In operation, the lever 45 is moved in a clockwise direction (Fig. 3) ,thereby moving the plunger 49 upwardly and laterally so that the Wrapped confection can be placed in the support, which is the cylinder 8, with the ends I6 of the wrapper extending through the slots 9 and seating on the lower end walls of said slots, thereby supporting the confection in the cylinder. The support or ice-cream cone I2 is held at the lower end of the cylinder 8 in position to receive the confection after the wrapper has been removed from the confection and the confection discharged from the cylinder. This movement of the lever 45 turns the gear wheel 35, and thereby the pinion 34, and-operates the lever 32, the links 30 and the levers 21, thereby moving the slides II inwardly toward each other and engaging the formed parts 4I against the ends of the rod 50. When the formed parts 5I of the levers 24 are engaged against the ends of the rod 50, the gripper arms I9 are thereby moved away from the gripper arms I8 so that, when the wrapped confection is placed in the cylinder 8, the ends I6 of the wrapper will extend between the respective arms I8 and the cooperating arms I9. The lever 45 is then moved in the opposite direction and, through the connections described, moves the slides I'I outwardly. Before the gripper arms I8, I9 move beyond the ends I6 of the wrapper, the formed parts 5I move away from the ends of the rod 50 and permit the springs 28 to operate the levers 24 and clamp the gripper arms I9 upon This is because the ends I6 extend a sufficient distance beyond the cylinder 8 to be engaged by the gripper devices before the gripper devices move beyond said ends. Continued outward movement of the gripper devices causes the forks 23 torengage the arms 'I and thereby open the gripper devices to discharge therefrom the wrapper sections that had been removed from the confection. Also, such operation of the lever 45 operates the plunger 49 against the upper end of theconfection in the cylinder 8, and said plunger pushes the confection into the upper end of the receptacle or cone I2. It Vwill be understood that the wrapper consists of two sections of material, each section covering about one-half ofthe confection, and that the respective sections of wrapper are removed by the respective gripper vdevices in the manner described.
It is now apparent that this invention is operative to remove wrappers from confections and the like, and that it is entirely unnecessary for the hands of the operator to contact with the Vconfections since, when the confections are placed in the cylinder 8, only the wrappers come into contact with the hands of the operator.
The invention may be varied within the scope of equivalent limits without departure from the nature and principle thereof.
1. A machine for removing wrappers from articles comprising a support having diametrically opposite openings for the ends of the wrapper, gripper devices, mechanism for moving the gripper devices toward said support, means for causing the gripper devices to engage the ends of the wrapper, and means for opening the gripper devices to discharge the wrappers therefrom.
2. A machine of the character described comprising a vertical cylinder having diametrically opposite slots extending downwardly from the upper end of the cylinder and terminating short of the lower end of the cylinder and adapted to receive the ends of a wrapper on an article placed in the cylinder, gripper devices, means for supporting said gripper devices for movement toward and from said cylinder, mechanism for moving said gripper devices toward and from said cylinder, and means for causing said gripper devices to engage the ends of the wrapper and to withdraw the wrapper from said support when said gripper devices are moved from said support.
3. A machine of the character described comprising a vertical cylinder having diametrically opposite slots extending -downwardly from the A upper end of the cylinder and terminating short of the lower end of the cylinder and adapted-to receive the ends of a wrapper on an article placed in the cylinder, gripper devices, means for supporting said gripper devices for movement toward and from said cylinder, mechanism for moving said gripper devices toward and from said cylinder, means for causing said gripper. devices to engage the ends of the wrapper and to withdraw the wrapper from said support when said gripper devices are moved from said support, and means for opening said gripper devices to discharge the wrappers therefrom.

A machine of the character described comprising a frame, an approximately vertical cylinder mounted in connection with said frame and having diametrically opposite vertical slots extending from the upper end ofthe cylinder downwardly and terminating short of the lower end of the cylinder for receiving the extended ends of a wrapper on an article placed in said cylinder, a pair of parallel rods supported by said frame, gripper devices supported by said rods formovement toward and from said cylinder, mechanism for moving said gripper devices toward and from said cylinder, and means for causing said gripper devices to engage the ends of thewrapper extending through said slots during initial movement of said gripper -devices from said cylinder.
5. A machine of the character described comprising a frame, an approximately vertical cylinder mounted in connection with said frame and having diametrically opposite vertical slots extending from the upper end of the cylinder downwardly and terminating short of the lower end of the cylinder for receiving the extended ends of a wrapper on an article placed in said cylinder, a pair of parallel rods supported by said frame, gripper devices supported by said rods for movement toward and from said cylinder, mechanism for moving said gripper devices toward and from said cylinder, means for causing said gripper devices to engage the ends of the wrapper extending through said slots during initial movement of said gripper devices from said cylinder, and means for releasing said gripper devices from said wrappers during iinal movements of said gripper devices from said cylinder.
6. A machine of the character described comprising a support for an article having a wrapper, means whereby the ends of the wrapper will engage said support and support the article in connection with said support, and mechanism for engaging the ends of the Wrapper and withdrawing the same from within said support and from around the article.
7. A machine of the character described comprising a support for an article having a Wrapper, means whereby the ends of the wrapper will engage said support and support the article in connection with said support, mechanism for engaging the ends of the Wrapper and withdrawing the same from within said support and from around the article, and means for disengaging said mechanism from said Wrappers.
8. A machine of the character described comprising a cylindrical support for a Wrapped article, said support having diametrically opposite slots through which the ends of the wrapper on the article extend, mechanism for engaging the ends of the wrapper and withdrawing the same from within the support and from around the article, and means for discharging the article from said support.
9. A machine of the character described comprising a frame, two parallel rods supported by said frame, a cylindrical support for a wrapped article attached to said frame and having oppositely disposed slots for holding the ends of the Wrapper extended, gripper mechanisms mounted on said rods for movement toward and from said support, mechanism for moving said gripper mechanisms toward and from said support, and means for causing said gripper mechanisms to engage the ends of the wrapper during movement of said gripper mechanisms from said support.
10. A machine of the character described comprising a frame, two parallel rods supported by said frame, a cylindrical support for a Wrapped article attached to said frame and having oppositely disposed slots for holding the ends of the wrapper extended, gripper mechanisms mounted on said rods for movement toward and from said support, mechanism for moving said gripper mechanisms toward and from said-support, meansl for causing said gripper mechanisms to engage the ends of the wrapper during movement of said gripper mechanisms from said support, and means for releasing said gripper mechanisms from the Wrappers.
