention consists in a knife for shuttle feeler mechanisms as set forth in the following specification and particularly as pointed out in the claims thereof.
Referring to the drawing:
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of the upper portion of a feeler mechanism of well-known type, an upper filling knife embodying my invention being provided for the feeler mechanism.
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrows on said line.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are side elevations of portions of an upper filling knife illustrating modified embodiments of my invention.
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view taken on the line 6-6 of Fig. 5 looking in the direction of the arrows on said line.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
In the drawing, 1 represents the upper portion of a shuttle feeler of well-known form embodying therein a nose portion 8 provided with a flat surface 9 against which a lower or stationary filling knife l provided with a cutting edge ll 55 abuts in a well-known manner. Abutting face to face against the knife I0 is an upper or movable filling knife |2 provided with a cutting edge I3 adapted to co-operate with the cutting edge H of the knife Hi to sever the filling thread in a manner well known to those skilled in the art. The knife I2 is pivotally mounted upon a bolt It in turn mounted in the nose portion 8 of the feeler and said bolt and a spring washer H) are also utilized to secure a thread holder I6 and thread holder guide H in position upon the feeler in operative relation to the knives I9 and I2 and to the filling thread which is to be severed thereby.
All of the parts hereinbefore mentioned are old and their operation is Well known to those skilled in the art. The novel features of this invention reside in providing the upper filling knife I 2 with a heel |8 which may be adjusted as may be desired to advance or retard the time at which said knife will be actuated. To this end the heel i8 is pivotally attached adjacent to its upper end at H? to the knife |2 in a manner to permit the lower portion thereof to swing forwardly and rearwardly as may be desired in contact with the face of a depending portion 20 of said knife. The lower portion of the heel I8 is clamped to the portion 20 of the knife I2 by means of a bolt 2| which extends through a slot 22 provided in the portion 20 of the knife and through a slot 23 provided in the heel l8. The portion of the bolt 2| which is located in the slot, 22 is preferably square. A thumb nut 24 is provided for the bolt 2|.
The opposite longitudinal edges of the slot 22 converge in the same plane with the opposite longitudinal edges of the slot 23 to form acute angles at their intersections and when the bolt 2| is forced upwardly in said slots the action of the bolt is to cause the lower portion of the heel l8 to move rearwardly upon the portion 20 of the knife I 2 and a downward movement of the bolt in said slots will cause said heel to move forwardly. In this manner the timing of the actuation of the knife I2 is advanced or retarded as desired. When the heel has been correctly positioned upon the knife these members are securely clamped together by means of the bolt 2| and thumb nut 24 and it will be noted that when the front edge of the heel contacts with a suitable bunter, not illustrated in the drawing but well known to those skilled in the art, that the blow received by the heel will not tend to loosen the bolt 2| but will, on the other hand, tend to tighten the bolt between the edges of the slots 22 and 23.
In Fig. 3, I have illustrated a modified embodiment of my invention in which the depending portion 20 of the knife [2 is provided with a series of holes 26 and the heel I8 is secured to the portion 20 of the knife l2 by means of a suitable screw or bolt 21 which projects through the slot 23 provided in the heel and into any one of the holes 26, as may be desired, to vary the position of the heel upon the knife. In this form of the device the series of holes extend at an acute angle to the slot 23 and the action of the device is the same as that of the device of Fig. 1, except that the adjustment that can be obtained is not as fine.
In Fig. 4 still another modified embodiment of the invention is illustrated in which a suitable screw or bolt 28 projects through a hole 29 provided in the heel l8 and into any one of a series of holes 30 provided in the depending portion 20 of the knife I2 and said knife and heel are clamped securely together by means of said screw or bolt.
In Figs. 5 and 6 still another modified embodiment of the invention is illustrated in which the heel I8 is secured to the knife I2 by means of a screw or bolt 3| having an eccentric portion 32 embodied therein which is located within a slot 33 provided in the depending portion 29 of the knife and when said screw is rotated in a hole 34 provided therefor in the heel l8 the latter will be moved forwardly or rearwardly as may be desired upon the knife. When the proper adjustment of the heel upon the knife is secured these members are clamped together by means of the bolt 3| and a co-operating nut 35.
In each of the embodiments of this invention the heel l8 may be rocked upon its pivot l9 to move the lower portion of said heel forwardly or rearwardly for the purpose of changing the timing of the filling cutter I2 and a much quicker and more accurate adjustment of the cutter may be obtained than has heretofore been possible.
Furthermore, in each of the embodiments of the invention the clamping means provided will effectively hold the heel securely clamped to the cutter.
I claim:
1. A knife for shuttle feeler mechanisms comprising, in combination, a blade provided with an aperture extending therethrough, a heel pivotally mounted upon said blade and also provided with an aperture extending therethrough, and means slidably mounted in both of said apertures to provide a relative rocking movement between said heel and blade and also clamp the same one to another.
2. A knife for shuttle feeler mechanisms comprising, in combination, a blade, a heel pivotally mounted thereon, said blade and heel having slots extending therethrough, the opposite longitudinal edges of one slot converging in the same plane with those of the other slot, and a member slidably mounted in both of said slots and adapted to produce a relative rocking movement between the heel and blade and also clamp the same one to another.
