Application December 7, 1934, Serial No. 756,435 12 Claims. (Cl. 95-100) My invention relates to an improvement in a lm holder and hanger and its novelty consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully hereinafter pointed out.
There have been numerous attempts to solve the problem of furnishing a film holder and hanger insuring easy and quick insertion and removal of the film therein and also provide for perfect immerion and uniform drying of the lm, but my device for the first time solves all of these problems in a positive manner in a single piece of moldable nonmetallic material which avoids chemical reactions.
Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my device and Figure 2 is a cross section of the same on the line 2 2 of Figure l.
My nlm holder and hanger is preferably a molded single piece structure of a material not affected by chemicals and having four main frame members 3 forming internal wide bottomed V shaped channels 4 throughout their length and being rigidly secured together at their ends to form the corners of the frame in the usual manner. Extension frame members 5 are integral with the two upper corners and a vsupporting bar 6 having suspension out out elegments l at each end is rigidly secured or molded in the usual manner to the upper ends of said extension frame members 5.
A out out or drainage and ventilation opening 8 is formed in the two upper ends of the side frame members 3 and similar ventilation and drainage openings 9 are made in the base of the upper channel 4 at suitable intervals throughout its length.
At the base of each of the side frame members 3 the outer side of the base of said frame members is out away at I0 in a sloping manner to insure the running olf of all moisture therefrom steadily so as to prevent accumulation and dripping, the outer sides of the ends of the lower frame member 3 being also cut away in a sloping manner at Il for the same reason, and the adjacent out away portions In and Il forming complete open corners l2 for the ready insertion and removal of the film to be treated at the bottom of said frame and for complete drainage and drying of the film mounted in said frame.
Such bottom loading insures against accidental dislodgment at the upper edge of the film where the liquid pressure comes as the frame is moved back and forth in the liquid on its hanger elements 1 because the bottom swings back being free.
The outer side of the lower frame member 3 is cut lower at I3 than the inner side I4 so as to enable the user to snap the lower edges of the lm into position in or out of the holder by a gentle pressure inwardly or outwardly, as the g case may be, at the middle portion of the lower edge of the lm so as to avoid any injury to the emulsion surface of said film. The film can then be withdrawn through the open corners I2 or slid into said frame through said open corners and locked in position by pressing the middle of said illm over the edge i3 until the entire lower edge of said film engages in the channel i of the lower frame member 3.
The distance between the base of channel 4 of the upper channel frame member 3 and the upper edge i3 of the outer part of lower channel frame member 3 is just slightly less than the height of the film adaptedto be mounted and held therein.
There are projections l from the inner side of the inner channel member i4 of the lower frame member 3 adapted to hold the lower edge of the nlm away from contact with the said channel 4 and holes il in the said inner side I4 to effect drainage and circulation. A
The emulsion coated side of the film will be held upwardly as the nlm is slipped into the frame in opening corners l2 so that the uncoated side will contact in the channels 4 and come into contact with the projections I6.
It will be particularly noted that the channels 4 are of a V type but wide enough at the bottom to allow for the curl of the edges of the film placed therein and still prevent contact with the side wall of said channel 4.
it will thus be seen that my device is open at all four corners of the frame so as to effect perfect drainage and thereby facilitate the drying of the film and prevent spotting which would occur if drops were formed which leave drying marks on the emulsion side of the film.
This perfect draining and drying is further insured by the sloping out aways at I0 and Il which insure the steady and immediate fiowing away of any moisture and the prevention of any formation of drops which cause spotting on the iilm.
It has been found that a continuous unbroken channel 4 such as is shown in the drawing, is 50 the preferred form on the side channels and provides a more thorough drainage due to the fact that any holes in these side channels 4 will hold water through capillary attraction and also such holes furnish a means of egress to the 55 air which is blown on the lms when suspended to dry in said frames, thereby causing drying streaks because of uneven drying.
The holes lll in the inner side of the lower channel 4 will be on the back or nonemulsion side of the lm and therefore cannot have any harmful drying effect on the film, and the use of holes on the front of the film or channels 4 in said Ibottom channel i will cause bubbles to form as the film is lowered into the developing solution which causes pinholes in the image or uneven developing.
The use of large ventilation or drainage openings 9 in the base of the upper channel so as to open up more than fifty percent of said upper channel i insures the escape of any air or possible bubbles as the holder containing the lm is lowered into the developing solution and c thereby prevents the contacting of any such bubbles on the film from this upper channel l and thereby eliminates the possibility of pinholes in the image or uneven developing as above referred to.
Many changes and variations may be made in my structure without departing from the spirit and intent of the same so long as they conform to the physical and chemical requirements as definitely set forth herein.
It will be apparent that my device is adapted not only to be made more cheaply than any holder in the prior art because of its being a single piece device adapted to be molded from a suitable material which can have no chemical effect inthe developing of solutions in which it is tobe used, but it is also a lighter andV more easily handled device adapting itself to use in large numbers as is the common practice in this art.
I claim: Y

In a film hanger a frame comprising four internally channeled members rigidly joined at their corners, the space between the bases of each pair of opposite channels being slightly greater than the lm to be held therein, means for sliding a film thereinto at the bottom, and the outer edge of the lower channel member being slightly lower than the inner edge of the same, and means for suspending said frame.
2. In a film hanger a frame comprising four internally channeled members rigidly joined at their corners, the space between the bases of each pair of opposite channels being slightly greater than the nlm to be held therein, means for sliding a lm thereinto at the bottom, and the outer edge of the lower channel member being slightly lower than the inner edge of the same, and means for suspending said frame comprising a suspension bar with notched ends and being rigidly secured by offset members to the upper ends of said side frame members.
