Description

Jan. 7, 1935. R 5 ROSA 2,026,934
ORNAMENT Filed Aug. 15, 1935 INVENTOR.
RALPH DE Rmfi v ATTORNEY.
Patented Jan. 7, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT GFFEQE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to ornaments, .and in particular to a type adapted for use on dresses, hats or the hair and one which can be applied without manipulation of catches pins or the like.
A particular object of my invention is to provide an ornament having a body portion and wing members, the latter of which are operated to bring about attachment of the ornament to the garment, hat or hair. In ornaments of the character referred to, it has heretofore been the practice to provide a pin for attaching means, and one which necessitated careful insertion into the goods of the dress or hat and also means for locking the pin closed.
A further object of my invention is to provide on an ornament of the character referred to, a fastening means which will eliminate the need for any locking member and will also permit attachment of the ornament easily and quickly and without any preliminary adjustment of the parts of the ornament.
Changes and variations may be made in the construction shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing its chief advantages; hence such invention is not to be confined to the structure shown in the drawing, in which;
Figure 1 is a plan view of the butterfly form of ornamental device which may be decorated with any ornamentation desired such as jewels, spangles or the like.
Figure 2 is an enlarged plan view of the hinge section of the ornament shown in Figures 1, 4, 5, and 6 and illustrates how the wing sections of the ornament are secured to the body portion thereof,
Figure 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Figure 2 showing the operation of the wing sections and means employed for attaching the ornament to a garment or other material,
Figures 4 and 5 show modified forms of the body and wing arrangement of an ornament that is not in the shape of an insect or butterfly.
Referring to the drawing in detail, 5 indicates generally an ornamental member which consists essentially of a body 6 and wing portions 1. This ornament as illustrated in Figure l is depicted in i the shape of a butterfly, but it is to be understood that the form of the Ornament is not an essential part of my invention as any ornamental form may be used that includes the body 5 and wings or side hinged members i.
The body 6 and wings i may be ornamented with precious or semi-precious stones or designs 8 as desired; and at a suitable point intermediate its ends and at opposite sides thereof the body 5, is arranged to have secured thereto, as by soldering or any other means, the hinge plates 9. Inasmuch as both sides of the device .are the same a description of one will suffice and it will be noted that the outer edge of the hinge plate 9 is provided with the spaced eyes l0, formed integrally with the plate 9. In order to mount the wing portions of the ornament for swinging movement with relation to the body thereof, I 5
provide the wing hinge plate Ii, to which is secured, as by soldering or otherwise, the wing I. The wing hinge plate H is provided at its outer edge with the upstanding ears I2 through which passes a hinge pin l3 that also passes through the 10 eyes ll of the body hinge plate 9 and has its ends headed as at MA to prevent removal.
Between the eyes Hi the pin l3 carries a spring M, one end l5 of which bears against the body hinge plate 9 and the other end ii: of which bears 15 against the wing hinge plate I I. The spring operates to keep the wings in normal position as shown in full lines in Figure 3 so that the pins or prongs I! that are suitably secured to the depending ends iii of the wing hinge plates 1 l are 20 closed and will keep the ornament in place on the material. In order to engage or disengage the pins ll from the material to which the ornament is to be applied the wings are moved toward each other against the action of the springs as shown 2 in outline in Figure 3 to initially open the pins H.
In Figures 5 and 4, modified forms of my de vice are shown for the purpose of illustrating the possibility of applying the'construction to an ornament of any shape .and in Figure 5 the body 24 3 may have the same shape as the wing portions 25. In Figure 4, the body 26 may be rectangular or square while the wings 21 are circular, it being evident that such combinations may be varied as desired. My invention resides particularly in 35 the use of the wing portions with the spring held hinges to retain the ornament in place without danger of its being lost and without the necessity of employing expensive and complicated locking devices which add materially to the cost of the ornament.
My invention is not to be restricted to the precise details of construction shown since various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing the advantages derived from its use.
What I claim is;
In an ornament of the character described, a body portion, body hinge plates secured thereto, wing members, wing hinge plates secured to the wing members one end of said wing hinge plates being attached for swinging movement to the body hinge plates the other end of said wing hinge plates being downturrred, piercing pins carried by said downturned ends, springs in the hinges tor yieldably holding the piercing pins closed and said wings being movable against the action of said springs to open said pins.
