Description

March 10, 1936. R. KINGSLEY STRIP CLIP Filed Sept. 6, 1954 ATTOR NEY Patented Mar. 10, 1936 v UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
The invention relates to a strip clip and more especially to a spool clamp for locking strips to spools, such as film strips, etc.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a clip or clamp of this character, wherein strips of cloth, paper, thread, string or other flexible material or composition adapted to be wound on and from a spool can be firmly and securely attached to the latter and is readily and easily detachable therefrom, the clip or clamp being of novel construction and usuable primarily for the fastening of strip films to spools Within cameras.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a clip or clamp of this character, wherein the same when attaching the end of a strip to a spool will prevent slippage of such strip or the accidental release of the strip from the spool, the strip at one end being readily attached to the spool with dispatch and firmly held for winding thereon or unwinding therefrom.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a clip or clamp of this character which is extremely simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and effective for the purposes thereof, strong, durable, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully desccribed in detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which discloses the preferred embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a spool and film strip, showing the latter attached to the spool by the clamp or clip constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary perspective view.
Figure 3 is a detail perspective view of the clip removed from the spool.
Similar reference characters indicate correspo'nding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring to the drawing in detail, A desighates generally a portion of a strip of material, for example, a strip film, and B a spool upon which the strip is adapted to be wound or unwound therefrom. This spool, as usual, has the end circular guide pieces 5, preferably made from metal, although they may be otherwise formed, for the guiding of the strip in the winding and unwinding operation.
Provided in the spool B is an elongated slot 6 which extends longitudinally thereof for a distance of its length and is centered with respect thereto, the said slot being adapted to open through the spool B at diametrically opposite points thereof, while the strip A at the attaching end has the outwardly tapered tab terminal I which is threaded through the slot 6 in the spool in a manner as is clearly shown in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawing.
The clip or clamp is. in the form of a halfcylindrical body 8, preferably made from inherent resilient material, and has at opposite ends the retaining tongues or ears 9. This body 8 is adapted to be sprung into position upon the spool B, so'that the tongues 9 will resiliently embrace such spool for rotatable connection of the body therewith. The body "I is preferably of the length of the spool between the end pieces 5 so as to avoid any displacement of the said body longitudinally upon the spool. It will be apparent that when the body I is turned upon the spool to one position the slot 6 will be uncovered so that the tube 1 can be threaded through such slot with its can be readily and conveniently wound upon and unwound from the spool in the servicing thereof.
What is claimed is: 1. The combination with a spool having a slot extending transversely therethrough and of less length than said spool, of a springy half cylindrical shaped body frictionally gripping said spool and embracing the same throughout the length of said spool and turnable about such spool for the fastening of a strip when passed through the slot to have the strip at its free end lie between the spool and said body, the said body being cut away between its ends to provide a clearance for the free end of said strip.
2. A clip or clamp of the kind described, comprising an inherently resilient body of a formation to partially embrace a spool for the clamping of a strip between it and the said spool, the body being of a substantially half cylindrical shape and cut into at opposite edges between the ends thereof to provide end tongues on said body spaced from and at opposite sides of its transverse axis and of a length to extend around the spool for a greater portion of its diameter for frictionally retaining the body in embracing relation to the spool for turning movement thereon.
