1 Claim.
This invention relates to an automatic lighter and gas saver which is mainly designed for use with a welding torch, the general object of the invention being to provide a valve housing having inlets for receiving oxygen and acetylene or the like and outlets adapted to be connected with the torch, with manually operated valve means for controlling the supply of gases through the device and also to provide a pilot valve for supplying gas to the torch for the pilot flame thereof.
This invention consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:-
Figure 1 is an elevation showing the invention in use with a torch.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the valve housing.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a section on theline 4--4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Figure 2.
Figure 6 is a view of the operating rod and the cross piece attached thereto.
In these drawings the numeral l indicates a block of any suitable material enclosed in a casing 2 and said block in its front end is provided with a chamber 3, and from the inner end of this chamber extends a pair of cylinders 4 and 5. The front portion of the walls of the cylinders are threaded to receive the nuts 6 with the packing means 1 between each pair of nuts so that the front ends of the cylinders are closed. A long passage 8 is formed in the block adjacent the cylinder 4 and an intermediate part of this passage is connected to the cylinder 4 by a port 9 while a substantially L-shaped passage H] extends from the cylinder 5 through the front end of the block. The front ends of the passages 8 and H] receive the outlet tubes H which have the heads l2 on the outer ends for receiving the fittings leading to the torch shown generally at A, these fittings containing the valves 14 as shown in Figure 1. rear end of the block where each passage receives the hose connection l1, one of which is to be connected to a supply of oxygen and the other to a supply of acetylene. The upper cylinder 4 and the passages connected therewith are connected with the supply of acetylene, while the lower cylinder 5 and the passages connected therewith are connected with the supply of oxygen. A pilot passage l8 extends from the acetylene passage I6 into the passage 8 and is controlled by a screw valve l9 so that by slightly opening this valve l9 acetylene gas can be supplied to the pilot of the torch.
A pair of piston valves 20 are located in the cylinders 4 and 5 for controlling communication between the passages l6 and the passages B and l0 and these pistons are connected to the rods 2i which pass through the nuts 6 and the packing 1 and their outer ends are connected by a cross piece 22 to the center of which a rod 23 is connected by the nuts 24, the rod passing through a bore in the center of the block into a cylinder 25 at the rear end of the block. A spring 26 encircles the rod and is located in the cylinder 25 and a washer 21 is held in position on the rod by the nut 28, the washer formin a bearing for the spring and the spring acting to hold the parts with the valve pistons 20 in closed position as shown in Figure 2. A coupling 29 is connected with the rear end of the rod and connects with a slide button 30 which passes through a slot 3] in the casing 2 as shown in Figure 3, so that by adjusting this button the valves can be moved to open or closed position and both valves will be adjusted at the same time.
Thus it will be seen that when the torch is not in use a small pilot light will be burning at the tip of the torch and then when it is desired to use the torch the button 30 is moved to a position to open the valves 20 so that the gases will flow to the torch to produce a welding flame.

In a device of the class described, a body hav ing a recess in each end thereof, a pair of spaced longitudinally extending cylinders in the body opening out into one recess, means for closing the outer end of each cylinder, a piston in each cylinder, rods connected with the pistons and V passing through the closing means, a cross piece connecting the outer ends of the rods together, a stem having one end connected with the central part of the cross piece, said stem being slidably supported in the central part of the body, a cylinder opening out into the other recess and into which the stem extends, a head on the stem slidably arranged in the last mentioned cylinder, a spring'in said last mentioned cylinder bearing ing to a point adjacent an inlet passage, and the body having a lateral port therein connecting said extension with said inlet passage, and a screw valve passing through a side part of the body and controlling the port.
